    Topic:
    COW #331: Alien Mud Monster

    Brief:
We are going to get dirty for this next topic. Let's consider what would happen if an alien race would invade Earth by using the ground we walk on as a weapon. Or the ground they walk on? Or perhaps they themselves are the ground, so they walk on themselves? Anyways, the creature we are designing for this round is alien and made of mud. Fairly straightforward, but a big note I want to make, really try to follow the 'no blobs' rule. Let's put it this way, for example the black goo that makes Venom is unacceptable, but Venom himself is acceptable (minus the character and humanoid qualities, of course). Be sure to keep your creature very muddy and disgusting however! Now let's get Dirty!!

    Round Requirements:
    -mostly made of mud
-has something to do with aliens; a mutant from space, space mud, infected with some alien virus, etc.
    -monstrous appearance
-remember no blobs, must have an underlying form

Here's a start. It's an alien monster that lies waiting in the ground for humans or other prey to walk by. It practically opens it's stomach and drags the prey down in the mud where they slowly digest in it's claws. Name: Alien_Mud_monster_1.png

Xephio, the rules state that most of the creature must be visible if that clarifies things. So what you have now probably wouldn't be acceptable unless you add the entire body.

Does it really have to be made out of mud? or could it just be covered with mud and live in mud?

If there is a lot of mud involved then it is fine.

    Hello everyone,

taking this challenge as an opportunity to get back into painting after a long long time.

I was thinking of a species that heavily relies on mud not only as a habitat but also as a material to build their chitin-like-but-not-actually-chitin exoskeleton from it.

This topic is really hard imo. Not only is it hard to come up with the concept itself. I think rendering mud will be really hard on itself.

Anyway, here my first little sketch.

    Update.
I must agree that these topic is not really easy. But from other hand it gives us a lot of freedom. There's tons of ways to show mud monster

Hey everyone! First post here on CA actually. Been lurking for awhile and drawing on/off for a few years. Decided to start participating and taking art way more seriously recently though. Here's my take on this one so far.

Just a really quick sketch and some values. Had some thumbnails in my sketchbook and decided this was pretty solid. Basically just big insects with these giant "mountain" backs that chill in these mud-swamps and then come out to "play". I figure the horn would help them move under the mud along with the main top ridge of their backs. Trying to work on storytelling/composition right now so attempted to fit that in there, but if it just needs to be a shot of a few of the creatures let me know and I'll trim it down.
Really like what I'm seeing! Tsabu's super organic form fits really well with the mud concept imo.

    Thanks Kritzlof

I also like your design. Maybe add some more variety to the bones and make the spine a bit thicker? I like how menacing your alien looks, but the spine looks too weak.

Sorry, that I can't give more feedback right now, as I am in a hurry.

(also, the mud really is giving me a hard time, still looking too "sandy")

@Trajec It looks great! Maybe it would help to darken it a bit and focus more on highlights to give it a wet "glossy" look, a bit like this: http://texturelib.com/Textures/soil/...01_preview.jpg

Really dig the composition. Looking forward to where you are taking it.

    @Kritzlof
Tried to do what you suggested. Adding some highlights really helped.

Somehow I feel like I already spent too much time on this. Not sure if I will be doing something more before submitting tomorrow.

Looking forward to the next challenge.

Lizardy mud monster thing. Didn't have a lot of time, just blocking in colors trying to get a shape and contrast.
