COW #324: Multi-headed Melanistc Dragon
Chances are, if you participate in this activity then you already know and love dragons. They are pretty damn popular! So, here's another topic centered around these awesome beasties. The dragon that we are going to be designing is going to be melanistic, meaning its skin has a rare overdevelopment of the dark pigment, melanin. In other words it is the exact opposite of albinism, so animals would appear black (or at least unusually dark) in colour. A well known example is the Black Panther which is a melanistic Leopard. In addition to that your dragon has multiple heads, you can give us a two headed dragon, or you can give us a dragon with a few dozen heads, they can have varying appearances and functions or they can be completely identical, doesn't matter! What matters is that it is a dragon that has more than one head on it's shoulders...or where ever you decide to put them.
-must have two or more heads
-must be a dragon

Wow awesome topic Rob!
Nice topic! Question: the dragon doesn't require feathers or fur, am i right?
feathers, fur, scales, whatever you want mate! as long as it is a black dragon with more than one head! Everything else is up to your imagination!
Here's some initial experimenting. I need to do some research.
Edit: added some head ideas.

Hey guys, this is the first time I am trying to submit any such thing. So even though, the rules are pretty straight forward, I would really appreciate it if you could point out if I am doing anything wrong. Also I have never done creatures before, so all comments and crits would be more then welcome.
As for the rules, I do understand that it needs to be a dragon and should be black (most part at least).
These are just some head and pose sketches I tried for the dragon (Extremely rough, I apologize).
Here's my own contribution. Let's see how far I can push this.
Second and third Sketches
Putting it all together
I'd like to point out that although in Asia and Africa, the Black Panther is a melanistic Leopard, in the Americas, it is a melanistic Jaguar.
Pretty much any wild cat in the Panthera species can be a black panther.
Quick sketch. I went for a more eastern dragon with one head on both ends of the body. The second head is supposed to be a link to another world where the first can peer into and weave it's dimensions.
Some excellent work so far guys! Just to let you know this topic is one week long, but I'm not opposed to adding the extra week if desired!
here's some sketches and references...

Wanted to stay out Rob I swear! But, too good to pass up. The idea here is that each head has a function. See how it goes. Love you and Simon's sketches by the way.
I guess I'll forgive you this time, especially if you keep up the awesome works like this!
Genus, and sadly not.
One thing about the topic, though. What makes all the entries for this COW melanistic abberations rather than an example of a fully, normally black species? Would there need to be at least a glance at the regular coloration too? (Maybe with faint impressions of regular markings in the melanistic version, as per leopards. That'd look cool.)
Vermis: I'd say it isn't required, but if you really want to show your dragon with some slight colourations that's perfectly fine. I am aware that not all melanistic animals are completely black, the melanistic barn owl for example is actually a dark brown colour, but if you can keep it close to it being black with any indications of markings then that is perfectly fine if you want. That is why I listed the requirement as 'mostly' black, so the artists have a little wiggle room for such things if they want.
Still fairly new to all this. Attempted a few challenges before, never completed anything for the deadline. Here's hoping that changes with this one.
Im on the fence with the wings. Originally I had more compact ones stemming from the 'elbows' -if you will, like the Tapejara had (as can be seen in the smaller thumbnail). Though now Im flirting with the larger, perhaps more traditional structure.
Quite confused by the anatomy towards the shoulder blade closest to the viewer. I'll have to analyze it further.
(Also the purple colour is obviously not final. Just trying to establish the base for that purple/blue-ish shine some deep blacks emanate).
Some seriously inspired designs in here, already.
