    Knight Portrait wip

Trying to take a break from the hard work of my senior year game art project and do a digital painting to loosen up. However I do hope and really want this to be an portfolio piece So any critiques are welcome. The character (just in case someone should asks) is a random character that just kind of happened, and is very androgynous, But I mean for the character to be a guy. Heck maybe it's my anime influences coming though?

You need to use values to build the shape, here it's all wonky and flat in some places where it shouldn't. Where did you define the light source ?

I thought I did, I'm probably missing something.

Where, is it wonky? I need to know what to fix.

The light source is spot lighted on his face mostly but somewhat diffused. Kind of like a hole in a cavewith a beam of light coming though. I guess I wanted him to feel a little mysterious.

    Also here's an update !!

Well my comment was short simply for the sake of getting some attention on this thread.

Basically you should use some reference for the face. The way you made the light on there makes it look like he has a robot metallic face. The skin reacts to light in a much softer way. Also, there are no angles that strong on the cheeks or forehead. The light also doesn't look like what you describe it, just make sure to keep it very consistent.

There are also lines, that I don't really understand why there are here for. Make sure to really be sure if you want to use some black lines or if you don't.

Also, partially due to your lighting, some surfaces seem to have the wrong angle/perspective. The feathers seem to be flat rather than somewhat follow his head. The cheek in the shadow also seems to be orientated towards us.

The hair also looks like a thick mass rather than looking hair-like. Once again, a reference can help.
Also, are the circles on his shoulders supposed to be armour ? If yes, get the lighting and reflections correct.

Getting "Successful Drawing" and "Creative Illustration" by Loomis and practicing from life would be good.

You still have wonky anatomy. The nose isn't facing the same direction as the eyes, and the cheek in the shadow isn't at the right angle and so on. At least find a reference to place the places at the right place with the correct orientation.

Hey, real nice rendering, I like the mood and colors really well. The way you've detailed the ear and the feathers with bold lines but still knocked them back looks really pro to me. You've still got some wonky anatomy, though. The far eye is placed too wide, making the eyes spaced too far away. The distance between the eyes right now is the same as for a face seen straight on. The ball of the nose is pretty small and placed far down, leaving you with little room between the nose and the mouth.

Here's a crude bit of photoshopping and mouse-painting, but hopefully you get the idea:

I also made the upper lip darker, shading it more as if it's a downward facing plane than a cylinder. The blue lines show how I think of the painted part of the armor curving around the knight, at the moment you haven't addressed the perspective there properly and it flattens the image around those parts.

Yes it looks unnatural, more like a wig than real hair. Look up some references.

It all began with a crocodile sketch...

Ok, I think I fixed the hair, and I feel that I'm about done with this piece now. Any other critiques before I declare this one finished ?
