I suggest you start studying gesture, for instance through Loomis mannikin, and study from life as much as you can. I like your black widow, but the posing/staging is awkward, with that hand growing from her head. Always keep an eye on the silhouette, and make sure it is readable!

Hmm okay, unfortunately I don't have access to live models. But I will do as much as I can

Oh also, are you suggesting me to study gesture/loomis mannikin to get a better sense of the proportion or the essence of the models? Just want to clarify that XD

With studying from life I mean studying people around you, on the street, in the mall, gym, school, whatever...

Oh also, are you suggesting me to study gesture/loomis mannikin to get a better sense of the proportion or the essence of the models? Just want to clarify that XD
I suggest you study gesture as a shorthand to jot down poses from life...

Don't let this discourage you! Gesture is hard, takes a lot of practice, doesn't usually look pretty, but, in my opinion, it is essential!

this is my two cents; I think her face is a bit small compared to the actual head. On top of that, her shoulders are kind of large, almost masculine. Her hips/lower torso are kind of thin compared to her upper body in general. Also the general foreshortening on the right leg (her left leg) isn't all that believable and could use some work. Thats just about the best I can offer without being a total asshole about this.

Pay more attention to structure, and perspective. It would not hurt to build a few dozen formal perspective plots until you internalize it to the extent you think in terms of perspective all the time.

I agree that gesture drawing is a good idea in your case, but do it from life. Find a figure drawing class / club /group nearby, or sketch people in the park.

Book recommendations: "Figure Drawing for All It's Worth" by Loomis, "Force: Dynamic Life Drawing for Animators" by Mattesi, "Cartoon Animation" by Blair.

Thanks arenhaus! Yeah I don't have a figure drawing class/club near me, so I'm kind of out of luck and yeah my mark making needs some work in photoshop.

    I will work on it.

In regards to your recent loomis post. You are headed in the right direction. But just as a personal note that helped me with anatomy, and still helps me with anatomy is looking at the mappings of the manikin, and then keeping those mappings on a layer beneath the fill in. Something like this. I'd also recommend working on becoming more confident with your strokes, there are a lot of "hairy" lines in these sketches, even though they are sketches, it doesn't hurt to practice your strokes.

    Hello all,

Just an update from my gesture study

I wish I could capture more details, but guess that comes from practice from what the book said.

    Slow
    down!

What apporoach are you following to gestures? I don't recognize Loomis mannikin, if that is what you are trying to do. Even more important, resist the urge to make lots of short, hairy lines! A line doesn't need to be perfect, but I rather see three complete lines, wrong, better and okayish, than one line broken in three...

I second what eezacque@xs4all.nl said. Besides, maybe you should open a sketchbook for these sketches, instead of updating this one thread.

It all began with a crocodile sketch...

If you know you have a hard time controlling the stylus (as most people do) compared to a pencil, why don't you sketch with a pencil?

Yeah I'll open a sketchbook thread! XD

I want to get a sketchpad, so far I work 12+ hour days as an IT Support; so in the unlikely event I have a weekend off, I'll go do that XD

And I was just trying to improve my mark making
