My attempt at a self portrait, probably shouldn't avoid doing these as much as I do... This will have to be the first of many..
I would say this is a medium key painting. The light source was relatively direct but keyed down for a more neutral look. I have had a bad habit of adding too much contrast into past works (and even my first attempt of this)so I killed off the very high & low values.
The thing that clicked with me during this assignment was look for the key shapes of the mass light and mass shadows in the face, then to build up the value range within those key shapes. I found the subtlest of value changes indicate a change of form.
After re-watching the video, I tried to keep the shadows relatively simple and to build up detail in the light.
Nice work with your process. Your outer edges are a bit too sharp. The trick there is to hold your eyes on the area of interest/focal area...the eyes in this case...and then look at edges in peripheral vision. This enables you to represent the edges in a way that will allow the eye to better rest on the focus instead of being pulled around to other areas which could be softened down.
Keep up the great work.
