E.O.W. Round #233: The Black Church

E.O.W. Round #233: The Black Church

    TOPIC: The Black Church
    suggested by Artanas

The word 'black' can mean a combination of things. It could be a description of a characteristic of a church, for instance the color or the architectural style. It could be the gloomy, melancholic mood, or maybe a church was burnt down or hit by an artillery shell and its foundation is scorched with a dark hue. Is it a mysterious or haunted location? Take it any direction you want, and make sure to have a back story that reveals why it's known as "The Black Church." Thanks to Artanas for the topic suggestion.

    Brief:
    1. Design an environment that adheres to the topic/theme.
    2. You must post at least once in this W.I.P. thread to be included in the finals thread for the voting poll.
    3. Include a back story for your church!

    Deadline: July 2, 2014

Congrats to OverlordGunnar for winning EOW #231!

Post your final entries in the "FINAL BURNING" thread which I will post a week or so before the due date. If you need more time to get your finals in, let me know and I'll extend the deadline.

Great topic, I'll have to sketch some things up as soon as I get off work. Good luck, everyone.

    EDIT: added a sketch

    The dwarfs' coal church
Made entirely of coal, this church was sculpted from one solid block that is part of the mine. Was made for the dwarfs can pray before entering the, full of terrible monsters, dark coal church.

My idea went full on Lovecraft...it's black because of the soot from the people the cultists burn. Crazy cyclopean church, with a bonfire out front.

I'm going to try my hand at this, the very least is that I can learn. Just don't know if I'll be able to finish this in time, but am going to put in an effort.

So first my EoW entry: Black church.

I went for a church within a spaceship and went on the assumption that they would use diffuse lightning of the stars to illuminate the church as it would illustrate the creation of God. Hence the black church.

The picture quality is bad (I've drawn it out and still need to add details (had to take a picture with my phone)), but at least it gives an idea of where I'm at. Next step is painting in the galaxy on the windows and then a whole lot of dark tones to suggest the shapes of all the material drawn so far.

    Hello
Well I really need to wotk on doing environments so
Here are my sketches so far
The idea is that its an abandoned old church
I will add more destruction to the church so that it goes with the ruins surrounding it, but first I wanted to get the overall shapes down
E.O.W. Round #233: The Black Church
E.O.W. Round #233: The Black Church

But now that I think about it, it doesn't really convey the idea of a "black church" I'll still finish it though because I really need the practice :/

On a dead world, baked by its own sun as it grows to a red dwarf, all that's left of the alien apocalyptic cult that predicted the event is the charred black skeleton of their church, preserved for centuries on the airless planet.

Will be nicely backlit by a giant red sun looming over the horizon.

Crooked horn: I'm liking 4 the best, with a fire at its heart.

    #11's my favourite...

I don't think I can churn out an EOW this week. My head's just not in this game.

Ah well... It was a good idea anyway.

I think I'm starting to get somewhere with this. Gotta get that perspective under control though.

It's all going wrong. I'm loosing the church in the background and I think it's all getting a bit busy overall. I also need to think of a reason why the lava is conveniently flowing round it. Maybe I should raise it up on a little hill?

Nice works guys. Sorry If I can't spend more words, but I'm always in rush with works and family. Made this in about five hours (damn to refine take times...). Started by an intersting fragment of a moschee's pic, than painted over and built my holed domes.

    The Black Church
They call it the Black Church, because is dark, with no candles, no lights in it. Just a brazier burn in the Core of the Black Church, feeded by the monks. But the entire building is leaved to the sunlight grace. Kings and Princes all around the world come here, guided by the wisdom of their mages and old sages to learn the secret of secrets, the most important thing for a leader to know. The Sun enlight the earth with his glory, equally, without refuse to warm even assassins and betrayer. That's the differnce between every leader and the Sun, a knowledge that's better for powerful man to understand as soon as possibile.

    @ Moirae

I think you don't need the lava to get your church going. I believe it will look better with just dusk falling over the planet. If you have time, I'd remove the lava and just keep the church black. But that's me.

No intention to say your church is rubbish, I think it's a pretty good idea. But you're lighting up the front with the lava and the back is being lit by the red sun. There's a clash there and to me I believe this is why my eye doesn't know where to go in the painting.

Only the oldest residents of the local village remember about the tragedy that took place. They are the only one who know who locked the people inside this church before the first torch was thrown...
