CHOW #352 :: Steampunk Storm Chaser

CHOW #352 :: Steampunk Storm Chaser

    Character of the Week #352
    Steampunk Storm Chaser

    Deadline - Sunday, May 18th 10PM GMT

Storm chasing is just a hobby to some people, but then there are the serious pursuers of danger who seek to harness the power of the storms. Equipped with a large pack, to attract a lightning strike, it's meant to hold the energy produced from the storm, like a battery. This energy is used to power their facilities. One strike is free power for a week, but they must keep up with the chase!

    The Guidelines:
    • Can be male or female
    • Must be human
    • Must be carrying an energy storage unit which is also a conductor.
    • Genre is Steampunk.
    • NO background this week. Follow the set of rules listed below.

    The Rules
    • Finals must be posted in the finals thread before the deadline
    • Final post must include the CHoW # and the artists username at the bottom of the image within, at least, a footer bar(TYPED, NOT WRITTEN)
    • At least 3/4 of the character must be visible. No back views are allowed without a front please.
    • Sketches or rushed artwork will not be accepted into the poll
    • No photograph paint overs, must be 100% original work
    • At least two wips posted with your final in the finals thread
    • NO ENVIRONMENT BACKGROUNDS! You may use simple shapes, gradients or silhouettes
    • Please read through the thread for any posts made by the mod. They likely answered a question that was asked about the challenge!
    • Have fun!

I have a question again, havok. I know there's no background, but what if I want to pick the kite? its gonna have to be in some form of cloud. do I have to leave that cloud 'blank'?

The rule means no environment background. If you want to give it a cloudy atmosphere, that should be fine.

@ashess, nice approach with the winged ideas, really risky (if brought to real life, haha).

@stringfellowart, I liked the kite idea! Do you intend to use both characters to this week's theme?

@peterhurman, I would suggest giving some weight to the front part to give him more balance. The storage on his back seem to be something pretty heavy for someone with his body shape to carry

@st0neface, Liked your sketches, just think it is pretty risky having something like that on her head, haha

@tenpeoplez, nice sketches, I liked the second one, specially the colors and the brightness of the storage.

@AdrienneRose, I liked the poses you've made, it features the character well. Have you tried working on some more specific pose that would follow the task of a storm chaser? Maybe looking at the sky, like seeking for something, I think it would work well. This week's theme is really good, I'm eager to see the look you'll give her.

Here's my concept. I'll work on a spider-like machine to be his storage, thinking about moving a heavy piece and reaching higher heights.
My character will control this machine with hands and legs, maybe the later version will have a better zoomed in view of him.
Obviously, this will not be his final facial expression

Thanks Marco. I suppose that I could add that, I was thinking about it, but, it just wasn't speaking to me. I was kind of wondering WHAT on earth she would actually do. I am contemplating it being a time where there was no weather. But, that's still... in the thinking stages.

Marco - Thanks man! i'm overall not happy with the character, tho..
been doing some more sketches but haven't decided on pretty much anything yet.
Still don't get the right steam-punk-feel. By the way im really diggin your idea,
that the character is not touching the ground at all. A simple and straight way
to explain that hes safe from the electricity (And by simple i mean good
tenpeoplez - I like em both but the first one would be my choice. He seems fit for the job :]
Ashess - all your thumbs look promising. looking forward for your next version.
Adrienne - You're approach seems to be pretty well thought through. Wich is good, just don't forget to go a little crazy every now and then. That would be a good advice for myself as well i guess

Thanks @St0neface! I tend to get pretty methodological when it comes to things like this, but to be honest... This is only my second character design ever!! lol. I am pretty new to it. But I am learning lots seeing other people's process too! So, please be sure to share all your steps!

    And everyone else!

I feel like I could be doing this a different way.

    My approach is:

    1. Gather tons of inspiring reference -
    Name: Steampunk-storm-chaser-REF.jpg
Views: 1029
Size: 255.8 KB

    2. Copy/paste requirements (top left of above image).Jot down a couple of ideas (top right of ref image above).

    3. Figure out poses (pasted them into ref image).

    4. Sketch out some poses (this post). Pick favorite.

    5. Sketch out clothing ideas. Pick favorite.

    6. Start finalizing.
And I guess I just go on from there...

*Goes to do research on Character Design Approaches*.

Hey Adrienne - Absolutely nothing wrong with your approach. Hope i did not confuse you. Having a strategy helps a lot. I'm impressed! You have done this only once before and already developed such a plan. Just keep doing it the way its comfortable for you. Just don't get caught up in strategy. And again, nothing wrong. Keep up the good work
As for my own approach, it is pretty similar. Doesn't always work out tho..
    1. sketch out some initial ideas
    2. collect reference stuff: fotos, drawings, sometimes videos (for example a short ARTE documentation about steam punk), wikipedia..
    3. go back sketching (further defining the gear/clothes/anatomy... )
    4. get down a decent pose/action and put it all together
    5. paint

Ashesthose are some amazing thumbnails, I like the bird mask in particular. It's a very popular look with steampunk.
tenpeoplez the leg armour/details on the second drawing is great.
AdrienneRosethe wastecoat option in the second line looks great

@The Colorado Kid: very steampunk like beard! I can't wait to see how you fill it in with details
@Master Troglodyte: impressive sketch on her face, I can't wait to see more on how she's the storm chaser!
@Clare Belshaw: nice coloring and concept idea! The pose is definitely dramatic and nice.
@St0neface: Absolutely amazed at the sketches, it already definitely brings a story and "world" to it. I personally love masks and head pieces so that profile view one with a sweet helmet might be my favorite!
@Tenpeoplez: both of the designs are amazing I'd love to see the first one detailed more though! I like the full suit idea.
@Peterhurman: the sketch and design of the character is very nice. The amount of empowering shapes in the designs allows me to follow the character outline and makes it pop out. Great job! Can't wait to see more.
@stringfellowart: Really like the idea of these characters, I think it brings in a story to tell and makes me curious to who/what they do. The kite was a nice addition with the whole storm chaser idea, and the facial expressions are wonderfully detailed!

    Here's my initial wip.

in the situation he's going to be in, a full-body suit would be a logical measure ... I mean rain, wind and lightning ... XD

Cool start here. I've never really gotten into the steampunk style so would be a good one to try.

I'm going for a conductor-glove that transfers the energy to the backpack. Might have to make the backpack bigger, or perhaps make it hang from the shoulder, to make it more prominent.

I'm feeling kinda lost with my character, I would like to hear some suggestion from you guys. Which one should I follow? Or shouldn't I follow any of these at all?
They are not carrying the entire steampunk features yet, I would like to hear any suggestion regarding the concept itself

Quick question, I know the prompt says human, but does that mean it has to be completely human or can it be a humanoid race such as an elf or Githyanki etc?

(VERY) rough first pass. I need to go run and eat some macaroons, but I'll get back to working on this tonight &... y'know. Fix everything.

Mostly going for the mood & feels and basic colour palette to start with.

@Marco Lombardi: I would stick with the first one. I like the idea of a spider pack. The second looks little too "Dr. Octopus". Plus I think the first dude has more personality. Just reduce his poor head, as it looks a tad bit disproportional (I assume you were looking for a cartoony look.. but I don't think that's working right now) and give him a neck, I'm pretty sure that will make him look much more natural.
Also about the spider legs, but this is totally personal preference: I'd go with a design that's more.. uhm, mechanical and less organic looking. If you know what I mean? Give them some hard edges, let us see the hinges, the segments and how they articulate with each other, some wires and pistons, etc.

@Wuggy: Looking pretty nice! Cool design. Only thing to remark is that the legs look a little short.

Don't see much more to critique so far, but kudos everybody for your work. Lots of really cool entries!

Oh @stringfellowart: The older girl from your initial sketch looks quite a bit like your avatar picture. haha Sorry, I needed to say that. Love the adventure-y feel to reached with the colors. Keep it up.

My sketches so far. I've never, ever done steampunk before... I really don't know what to aim for. >_> this should prove quite a challenge
