    LivingInfinite - Composition 1.1

    Whoa! Okay. Let's do this! I picked these two Bouguereau paintings 'cause lately I'm looking at ways to compose the figure, and that dude was pretty good at it.

    Okay, so the main thing I noticed here was how the rock formations and background shapes basically all point at the feet/hands area, creating a second focal point. That's kind of neat!

    The thing the stood out to me on this one was how the dark patch to the right of the girl merges with the girl's shadow, and continues through to the flowers in her hands, to form this crescent moon shape. It seems to echo the bend of her nearest arm, the right contour of her face, and the right contour of her skirt.

    Okay! Here's a Sargent portrait, and a Craig Mullins painting, just because I wanted to do something a little simpler, since those first two went a fair bit over the time limit >.<

    One thing I noticed was how strategically the strands of hair over the shoulders are placed. I spent a lot of time in the face, but it still looked silly until I tried to match the placement of that hair.

    I thought this was going to be simple but it really gave me problems. Took me a while to realize I had to switch up the brush to match some of the textures in there...I always kind of saw texture as icing on the cake, I did not realize how big of a deal it can be.

    excellent start.

    my main suggestion at this point is simply to use textured brushes to capture the painting surface, which is key to both edge and mood many times. It also gets rid of that overly slick photoshop painting look, to do so.

    with that said you have a great eye for subtle value movements and for capturing mood. Keep up the great work and keep pushing for the most accuracy possible in shape, value, and edge.

    Thanks for the advice, Jason. Totally see your point about the 'slick' digital look. I tried to get some texture on there this time around, hopefully it's an improvement.

    OK...couple thoughts. First, Awesome job with your shapes, values and your edges. These are some beautiful studies. With that being said, I still think you can push the surface/texture a little bit more. photoshop can have such an overly slick feel. It has its time and place for sure...but I think you will see a more accurate mood if you suggest a little more of the surface/texture in the image.

    The Gerome is a beauty. That was a brave choice and you aced it. At this point you are up and moving and know what to do. I look forward to your updates.

    So impressed with the level you have taken these too. Please may I ask, are you using a texture brush on number 7 or overlaying stuff? Blown away by the quality there. I'm kinda struggling with adding convincing texture.

    Seriously few of your studies, cannot distinguish which one is your work. So realistic as original. Very nice.
