    Kris Turvey's sketchbook

Hi there, thanks for stopping by. I'm a concept artist at Kuato Studios in London. I used to post on CA a long time ago under the name lightpunk and thought it was time to start a new sketchbook! Thanks for looking!

    Thanks R-K and Aya-Kun!

Started doing this for the current EOW but it morphed into something else...and a couple head studies from photos, trying out some new methods for painting skin

I've got to say I love your creature design in particular. I really find them interesting. Not over the top to try and force the interest either. Kudos.

    Thanks guys!

@Gull I've been drawing since I was a kid but 'seriously' for about 5 and professionally for about 2.5

Going to try and post a bit more frequently in here from now on!

Here is a little head study from photo ref. I'm experimenting at the moment with trying to apply some traditional underpainting techniques like verdaccio to digital painting to get nice skin tones.

Thanks for stopping by my sketchbook I think you have a very unique style overall, maybe try experimenting with a more painterly style that's less rendered?

Nice work dude, you have some killer environments here! The Top image is particularly kickass. Is part of it 3D rendering?

Thanks Kimonas! Yep, for that one I did a b&w thumbnail first, then blocked out the basic shapes in maya and then painted and phototextured over the top.

Here's a few older bits. Some concepts from a movie called 'iBoy' which is currently in production with StudioCanal (reproduced with permission) and some older games concepts.

Wow, it's a shame I had never stumbled upon your sketchbook. The work here is on another level. Is there any other place you update more frequently or we can find more of your work?
I want more scifi stuff; environments, vehicles, whatever... They are really inspiring!

Thanks for dropping by my sketchbook, it means a lot coming from you

Hey thanks for the kind words Mihachris. I have a website too at www.kristurvey.com but will try and post here more often. You inspired me to go and dig out my Forbes master copy after seeing yours - here it is! This was started prob about 2 years ago, I used to work on it off and on in between other work - must have spent about 2 days on it in total. I remember I was trying to use this study to improve colour observation, so all use of the colour picker was banned!

Really cool Master study. I think it is in James Gurney's colour and light book? In the post before that, the ship in the penultimate environment is too dark. Obviously you were darkening the value to make it stand out more but I think you should do that with colour instead. You did a similar thing with one of your thumbnail sketches and as a viewer it felt uncomfortable. Other than that awesome stuff! It's cool to see an industry pro posting on something other than ArtStation and Facebook!

I don't actually understand how you call this unfinished
It's a beautiful study and I really love the small color variations you've put in there. I generally don't spend more than a day (which is max 3h but generally 1,5h - 2h) in a study, cause I want to do a different study every day and maybe learn something new. Now that I compare your study to mine, maybe I should start doing it. I guess taking a master study to a more finished state, has many good lessons to offer too.

Can't wait for more inspirational stuff!

Well done dude, that master study is lookin good. I was thinking about starting out learning to use 3d underlays. A lot of people talk about z brush too. Where do you think the best place to start is?

That starship school bus is really cool! I don't have any critiques to offer here, however.
