    Alien mining and landscape WIP

    Hi,

I'm a complete newbie. I would like any thoughts on this painting, including suggestions to improve it and pointing out anything majorly wrong with it. I'm thinking that my next step might be to try to flesh out the foreground?

Good work on the colour, but I felt that the composition definitely can be improved, as well as the sky.
    Overall, not a bad piece.

Thanks. I'll see what I can do about both (composition and sky) and once done, I'll post a follow up with a (hopefully) improved version of this piece.

Basically it looks like it's made out of 3 completely flat layers. You might want to give some volume (and correct perspective) to each layer, make them linked to one another and create depth and volume over all.

Thanks. Looking at it now, this is very true (and now very obvious). I'll make the layers more connected (with correct perspective -- I'll try one-point first since I think that should work for this).

Is this better... or worse? It's still very much a WIP, but I'm not sure I'm going in the right direction with it...

It's better, but think of everything as 3d shapes, not flat surfaces. I mean, imagine a mountain in the shape of a pyramid. What you're doing here is drawing a triangle. What you should be doing is drawing a pyramid in perspective. I hope you get the difference.

Thanks Stephou. I'll put in more work on it to make it more 3 dimensional and flesh out a lot of details and add texture and such (it will take me a while) and once done, I'll post it here.

    Thanks again for your help.

This is much better than the previous version I remember. I think you could still benefit from using the atmospheric perspective to build volumes though. I mean, if you take a mountain, parts of it will be closer to the viewer and will have more contrast, while others will be further away and will be fainter. Some of the mountains still look a bit flat. But like I said, there's already alot of improvement.

Thanks. I'll see if I can revisit the mountains to try to make them less flat.
