Good decision on starting again and pursue your passion! I'll need to see more of your work before I can give proper critique though.

My old drawings have nothing to do with my current skills.

Now i'm reading "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards"
The first thing that I need is creating habit. I must drawing day by day and not stoping anymore.
Here is first exercise. Also heads from "Fun with pencil by Loomis"

Great start, Protsenko! Good to hear that you're planning to draw 'day by day and not stoping anymore'... I'm really looking forward to your future studies and sketches.

When I began to learn drawing, Harold Speed's 'The Practice and Science of Drawing' was a reliable companion for me. It's quite text-heavy and is probably not the best book for the fist few months if you're just restarted your journey. But it's a solid guide, you might check it out someday.

I also heard a lot of good things about Betty Edwards book, really looking forward to see your updates on that.

    Good luck and have fun!

    Hi Protsenko,

    I am surprised at why you did not want to continue your older thread, I actually enjoyed seeing the progress! I wouldn't have been able to say anything if I only read this thread as there isn't enough to say anything about ^^;

But judging from your old work, you have a very good hand at painting, you should try painting some more, especially for your characters. I think your character anatomy can use some work. Do you by chance draw a lot of guide before you draw characters? Perhaps some life drawing classes will do you good! I remember trying out that Betty Edwards book in university once haha! It was uhm...very interesting experience

    Have fun!

StephanDraws, yeah, right now I'll take this seriously. I'll look at this book in future. Thank u!

Saf~, Hello. I don't continue my older thread because it's demotivate me. You know, if i look at my last progress and where i stay now.. Crap. Now I have a problem with painting, anatomy and so on. Also, i'd never use any guides for drawing (except Loomis books). But I stand corrected. I'm going to start with a clean slate.

Other excercises from Edwards book (self-portrait, face from imagination and my broken hand)

Your old stuff is not bad at all! I don't understand why you're being so hard on yourself. Especially the still lifes were pretty good in both drawing and shading.

I think your main problem at the moment is construction; how to draw objects properly in a 3D space. You should focus on learning to draw simple geometric forms (cubes, sphere, cylinders) in perspective from imagination, starting with the cube. I know it sounds boring but believe me it will end a lot of your struggles!

In his book succesful drawing Loomis has an in depth explanation on construction. What really helped me to nail this was Glenn Vilppu's videos and manual.

I hope this helps and keep those drawings coming!

fantasyartist, Sometimes I'm too critical to myself. Sometimes I force myself too much. That's why I'm crashed my passion in the past. I promise! that i will work on construction after beginners books like Bert Dodson and Edwards. I know, that is so important thing and good for begining.

Today's excercises. Some pictures upside down. Inaccurately.

Hi. Why all the negativity?!!! You have what it takes, might as well enjoy the journey. Keep working, keep posting and you will do fine. Especially as you are doing lots of studies and reading the right sort of material. What do you like doing the best? and what do you hate the most? Try and balance your studies and subjects so you don't get too down. Good luck and if you get frustrated find something fun to draw / read / watch, and don't be so hard on yourself!

It is nice to see you are boosting your confidence and working with colours. Keep at it! I would try to refine your coloured pieces. Pick an object and try colouring it with higher detail Perhaps block them out with broader brushes and use finer ones for more details.

Looks like you've been working hard. One advice I can give you to progress faster is to not trying to tackle to many subjects at the same time. It would be better for you to focus on one subject at a time. Now you're struggling with drawing, lighting, composition and color at the same time. In my experience this leads to stagnation and frustration when studying.

Just like in school they break down the course and spread it the over the whole year,it would be wise to do the same when learning art. Sit down and write some (realistic) goals you would like to achieve with your art studies at the end of 2014. Then figure out what you'll have to study to achieve these goals and spread the subject matters over the course of this year, focusing on one subject at a time. This will allow you to focus your efforts and improve much faster. This is what I've been doing these last months and it's far less frustrating.

I hope this helps. Keep those drawings coming!

Keep up the studies, especially drawing from life. Focus on the fundamentals. You must train your eye to "see". As you begin to understand what you are seeing, you will be able to better translate it in drawing.

    Hello!
You have some good practices here!
My suggestion would be to learn what is to get the basic structure clear at first
so instead to skipping right to figure drawing (which is also helpful) but try and learn the bone structure/anatomy, it will help you understand/grasp what you see better.

other than that keep up the good work! you are making good progress!
