    Row, Row, fight the Power!

    Hey All!

My old Sketchbook was no longer serving its purpose, and had to be put down. But from its ashes bursts forth this sketchbook, to take down the oppressive overlords and kick reason to the curb!

I've worked as a 3D artist for 4 years now doing concept work and modeling for a number of company's. I've worked on advertisements, games and TV shows but I've never been completely happy with it.
I always wanted to draw and when I got into 3D that dream fell of the edge of a cliff. But its climbed back out! I've decided to get back to what I loved doing, even if I have to start from the ground up again.

You've got to have goals and so I'll list mine here. Nothing wrong with aiming for the skies!
    - Do a piece of art for a Magic the Gathering card
    - Put out a book of illustrations (With a theme, not just to show off)
    - create my own IP

This sketch book will be my daily studies and exercises.

    First post reserved for thumb.

Drawing from today. Gesture drawing, Octo-sketch, surfaces, A random face and vehicles. I have a huge problem drawing vehicles, so hard to fight perspective and proportion. its why I did 3D in the first place.

    Hey Oatestwder,

Your older work is impressive, I especially enjoyed the Spirited Away redesigns.

Even though 3D wasnt your first choice, having a background in 3D modelling should help you progress with your 2D work greatly.

The amount of studies on show are great to see, you obviously understand how important those fundamentals are.

    Keep it up!

Mothman: Thanks man! yea I plan to focus strongly on the fundamentals for the foreseeable future, gotta get those down before I can do anything!

Attended a workshop today hosted by Maciej Kuciara. Amazing, the guy is insanely talented.

Out all day so I dindt get much time to practice. Instead I spent an hour tonight testing out Keyshot, with scratches added in Photoshop.

So the point of this sketchbook is for me to upload everything, no matter how unhappy I am with it. Well I'm pretty unhappy with today's offering, but that's how it goes!

I had such plans for today... and then I had to go and get sick. I've felt terrible all day, not even well enough to draw as I have a constant headache.

Here's some of the stuff I got done before that. There's more but don't feel up to scanning anything

beautiful start! I envy your trucks and tanks haha when it comes to vehicles i have the attention span of a goldfish. Your animal sketches are also looking great too. I think you need to take more time with the foundation of your faces though(proportion) I'm excited to see more from you.

ugh I have the same short attention span, the vehicles are killing me. A agree with my facial structure and proportions, your faces look great! any books or artists you would recommend for this?

The only thing i would recommend, since it looks like you have gotten a hold of loomis and bridgman, is to sloooooooowwwwww way down. if you are familiar with playing guitar, you start out by learning scales. i try to think of each line as a note within a scale, and the best way to learn a scale is to take your time with each note and work your way to getting faster. if you do two full pages of the same head this way and you flip between the two pages you will notice a considerable difference between the two pages in terms of proportion and confidence.

The A.W.P is an automated weapons platform capable of traversing difficult terrain with ease, It has the mobility and durability to enter remote locations inaccessible or inhospitable to regular soldiers. Typically airlifted in the A.W.P. can be dropped from great heights due to the strength and design of the legs, allowing its transport to stay well of of the line of fire.
The A.W.P. can be equipped with a number of weapons but is typically fitted with a railgun for engaging long range targets.

Finally done! I meant to have this done about a week ago but a host of things kept getting in the way, I finally managed to devote a day to it yesterday to get the thing coloured up and finished!
The mech was modeled in MODO with some concepting done in Zbrush, renders where done in Keyshot with the matte painting and texture work all done in Photoshop. The model is composed mainly of pieces from my kit basing library along with a couple of modified pieces from Vitaly Bulgarovs black Phoenix project (http://www.bulgarov.com/) and some pieces custom built for this model. I've put it in the 2D catagory as I don't really consider it 3D, I just use the 3D as a way to get to my final image. If I have the time i may put together a look at my process which will probably go up in my sketchbook

I plan to do maybe another 2 variations to show what it would look like equipped with different weapons. Also If somebody is good with fonts I'd love some help. I like the style of the font I'm using at the moment but its very hard to read when it gets smaller

Some studies from today, feeling more confident about the planes of the face though I still need a lot of practice.

Trying out doodling my next robot for 3D, normally I just start in Zbrush as I cant draw. But you have to start sometime.

Hey guys, I haven't posted or updated anything properly in a couple of weeks and I just wanted to let people in on why.

I started feeling terrible a couple of weeks ago and was finding it really hard to practice or study. I went to get a check up and they found a benign tumor in my head.
As much as I wanted to I couldn't stay in the States like this and so I got back to NZ a couple of days ago. hopefully I can get it all sorted pretty soon as Im still not really able to draw or work over here. Sadly that means I wont be able update for a few weeks more as I'm not really able to do much!

The most depressing part is I've gone from the 25-30 degrees of LA to the wind, rain and all round poor weather of wellington. All going well I'll be back in the USA for the final term of the year in September, so Its not all bad!

Still not really up to working much so I dug up an old portrait so that I'm at least updating something!

If you now who this man is your as nerdy as me.
