Charcoal and chalk sketches on a new brand of paper I bought. It occured to me I have none of those classical NC Wyeth-kind of illustrations in my portfolio, and sketched some horseriders.

    Death in December

Winter moons are wonderful in their massive, white presence (but then, I think the sky is pretty cool at any time), and I wanted to use a strong silhouette.

"Young Odin listens to Mimir's head", acrylics and coloured pencils, 50Χ40cm, canvas is an old picture frame with battered paper gessoed to it.
My first traditional painting in a long time. Odin always fascinated me by seeking knowledge above all else, and being such a witty guy. Most paintings focus on the missing eye, but I wanted to show why he's missing it in the first place - because of his unquenchable thirst for knowing. The head is that of Mimir, a giant (who are the oldest beings in the world and therefore have the most knowledge), that even if severed still speaks, and Odin is said to have it with him at all times to ask its counsel. I tried to make Mimir look not-quite-human.

I'm still trying if this "find images in chaos" approach works for me. I sponged leftover gouache on a page from a programmers' handbook, then used oil pastels and charcoal to sketch the figure.

A rework of an older character design. I wanted to try how far I could take it without dismantling it altogether, but the lame old pose was the crucial point so I had to redraw that.

A new planet I did in the evening for fun. I suppose they'd be a lot more impressive if I spent some more time on one every once in a while; but for a speedpainting this is okay.

Tiny ink pen drawings on leftover papers. The largest of the white ones is perhaps 4 by 6 cm, only the orange one is larger at approx. 10cm square (that's paper for rolling up coins for the bank). I call the series "Busy hands" and take maybe ten minutes for each.

The black dog has stuck with me since I saw a film about Poe where he says that 'unhappiness had followed him like a black dog', and I really liked the idea. I also like drawing gnarled trees, so here we are.

A piece for my world Genius Loci. I still wonder if I should do something about the contrast, but in principle the extremely foggy atmosphere was what I was looking for.

I liked the idea of adding text in the background, and I think it worked nicely. It doesn't say anything specific, but I tried to invoke the idea of an adventurous story being retold, to fit with the image.

A "stream of consciousness" piece if you will, although I see these only as doodles and not yet as anything I'd work into a finished state.

Graphite block sketches. The samurai just realized those are child demons. The mermaid kinda got out of hand, because I found it too hard to create detail in a shaded area with a block of 2cm square and lost interest.

Sketches done with ink pens, over leftover paints applied with palette knifes. I usually plan to use the shapes apparent in the paint, but mostly just draw over it. It's still more interesting than just the sketch, I think.

Sometimes you start sketching aimessly, and just like that, worlds and stories emerge. This tall, spirit-protected lady has been put in chains and is being accused by the king's right-hand man; the king wasn't supposed to look this tall, but maybe he's of the same people as the prisoner? And the court jester besides the throne apparently has his own thoughts about events.

I've been revisiting a lot of old ideas and repainting them to see what I can do with them now. The carpet ride was a speedpainting done for a daily sketch challenge a few years ago. Unlike other repaints I did recently this is a complete overhaul with only the same idea, instead of overpainting an existing illustration.

A6 acrylics drawings. Again with leftover paints. Yeah, I'm really not that good in preparing palettes, there's always five times as much paint as I need.
