Art is not about competing against others and being better than everyone else, but it is about competing against yourself and discovering your greatest potential!

@Vyse - Thanx =) 3 and 5 are my fav too till now. I like your concept, even if I'd like to see a bit more of that pit, and the rock over the thorne isn't charming as it could be. Pay attention to be clear on midground, at the moment the read is a bit confused for me especially for second row of rocks. There is a kind of pattern repetition (round rock on the mid ground, square rock, round rock on the back ground), so that area is a bit boring. =D Oh, and I forgot to mentionate the throne itself: make it more intersting =). Now wait for mine, than rip me apart =D

Vagabond418: If you're feeling lost try adding a main focal point and work out from that. Right now you have a really epic looking cave but no focal point to draw they eye and tell a story.

After searching for reference images I instantly regretted suggesting this topic. Still I pushed on and bashed together the two attached images.

Thinking on how best to convey my own fear of spiders.

@Vyse: YO MAAAAN =D You gave it a bust! Yep, the throne is kinda capturing eye now... And is so funny too, with the king scratching his head, and that lazy pose! Love this work! And Italian Spiderman its amazing too (I'm italian =D).
@LukasN - I love your spiderweb! Are so personal and stylized, but still so true.
@Flame Unquenchable: ehi! Nice to see you here around again! NOw come the hardest part: to move from a good thumb to a work... And I have just a pinch of spare time for this. Just hope to finish it! I will reach my goal if my pic will come out differnt by any Shelob's lair...

    Lair

So been hopping about trying all the challenges out and realized I really like environments a ton, and this particular one feels really interesting. Started on this one and when I get a chance to work on it some more at my PC I will post some more, but for now this is where I am at. It is a touch on the large size to easily read on the screen but I can't seem to resize it appropriately from my iPad. Either way it is coming along I am enjoying the challenge extensively, still a far cry from the quality I have seen so far but I have learned a lot from this so far, just building details and forms as I go at the moment. What resolution is everyone doing their work at out of curiosity?

Going to put some giant spider eyes in the very back of the cave I think. Still thinking it through, but it coming together so fast, really loving building from such random marks.

I'm scared of spiders, but If I can avoid looking at them and just "hint" at their presence I will give this a shot lol

    @Lukasn I love your idea!
@Mooglesarelittle Nice climat and lights! Especially the second one!

My first work in EOW. The idea of a lair in a dark and dense forest. Full of traps and corners. I hope you like it!

Hello people, I'm going to give this a shot.
Progress so far, I kind of wanted to give it a bit of an alien vibe, so I've gone heavy on the egg clutches
I'm pretty much done, just have to tighten everything up and do another detail pass.

OverlordGunnar: This is looking suitably creepy! I think the image appears a little flat, especially the plane in which the spiders sit. It might look quite cool if you push the spider on the right into the foreground.

DeaDer: This is a really solid start, the lighting and the mood is down, just gotta keep going.

Delofasht: Hard to critique as it's so early but you already have a defined lighting and mood which is ace. Focus on retaining that while you render everything to a final level.

Vyse: I Italian Spiderman. Your piece is looking solid! My main critique would be that the guy in the thrown is quite difficult to make out. Maybe a lit torch or a light ray could help illuminate him?

Yusuf Zmirlin: Really nice colours but the image is desperately calling out for some story elements. Maybe an explorer climbing over the rocks or a spider waiting for prey.

LukasN: These are ace! I really like the second one and it's definitely the most creepy. I would suggest checking out reference of cobwebs and see if you can incorperate some of the lighter transparent webs.

BlindLynx: Hey Lynx your thumbnails show promise but they're quite hard to critique as they're quite abstract but for what it's worth 3,5 and 6 are my favourites

Here's another update from me. Still a lot of extra work needed but it's getting there.

(If it isn't completely obvious, yeah I've been playing a ton of Dark Souls 2 >_>)

@OverlordGunnar - Yay, I agree with MoogleSare. A big spider on the right, as a "responsoir" could help to get in.
@DeaDer - I like the concept, and the spotlight not on the subject. Even if very painty the work seems solid, just the mangrove tree on the left looks a bit too raw for me.
@MoogleSare - Do u use a brush for the balustrade and than you raster it and put em on transform prospective?

Here is a wip... I worked yesterday night on it, but I was so tired, that today I'm really pissed off with the result. I'm proud of the background nighly mountain... The rest is to trash. So I will soon post another lightday wip I suppose, so don't waste your time with crits on this. =)

Thanks for the feedback Mooglesarelittle!. I really like your last piece. It's a solid composition with interesting perspective. I feel like it could benefit even more if you darken the lower left corner (especially the railing) and bring up few highlights on top of the web where it meets a "ceiling".

BlindLynx- You did cool thumbnails in the beginning. I like nr:3,2,6 - they've got some interesting things going on there, like perspective, foreground and background elements, interesting shapes. My favorite would be nr.3.

OverlordGunnar- Really good job I feel like u nailed it! Really nice mood, good sense of space, creepiness all over. I agree with what others said about foreground spider. Make it bigger, so it pops in front more. But overall my favorite!

DeaDer- I like the mood of your environment. You just need to add more elements that would suggest off arachnid's living there!

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I played around with it for a while but felt like the composition was becoming a bit heavy on one side, so I took the idea of making a much bigger spider but put it over the other side. I also made it a much creepier spider

The worst thing about looking for spider images on google, is the inevitable spider 'bite' photos... eeewwwww....

OverlordGunnar: Yeeeeaaaah this is a great improvement! I think some spiders in the distance would look really good and would help to convey the scale of the cave.

BlindLynx: Loving the environment you're building here. I would try adding some foreground rocks to help convey a better sense of depth. Be wary of the edges of your canvas, right now my eye just drifts off the page but with your compositions you need the viewers gaze to remain in the centre. For the hand railings I draw a silhouette of them as a flat 2d object without perspective and then I free transform > distort them into perspective, it's a million times faster than painting them in free hand

Here is my final! Quite happy with how this turned out, especially the egg sacks T_T.

    Thank you guys
@BlindLynx: I think your first WIP, has better lighitng and climat, than the newest.

I worked with my picture, I add some more details, like web or spider's eggs, also what took the longest time compositon. I changed composition, I think for better. Also add character. So here next WIP.

About my scene: This is enter to the spiders liar. In the centre Spider's Guard is showing himself to the guest. Other spiders are hiding around and observing.
