Hi! It does not suck at all for the first try. But what sucks a little is the post processing of the image - blurriness and other distracting add-on's that are not correct. Find the way to define the mouth details as teeth and gums.. Anatomical stuff that makes sense even if the subject is imaginary creature. Use of reference is preferable.
Zbrush is better than sculptris indeed. But Vray might not be the best for rendering sculpts for the presentation. There is way more effective renderers that makes it easier. Keyshot for example. Look up for this. Vray might be way more complex than you might need and also slower in some cases.
And as Pixelogic has announced, new zbrush 4R7 comes with Keyshot bundle package and it's become a native renderer for zbrush. Will see...
Post more pictures on different angles to get better critique. And not so much post blurry and distracting effects if not necesarry.
Keep it up!

Thank you alot for the crit!!
I am in the infancy stage of sculpting/ still trying not to "destroy" the clay
after I push it a while the clay breaks and splits and becomes useless pixelated crap
I did add some paint and blur to ease the pain on your eyes
the gums and teeth need work as i was not using a ref for that
I fear I wont work with zbrush until i take a in house job
My friend has Keyshot and I will clean the sculpt and keyshot it for review!!
I saw your sketchbook and the enviros are sweeet

In older times, before dynamesh, you had to go easy with dividing subdivisions too high too soon.
And had to retypology the mesh in the middle of the process if necessary to fix stretched polygons.
If you have not tried zbrush, i guess you can give it a chance. They give the 30 days trial period before buying it. It feels way better.

All I could think was, How do they not sink?
ok is a relative term
everything is in slo motion like when i was a child
it makes me happy that you like your meal/now i feel better about it.
