CHOW #356 :: The Panda Guide

CHOW #356 :: The Panda Guide

    Character of the Week #356
    The Panda Guide

    Deadline - Sunday, July 13th 10PM GMT

China is the home of the lovable panda's that we all know of. Unfortunately, their species is in danger of extinction. Luckily, the gods have blessed forests with a panda guide who leads them into safe areas, within their habitat. Rumors are that the panda guide is a panda spirit. Others say that it is a human dressed in bamboo to attract the pandas to get them to follow him. The one commonly said rumor, is that the guide wields a decorative staff which depicts the head of a panda. But there is no photographic proof that the panda guide exists!

This week you must design the Panda Guide.

    The Guidelines:
    • Can be male or female
    • Must be humanoid.
    • This is not limited to the black and white pandas, you may reference the red ones too.
    • Must include the staff which the guide uses and must include what is described, but you are not limited to that. Be
      creative with it.
    • NO ENVIRONMENTAL BACKGROUNDS THIS WEEK. Follow the normal rules with this.
    • Genre is realistic/fantasy

    The Rules
    • Finals must be posted in the finals thread before the deadline
    • Final post must include the CHoW # and the artists username at the bottom of the image within, at least, a footer bar(TYPED, NOT WRITTEN)
    • At least 3/4 of the character must be visible. No back views are allowed without a front please.
    • Only ONE character please.
    • Sketches or rushed artwork will not be accepted into the poll
    • No photograph paint overs, must be 100% original work
    • At least two wips posted with your final in the finals thread
    • NO ENVIRONMENT BACKGROUNDS! You may use simple shapes, gradients or silhouettes
    • Please read through the thread for any posts made by the mod. They likely answered a question that was asked about the challenge!
    • Have fun!

I wasn't able to upload anything into my sketchbook this morning either, had to use a ImageShack link. :/

Going to join in the fun this week, interesting Character Brief.

Master Troglodyte your silhouettes are looking good, I like that last one the best. Interesting shapes with those bamboo shoots.

Been interested in getting into those challenges since i'm interested in character design, so i might as well give it a go.
Decided to go with some chinese opera influences.

Does this work as a panda staff? or is it too abstract?

Think it looks really cool and I like the idea more than a blatant panda head. If you're worried it won't read, you could maybe add a bit more branch things or give the head a more definite chin, but I like it as is. Really like the mood/feel of your character so far.

    Preliminary sketches

I have a clear image and mood this time, which is why it's much easier for me to sketch and get started. My feelings are quiet, slow, gentle, balance, night-time, greens and silvers, soft glows. Here are my very first sketches. I want a little child, probably a girl, who can walk on air and mostly balances on her tall staff. You rarely see her move, though - more like a dream when you look away and look back, she's somewhere else. She also uses the staff as a mask and sings to the pandas, her glowing eyes looking through it, her buns popping out from behind it like panda ears. Her staff is tall so that it can be seen from pandas low on the ground as they follow her to safety.

Drive your drawing has real character and that shows through, personality, that's the word I'm looking for . I'm digging that old drunken Panda vibe.

Smapel I can tell it's a panda head and I like the idea of making it a little less straight forward, but I think it would stand out a tad more if the eye and ear was more solid. Maybe a leaf? Or just thicken up the branches? That bamboo beard rocks!

JMJuretus your staff is cool, I like that geometric look. Stone? Metal?

    JustIce, red pandas ftw!!!

Veri I enjoy the fact that you already have a neat storyline behind your character and I really like the idea of her hiding behind the mask/staff. Making her appear like a panda with her buns sticking out. It gives off that tricky, crafty, joking nature that spirits are often known for.

Here are today's character sketches. Still kinda sticking to my original idea, but also pushing the character into different directions.

    thefro3po: Love the idea exploration.

I like the very different takes people have on this concept, definitely has a lot of room for interpretation.

Here is my current wip, I might explore some other ideas as I go on. Critiques and advice are welcome

Hello everyone. I'm thinking of taking metal as a Chinese element into nature spirit territory. So... magic bells. Sure! We'll see where it goes.

Wasn't happy with the pose, so I went with something a little more dynamic.

I could use some feedback on the foreshortening of the arm reaching toward the viewer. The anatomy looks a little odd to me, but I'm not sure how to fix it.

Hey, I know I'm late to the party, but this is the first time off I've had in a while, it's just a quick sketch for now, I'll see how far I can take it in the time that I have.

Cassovia your panda guide is coming along nicely. I'm feeling the whole traveling guide vibe I'm getting from all his accessories.

Thanks Tosmo, I feel like I'm running out of ideas now... guess I should narrow it down now.
I dig your character, especially the bear tied to the staff. I like that costume made up of bamboo pieces, but I'd like to see a little more of his personality come through in the pose, hand gestures, and/or facial expressions. I know it's still early, but just something to keep in mind for later. Keep up the good work.

Nixx your character is coming along nicely!
I always find it interesting to see other artist's process. Do you have a rough sketch underneath your solid colors or are you working loosely and refining as you go along? Your headdress is looking solid.

Yuushin, awesome work so far!!! I hope you'll be able to make some time to finish and submit it. I love what you've done with the bamboo leaves and shoots, incorporating them into the clothing very naturally and seemingly effortlessly. Very good! Nice unification of the character and staff with that same blue hue.

JustIce, I'm glad you're pushing your art further, by improving you pose. This new one is more interesting than the standing straight one. His posture is more inviting, like he's calling pandas to follow him into panda paradise.
Foreshortening is tough, but it pays off when you nail it. Generally objects closer to the viewer are larger than those further back, so you could try enlarging the forearm/hand (right now it's roughly the same size as the other arm/hand).

Personally Ice, I usually use a reference image for my anatomy poses, everything is based off what is going on under the characters clothes, so it's important to get it right. If you're using photoshop you can use guides to make sure you're getting the proper proportions.

I won't tell you it's the only way to do it, but I find it helps me tremendously. Hope that helps.

Alright, I'm starting to run low on ideas. I might push it in a couple different direction, but if nothing pops I'll stat combining my favorite elements and see what sticks out to me. I'd love to hear which ones you guys think are working and what stands out.

I'm still not sure what I'm going to do about the staff though, I haven't really had much luck with creating something that feels like it fits...

I'm glad this CHOW was two weeks, I tend to start off slowly and I get a feeling next week is going to be a bit busy.
