    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Topic:
    COW #332: Intellect Devourer

    Brief:
Dungeons and Dragons has it's fair share of weird and wonderful beasties. Some are what you'd normally expect from a fantasy game, such as dragons, griffins, mermaid, etc; while others were just a hard hit to left field. One of those oddball creatures, which we will be focusing on for this topic, is the Intellect Devourer. The Intellect Devourer is basically a brain with legs, sometimes depicted with a canine-like body. As for what it does, it is a parasitic creature. Capable of changing it's size, it will take over it's host and consume the brain (hence it's name), then it will assume the form of it's victim, animating the body to do it's deeds. Your task is to design this brainy creature.

    Round Requirements:
-must have a resemblance to a brain
    -typically a quadruped
    -it eats BRAAIIINS!

    Deadline:
Wednesday September 10, 11:59:59 PM EST (GMT -4)

This thread is the WIPs Thread, meant for uploading any wips, sketches, and ideas for your creature's concepts, as well as any crits, comments, reference images, and discussions relating to the topic! Please submit your final entries to the Finals Thread which can be found here, otherwise your entry will not be included into the poll:
    http://www.conceptart.org/forums/sho...13#post3854813

If you have any ideas for a future topic for Creature of the Week you are free to add your own ideas and suggestions to the Topic Suggestion Thread!

If your looking for a little inspiration for your designs, we have a good Site Reference Thread available!

    Here are few thumbnails.
I know you said 'typically a quadruped', but just to get creative...
can it have other kinds of locomotion without legs, like octopus, snail, etc?

coool brain: I guess you can try to come up with some other form of locomotion for variety's sake. But try to keep it as a quadruped so the snail is a no go, the tentacles are a bit borderline but if you make it terrestrial I guess I can let that slide

@Rob Powell: Thanks. I think I will go with my 5th thumbnail. Clean quadruped. No ambiguity

    WIP.
This Brain Bug crawls into the cranium and starts eating from the back part of the brain.
This process takes and hour and goes through 3 stages:
    1. Connecting with the host.
    2. Devouring through mouth on its ventral side.
    3. Stabilizing and gaining full control on the host.

    Got a lot done today.

I figured since I'm going to have nightmares tonight after staring at/creating this guy, I'd share the wealth/WIP.

Cool Brain - looking good! I think you should flesh out your creature more though. These are great as sketches to show to the side of your concept, but as the central piece is now, it's too weak to be a final product. I understand it's still a wip though, so looking forward to more!

My initial idea. I like the idea of the spider legs, but can cut off a few legs if we are stuck on quadruped (You did make room for ambiguity in your wording). Concept still needs work so far.
Like coolbrain's brain worm the creature burrows in, but then bursts out alien stylee.

elinoree: Get some reference for the mouth. You should Google up some images of a lamprey, although it's not going to help with those nightmares...
Defiledvisions: All the legs in your wips had musculature, but the one you chose hasn't, don't forget to add some interesting shapes or even break up those long shin-bones with another joint to make them seem less like a smooth pipe.

    Hey guys.

Really cool stuff going on in here, I had to join in, this is my first ever COW in the ten years I've been here, terrible I know lol.

I've done a few designs, I don't know if I'm doing it right, I didn't want to do literally just a brain with legs but I dunno if my stuff is close enough?

BenReichert: neat designs so far, but remember it is a quadruped and needs four legs...it can have additional limbs but must walk on four legs...

Atropolith: I like the shape of it but it feels suuuuuper headcrabby (Half life creature). Maybe do something to deviate from that?

It's a toss up between the mole brain and the mozzie brain, I'm leaning more towards the mozzie though. Dunno if I'll be able to finish a proper piece before the deadline but I'll try regardless.

Krane: Thank you. I will try to add some spikes or a tail or something but I don't think it will help with the design much. I probably won't change it that much as I feel that the design itself does differ enough. And if it does not, then I will still be learning.

Going to see what I can get done before the deadline!

    Nice stuff from everyone.

This should be a good warm up for the next CHOW too.

Is this too much of a 1:1 copy of an existing animal? Im new to COW and to creatures in fact so I am trying to get my skills up in this area.

Samhakem: I think they are looking a little bit too dog like, but I think the bottom right one may be different enough to be accepted maybe? Either way very cool designs, really dig them.

Scorge: Super fucking cool dude, suuuuuper cool, it feels like his brain doubles as a floatation device haha.
The Colorado Kid: Pretty creepy dude, is that armour he is wearing? Is inorganic armour allowed in COW? If not it be best to give him more organic looking armour.

I won't be able to finish mine, I ended up getting a commission I need to finish in 2 days, 18 simple monsters, so I'll have to bow out of this one. Good luck to the rest of you

    Brain-Bug

    Brain-Bug!
    (Very original name)

I tried to enter this before but something might've gone wrong. Completely new to this site and this is the first contest I'm entering.

The Brain-Bug is, well, a bug. He is called a brain bug because of the resemblance of a brain on his shell/wings plus, he eats brains. He enters a human's body by first stinging them with his stinger and also punctures the human's skin with this. When he is safely attached to his victim's neck he eats his way inside, through the brain to the front. When he reached the front of the human's brain he used his 4 antenna/tentacles into the nervous system and takes full control over the body. When in control he uses the body to build himself a nest to breed and lay eggs.
When the nest is build the Brain-Bug eats the rest of his victim's brain and leaves the same way he entered; through the neck.
