    Sorcerer's apprentice

I wanted to have your general thoughts about this picture I'm currently working on. I haven't rendered anything but I'm not necessarily aiming for detailed characters, I'm looking for a more "painterly" feel.

    Hi there.

I really like the concept here. I also like the light and colour. What I don't like is that the picture has a very static composition. It is very dull. A quick fix would be to cut off the edges. But I think that you could do more with it. The boy on the stair seem to have extremely long arms. I also think that you are gender sterotyping a bit by making the apprentice a boy and the dancing children girls, but that is just my opinion. I'm looking forward to see your progress.

The window is my favorite part of the painting.

Thanks Frida, very appreciated from you. Do you mean I should start it from the very begining to find a better composition? How would you imagine it?
About the right arm you're right, I'll fix it. I had my concerns too about the gender thing and I was planing to change one of the 3 character anyway.

Well I think that you could do some quick thumbnales and explore some ideas. With this concept the sky is the limit. With a staircase you can place your subjects and the "camera" wherever you like. You could also explore different styles of stairs. Like this one for instance.

Just do some very rough stuff and see if you can come up with something more exciting.

If you stick to what you got I think that it will help a lot to get rid of some dead areas and zoom in on the children.

    Hi mate

    Very nice idea !
we can feel the movement in the characters very well done.
i agree with Frida maybe if you focus more on the scene and may be lowering a bit the viewer point, it should be great

    Hi Stefrob

    i really like your picture
i would keep an eye on the perspektive of the stair - there are some mistakes.
there are some horizont lines that make the painting flat (green lines) change these lines.
i cut a little bit from the right sight like Frida.

The vertical layout works, but there's a lot of dead space at the top. Plus, the current placement of the cloud forms a tangent with the staircase so I wonder if moving it up a bit more would work. You've got a nice visual line pointing above the cloud with the figure on the right's wand, so perhaps place it in line with that?
