CHOW #360 :: The Gunsmith Merchant

CHOW #360 :: The Gunsmith Merchant

    Character of the Week #360
    The Gunsmith Merchant

    Deadline - Sunday, September 7th 10PM GMT

Long ago the world fell apart from a catastrophe which nearly annihilated humanity. The world is now recovering but the damage is very severe. In this broken world, there are no more laws other than common morality among the survivors. Some live in peace, some live to cause chaos and some just want to make money. There is a gun smith who carries almost any kind of gun you would need, even make shift ones. If you want to protect your self, then he is the guy you would visit.

This week you are to design the gun smith merchant. This is a post-apocalyptic world, so you will need to design him accordingly. However, it is not specified how the world ended, so that is up to you.

    The Guidelines:
    • Must be Human (if you do mutations, don't do anything that would make him/her unidentifiable as human.)
    • Can be male or female.
    • Must have injuries from the disaster, old or new.
    • The genre is Post-Apocalyptic.
    • Background's Permitted, but don't forget what the focus is!

    The Rules
    • Finals must be posted in the finals thread before the deadline
    • Final post must include the CHoW # and the artists username at the bottom of the image within, at least, a footer bar(TYPED, NOT WRITTEN)
    • At least 3/4 of the character must be visible (minimum from the knees up). No back views are allowed without a front please.
    • Only ONE character please, no multiple submissions.
    • Sketches or rushed artwork will not be accepted into the poll
    • No photograph paint overs, must be 100% original work.
    • At least two wips posted with your final in the finals thread.
    • NO ENVIRONMENT BACKGROUNDS! You may use simple shapes, gradients or silhouettes. (UNLESS STATED OTHERWISE WITHIN THE WEEKLY BRIEF.)
    • Please read through the thread for any posts made by the mod. They likely answered a question that was asked about the challenge!
    • Have fun!

Here's my initial idea for the merchant! still very rough, undecided with the helmet as well and if I have to add a vehicle or some sort for weapon storage as this is a merchant after all aaand am still not sure if I'll go with this. I'm thinking of having my merchant as a kid/child or as an elderly if I won't go with this. I might post more ideas before I get a pick.

did some quick sketches for this one! the thought was a handy man plundered a museum for protection and ended up with some samurai gear and stuck with it and kept modifying it.

first idea, need to put some more original weapons on him and make him more post-apocalyptic...

    cool stuff here.

Coool brain: interesting silhouette. Looking forward to the fleshed out version

fllamjr: cool sketch, maybe a bit generic with the gasmask. but it also sells the post apocalyptic idea well.

PxelSlayer. Awesome idea, nobody suspects the 80 year old lady to be selling the goods. nice approach. looking forward to the final

CrookedHorn: can´t really tell much yet, looks like some mech legs? interesting shapes for sure.

Emilche: nice approach trying to figure out a design by setting up the story first. apocalyptic samourai handy- man does sound nice.

Finally been able to catch one of these in time. Wanted to start off with some thumbnails. I actually rather enjoy 6's femininity. Like a heavy-duty, cargo skirt.

You got some cool stuff coming down the pipe, fllamjr.

PxlSlayer, the colors are pretty good, but nothing about it screams gunsmith or merchant. The can being a gun would make a good start, I think!

I'd like to comment on everyone's but it's getting close to 3 A.M.... my sight ain't seein' so good no more X(

@Robindahood - thanks! It`s still pretty early, I`m toying with a couple ideas. I actually want to make her seem a bit shady, but approachable. Maybe like an NPC who almost is a grandma figure to PC and something of a legend in her community. One thing I do know is that I don`t really want her to be holding a gun or anything. I mean, she`s a gunsmith, yea, but she`s also a merchant, and I wouldn`t be buying any goods if someone was waving their boom boom stick around me. But that`s just me. :3

CharlesLogan: Thanks! glad it gave you the shivers! haha

RobIndahood: Thanks! Oh and I agree with you on your 6!

Here's another rough sketch of my 4th design idea, if I don't think of any new designs by the weekend this may be my last idea and start rendering a chosen design.

@PxelSlayer: Ah, I gotcha. Yeah, just be sure to show us that she has a heavy affiliation with guns is all I'm sayin'. I trust you'll make your final design work

@fllamjr: Ah dude, I wish I was good at drawing mechs. I'm pretty terrible at them without some kind of inspiration right in front of me. Otherwise I'd totally make a walking mech shop out of that xD

Hello. I'm new to these forums, but I'm eager to start doing this COTW competition. I've got a question, regarding the quota for this one.

Is it possible, as part of one submission, to have two characters that are linked together in a way? As if they were one conjoined character?

Good show again Guys.Hey StinkyPanda, check your proportions and anatomy. Torso is too long and the arm is bent at an awkward angle and also the upper half dosen't look like it fits with the legs.
I went with a banged up grizzled war vet who is dressed like those bartenders from the westerns. I think.

Baranha - Solid man, really like how believable the prosthetics are.
fllamjr - both your second and third design are killer man, i hope you find the time to render both, I'd love to see 'em!
RobIndahood - your first and third silhouettes really stand out to me, both strike me as having some good potential
tienchi - slightly confused by the other person standing in front of your mech suit character, its kind of making the guy in the suit look giant
stinkypanda - I think you did a good job of illustrating the merchant aspect but your anatomy seems a little off
pxelslayer - love the idea, and the render is already tight, but as was said already it could use a push connecting her with guns

So heres my line work, went with the fat spider. My thoughts for the character were ruthlessly smart and tech savy. When the apocalypse struck (sometime in the future) he capitalized on the chaos and through brutality became one of the big players in the new world order.

@Brad: Definitely on the wilder side, he's grosser for sure. Kind of reminds me of Krew from Jak 2. In fact I'd go as far as to say: look at him for some inspiration if you haven't already. The spider legs look pretty believable, which is nice. His torso is kind of boring though. What are the wires stick out of him doing connecting to his back? Why is there a box sticking out him connected to his gun arm? Some things can be aethetic, but make sure most everything on him has purpose.

@Baranha: I like the way he's shaping up! What I would do next is copy him a few times and do some variations to see if you can't forge anything interesting out of them.

    Update time for me:

So, as before I've gotten pretty attached to 3. And I've figured out a good backstory for her as well and for why she's injured. If you see the crossed-out emblem on her arm, she used to be part of a large gang. She tried to split off, and it cost her (scars, prosthetic hand). Now she travels and peddles her guns, and her services to them. Just hope you aren't part of her old gang.

Here we go! I wanted to do a bit of a different Apocalypse, of a more spiritual/religious variety. The idea is that entities came down(/up) to Earth, ripped people's hearts out and weighed them, kinda like Ma'at does at the Book of the Dead... No Ammit to eat whoever had a heavy heart though, just eternal damnation on the ravaged Earth.

Thomas JordanWanless: I've had several ideas for chow regarding this, like 2 characters in one vehicle or something like that, not sure if it's permitted, hopefully Havok will be able to answer your question in time so that you can start working on your design .

Brad_Houghton: Thanks! I plan to render all of the designs if I have the time. Your current design is awesome as well! I'd hate to work for that guy that's for sure haha

No, only one character. There have been cases where an animal companion was made, which is fine.
