Don't tell me women are not the stuff of heroes,
I alone rode over the East Sea's winds for ten thousand leagues.
My poetic thoughts ever expand, like a sail between ocean and heaven.
I dreamed of your three islands, all gems, all dazzling with moonlight.
I grieve to think of the bronze camels, guardians of China, lost in thorns.
Ashamed, I have done nothing; not one victory to my name.
I simply make my war horse sweat. Grieving over my native land
hurts my heart. So tell me; how can I spend these days here?
A guest enjoying your spring winds?

Poem by Qiu Jin. Translated by Zachary Jean Chartkoff.

    Task:
Qiu Jin(1875-1907) was a Chinese revolutionary, feminist and writer. During her life she spoke out for women's rights, such as the freedom to marry, freedom of education, and the ending of the practice of foot binding. She was the head of the Datong school in Shaoxing. This school was officially used for the education of sport teachers, but was in secret a school for the military training of revolutionaries. After a failed uprising in 1907 against the Qing Dynasty she was caught and executed.

The task is to draw/paint Qiu Jin. Keep in mind the historical context. You are allowed to draw just the character but of course if you feel like going more illustrative (put her in a setting) I'm not going to stop you.

    Deadline:
    Sunday 29 June at midnight(gmt).

Don't forget to crit each other and help each other out. I accept both traditional and digital work, but make sure that scans and photos of traditional work are crisp and clean.

    Good luck!

    Good stuff

I've been doing some exploration, I still have to practice a lot of anatomy. I drew a nude figure and layed some clothes on top for now, planning to do a Mucha-ish painting as my end goal.

So I put the lines on multiply and put some colors underneath, then started rendering on top. Any suggestions for the face and body anatomy would be awesome, it's something that I have trouble with all the time.

I'm not going to post my work here because it's almost complete, anyway if I can say something about your drawing it's that her calves seem too much big (IMHO) for a female figure. See you at the finals.

Hey man, always post your work here even if it's almost finished. There's no reason not to, and you'll always miss flaws in your own work. (which is why I participate in these challenges in the first place) It's not a competition...

On the calves; you're absolutely right, I'll fix them. Thanks!

You are totally right but I have already finished my work. I'll make sure of posting my W.I.P. during the next challange.

Well, suit yourself. I recall there being a rule in past challenges where you had to post at least some wips of your work as you were working, maybe we should reinstall that?

    Anyway, here's my progress:

Hi beautiful artists of CA! This is my first teen challenge as well as CA post XD I lurk loads.(I'm 15; eligible)Name: Qiu Jin.jpg

I'm just going to post one WIP for now, and some others later.

I swear I really wish Qiu Jin was japanese so I can paint the red circle thing.
Many more changes to come, I'll probably illustrate books and school things in the background. Maybe even some veils. I'm very ambitious woops XD
    Correct thread now~

    Hi Aimee, welcome!

You're ambitious, don't let it discourage you
I like your entry so far. As far as feedback goes; the neck is very thick, and her eyes and brows seem to be asymetrical. Not impossible, but not great-looking either. Also, the shape of her hairdo is weird I think. Overall a strong start, the head looks pretty ok and I like the clothes.

    Good luck!

Haoning, I think we can all agree that it's not cool to dump random art here.

    Deagostinii,
Nice work. I don't really have anything substantial to say, just curious where you'll take this.

    Aimee,
Your face looks kinda unnatural, maybe it's a good idea to gather some reference for faces and necks. I'm not much of an expert myself but that always helps.

Hey everybody. Nice work everybody. Sorry, been a bit busy lately.
Nice start on the faces Aimee and Deagostinii. However if you want to enter the finished thread later I will require the full body as well.
Very nice picture of you as well clockwork. Her spine however is making an impossible angle at the bottom. Really nice pictures of you as well HaoningW! Although I have to agree with clockwork on this one hehe. Anyway, hope you will have time to enter again soon

    no problem Haoningw.

clockwork, I thought it to be kinda obvious that if you draw a character you draw the whole character but I geuss not? Ah well, suppose it is my mistake then. This time portraits are allowed but next time if I see just a portrait I will grab my pitchfork and drive you out of this thread. It actually is a good idea to do a challenge around portraits once. Maybe the one after the next one because I already have an idea for next weeks challenge.

    Anyway, 3 days to go!

Haha, I guess it's important to specify the rules before you start pitchforking people out

I didn't realise it had to be full body, but looking back now, I guess it was obvious
Anyway, he's my most recent WIP, since it doesn't have to be full body, I think I might cut the bottom, I cant fix the way her body looks

    Also, thanks for the comments!
Clockwork, since Qui Jin would wear mens clothes and have both genders attributes, I'm trying to show that through my painting, I guess that's my kinda hidden goal in this one
