First, I sketch it out in pencil in my sketchbook. Pretty simple. A real quick foundation...
Then, I lay an ink wash over the whole thing...
After that dries up, I go in with prisma color markers and knock out some basic colors for the character...
Then come's the inking. I use a varity of width's when inking. Also, on this piece I decided to change the blue of her vest to a brighter blue. Other small alterations as I see fit...
Now, is where the piece comes together. Here I go in and finish it off with pencil, color pencil, and guache. Done! There you have it. Hope that breaks some of the mystery for all who have asked me to do this tutorial.

ooh! ooh! I get to be the first one to complain, heh heh:
after seeing coro do his stuff in Austin a couple times I could have guessed at the first three steps (but I still like seeing them). I more interested in the quick "finish with pencil, color pencil and gouche" 1-2-3 punch; can you break that into 2 or 3 steps? That seems to be the stages where you build the most color and value.
nah, its still cool stuff, I'm just curious about the end.
hahahah bitch! tryin to cheap the last steps and shit! naw, good job baby. i am particularly fond of your use of the marker to scribble the dirt and grime shapes in. gives it that randomness thats so hard to attain. i think thats the best gem of knoweledge presented. look closely kiddies, thats a piece of the puzzle there.
bwkeough: you arent missing much in the additional steps you are requesting. it usually goes something like this: nate than hands coro his sketchbook, coro climbs up on nates lap and finishes it for him, while nate uses his nimble fingers to...well, i wont get into that...its getting hot in here-c36
Thanks for sharing these steps. Feels related to el coro's method. THe finished stage feels a bit too dark and the nice texture you laid into shoulder pads with markers seem lost... maybe its just this monitor...

i like the grimy stage the most, the last stage lost too much of the bright color i liked.. you'll use digital touchups from time to time as well right?

Pichuerca: Yeah, Coro and I use a lot of the same stuff but in different doses. Glad you like it.
bwkeough: Yeah, I'm a dick that way. The only fun thing about drawing is the sketch when you first begin, and all the shit at the end that makes it look cool. You aren't missing much in the last step. Just a lot of stupid detail. Glad you like it though.
El Corororororrrro: Damn straight. That last step is a big jump from the step before, but no reason to scan it in pieces. Your right about the shoulder pads. That's the burried gem. Scribble like a 2 year-old.
By the way, you gotta' wipe better. Last time you climbed on my lap you left "dirt" rings. Heh heh.
Hito: Yeah, there are similarities between Coro's and my technique, but in the end are stuff looks quite different. The original is pretty dark, btw. I think it got even darker after I scanned it.

Main Loop: Glad you like it. Yeah, this one actually got pretty dark in the end. I'm sure I'll do a better one in the future. Yeah, I do some PS touch-ups. Didn't do any on this one.
I like how you kind of just keep adding layers, working over top of everything including the pencil, adding color before you ink and all that. It's cool to see the difference between the way you and coro work, using similar materials in slightly different ways and different orders. I think a quick comparison proves that figuring out your own technique and experimenting to find out what works best for you is extremely important.
And I think you should demand a section in the Artist Showcase so your stuff doesn't get buried and difficult to find...

As usual, really beautiful work. It's very interesting to see two people's approaches to the same mixed media style. You seem to put much more emphasis on inking things than coro has in his past work, along with much bolder and starker colors. Like I said, interesting shite.
