Thread: Don't give up!

Don't give up!
My name is Trong. I'm a beginning artist from Toronto, Canada. I'd like to become a concept artist and illustrator some day, maybe working in games or movies. That's the dream.
I don't do a lot of sketching for its own sake per se. Most times there's an idea I want to paint, and I just start painting and try things out as it goes, so there'll be lots of WIPs in this thread. C&C welcome!

Rock Dragons. They're screaming "We're having a baby! Stay the hell away!!"

Actually started with an idea for a dinosaur-like animal with an alternative set of legs: two to the sides and one in front and behind, but then became these guys. They're kinda related to the lindworm: wingless bipedal dragon with a venomous bite (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lindworm).

Thanks! Not sure if you meant blending colors to make a new one or blending the space between two tones to make a smooth gradient, but I'll do both
Speaking of blending, here's today's painting: Rock Baby. Probably my most rendered work so far. Story continued from the rock dragons piece:

Oh, forgot some background info: as the baby hatches, its body absorbs the egg around it, giving the rock a venous marble-sculpted look. All the other rocks in the same pile are its siblings, but not ones in the other piles.
I spent hours rendering that egg hatching! Hopefully the unfinished sculpture look comes across.

I absolutely love your ideas, they made my morning. You should do some value studies and paint a few spheres and other 3-d shapes to help out with shadows, also since you're working digitally I highly recommend going to ctrlpaint.com he has some great video tutorials to help smooth out your lines as well as videos to help out with fundamentals and traditional studies.

good stuff i see here , you can make great paintings with great ideas .. i know that you said you don't sketch often but i suggest to sketch a lot and especially from imagination .. wish you best of luck .

Thanks! Checking out Ctrl+Paint right away. Are there any more sites like this? Youtube channels are also good. Two I know off the top of my head are Feng Zhu and Marc Brunet's videos.
Yeah I think you're right, I'll try sketching more often. Here's one closing in on the mountain from the dinosaur knight painting a few days ago. Still learning how to design buildings, so they're all rectangles

I really dig your painterly style, and fun ideas.
Lupo mentioned blending. I found this great blending tutorial with practice sheets that are helping me a lot, and I thought I'd pass them along. They are pretty simple, but worthwhile practice. I'm a painter and designer, but digital painting is new to me, so found them to be useful, and maybe you will too.
I needed the "Don't give up!" Thanks!

Update on the samurai cat painting. Not sure how I feel about the trees, might redo so they're on top of a hill. More imposing that way I think.

My first gun design! This one's called Cannon Towns. Each machine requires a small town of ten thousand to maintain and operate.
