ROUND#318: Jewelled Matriarch
ROUND#318: Jewelled Matriarch
I decided to have a gander through the suggestions thread for this week, I want to give a shout out to Charanty for their suggestion, the Jewelled Matriarch. In case you don't know a matriarch is the dominant alpha female within a society or group. A parade of elephants for example is lead by a matriarchal female. Keep in mind some species of animals will change their appearance slightly if they hold authority over their society, such as the Silverback Gorilla. So in your design you will use gems, minerals, stones, crystals, pretty looking objects, etc; to suggest this matriarch's authority over it's group. Whether it collects jewels or if they grow naturally on the creature itself is up to you. Design the Jewelled Matriarch!
-your creature is covered with gems, stones, minerals, all sorts of pretty things. Whether they collect them from their environment or they naturally grow as part of the anatomy.
-you are designing the matriarch of the species, there must be some authority in it's appearance over other individuals of the species
-you may show us some less impressive specimens as well, but the matriarch must be the main focus
Remember folks, you are free to suggest your own ideas for topics in the Topic Suggestions Thread! If you have any suggestions that you think may make a good topic to design creatures then let her rip!

It is cutting it a bit close, perhaps try different head designs to see if you can come up with something more animalistic...
Hello! It's my first time entering! I'm excited to be here.
I've been working on some thumbnails for my Jeweled Matriarch. I'm trying to go with a predatory bird thing.
Lunaairis: Sweet, welcome to the party! Make the beak made of gemstone
ToddBushman: I think teeth should be a bit smaller; and maybe add more of a body?
Dunno if this is better, I also lost interest in this one, maybe I'll begin from a scratch.
Hi people ! First COW here, I am not confortable with designing creatures (read : I never do that seriously) but I want to try this one.
Here is my first WIP. I will go with an oceanic creature. This one gets the jewelry by eating the rests of sunken ships, whatever it can find a bit shiny. The jewelry or other material is then stored in little pockets hanging from the head of the creature, as well as a bit along the spine. The shinier the creature is, the higher it is in the hierarchy of its group : these parts of unorganic material dissuades predators to eat it and remaining on its side is a protection. Predators will then prefer the ones having eaten only wood or bones from the vessels. It remains one major predator for the matriarch of the group : human-like creatres of the surface, trying to get rich by fishing one.
Second WIP - what do you think ?
Hey guys, also my first time creating a creature. I'd love some feedback on it. This species are subterranean diggers with large claws and a drill shaped tusk. They have long hair to protect their eyes and mouths. The largest females of the species have powerful arms and the best tusks for digging encase their tusks in precious gems to help dig and with the excess decorate their mane's with the gems to show their strength.
@Yurishka your design looks really beautiful, at first glance I though it was a bird but the movement image give a clear idea of almost flying through water. The second WIP makes it look a little like it has whiskers, wondering if that's the idea?
@Spellsword59 that looks fantastic!
Here are some ideas I've come up with. I don't know if I'll go with any of these yet, but it's a start.
Here's the draft in colour.
Don't know how to approach the body yet..
Such great work here. Here's my first WIP post.
Work in progress, going to add background and some more elements.
I have an interesting concept for these guys... Going to draw on the jewels later

I'd like to see more of the 3rd on going left to right. The whale critter.
This is my first time in a contest. Hope I'm not breaking any rules I love the works presented here so far, so thought it would be great to join.
Initial idea. Something like a sea-unicorn. The queen has a self illuminating stone on its tail. The stone is passed on from generation to generation and the brightness depends on how long the creature has been holding onto it.
Hope I'll finish this on time!
Here's an update. need to add more jewels for sure.
Hey! First post here from a long time stalker. Always been too scared to post my art on here but figured I would (wo)man up XD
My concept for the matriarch is for this lady in my WIP. In my species, the matriarch is chosen by definition of their large head crest.
They are unique and in the blood line lies a gene that only one female will carry per generation. They live for 300 years, are significantly larger than the males of the species and lesser females. I doodled a little example of scale next to here for personal ref.
Essentially the gemstones and precious elements that are embedded in her skin and mainly her head crest, continue to multiply and become an impressive display when the matriarch reaches full prime. However, the gems are embedded so deep in her body and head, that eventually, this will be the cause of her death. Before then she must pass on the gene to one of males during the mating season. This will only happen once. And after the male carrying the gene has intercourse with a chosen female, the male will die. All of this must take place in a 12 hour window and is in an aim to preserve the matriarch line.
The colouration will be similar to a magpie for her with colourfull gems, males are very dull in colour and much like a lizard, have a 'sheen' to their skin.
I have combined a few ideas for this concept, and maybe gone into the thought process a little too much haha. But I would love to hear what you think. Will post another WIP soon with some color!
Hope you like!
Tear your dreams asunder. Every broken word.
I threw around some ideas but ended up at a mole rat mixed with a mole cricket type creature that utilized diamonds that workers embedded into the matriarch to mark her role in the colony as the queen. It might be a bit simple looking so i'll add some more features as I work further on it.
Nice entries so far, I really like scorge's, she is definitely pampered ain't she?
Commissions OPEN!! http://kuroart.weebly.com/
@Spellsword95 i enjoyed watching the progression of your piece through the wips that you posted. and use of circle/ring brush. your post #7 is hella nice. good job with the skin!
@Yurishka your post #9 shows the creature in movement. good job, it flows...
@Clare Belshaw i would say take a look at this
it's a page from Preston Blair's book on animation. I feel that it powerfully demonstrates the importance of gesture lines.
this is pretty new. glen vilipu doing a demo.
i can see that you went straight to fur, jewels and details like claws. start with a gesture, pose or essence of the creature through lines, shapes. i would say even before the construction. and do details last. your sketch is focusing on the outline lines. think about the inside line, the gesture line which will eventually disappear.
i'll try and give you some tips as far as taking your sketch and beginning to color it or paint it. save black for last and only use a little bit of it. instead think about big blocks of value. it looks like you are using a big black airbrush. try 2 new things, the selection tool and calligraphy brushes. block in major values first. make it work in few values, then progressively add more.
@scorge you are dropping some HEAT!!! well done...
@BlindLynx nice job with the crackling of the skin on his back. maybe some folds or wrinkles on the skin where the neck is bending?
@Xionix i like the connection between jewels and an underground, in the dirt creature. good thinking. don't forget the rocks...

@Vezun thanks so much for those. I've used the gesture lines for human drawing but hadn't really considered them for creature work, gotta remember not to skip a first step like that. Also I love how disturbing the limbs in your work are. The uncanny sense really adds to how imposing it is.
@Clare Belshaw thanks. i was going for a Hayao Miyazaki weird, surreal creature feel. with a graphic to real mixture. so certain elements are very simple to almost graphic. like almost balloon limbs. as if a Hayao Miyazaki kind of a guy were to do a 3D animated movie. so, the creature is somewhere in between "attack of the clones" and "Howl's Moving Castle".
