Not sure if this is the right forum section for this, but here goes:
So these 2 programmer guys are making a program to make animated comics for phones, and they need artists to make the first comics to demonstrate the app. They're promising a partnership and pretty much a percentage of the revenue if this thing lifts off.
It sounds pretty cool, but... is this the type of bad "speculative" job artists should avoid? Not to mention the awkwardness of making comics for a tiny screen, the comics won't even be able to have more than 1 panel seen at a time.
Any guidance on this? :/
It's up to you. If this app sells super well and you get great royalties on it, that could pay off for you.
I would take a second to do some research and crunch the numbers though. How much are they selling the app for, what percentage is your royalty, what are you going to get for every app sale, how many purchases will it take for you to make back the price of your time for the total amount of comics you're making up front, etc. Also take some time to look around and see if there are any similar apps and how well or poorly they've done.
People tend to avoid jobs like this because the chances of getting a decent wage for their work is incredibly low. There are so many apps out there that no one is buying. But if it's a project that you really believe in and want to be a part of, that's a risk you're just going to have to take.
Grinnikend door het leven...
Thanks for the feedback guys!
Maybe I could work out some deal where I'll get paid at least a certain amount for a comic, but otherwise I'm not committing to this project.
Finding good art jobs is hard :/
