CHOW #348 :: The Sun Priest :: FINALS

    Character of the Week #348
    The Sun Priest

    Deadline - Sunday, March 23rd 10PM GMT

In this society, the sun is worshiped by the people. It is what provides warmth and comfort for those who live under it. The priests who follow the path of the Sun God are very passionate about their belief. They believe they are imbued with the fiery power of the sun and are known to show this in some of their rituals. They are dressed in robes which have the GOLDEN symbol of power, repeated throughout the design.

    The Guidelines:
    • Can be male or female
    • Must be humanoid
    • Must include the symbol of power in the design. This symbol is just a representation of the sun/sun god.
    • Background is optional this week

    The Rules
    • Finals must be posted in the finals thread before the deadline
    • Final post must include the CHoW # and the artists username at the bottom of the image within, at least, a footer bar(TYPED, NOT WRITTEN)
    • At least 3/4 of the character must be visible. No back views are allowed without a front please.
    • Sketches or rushed artwork will not be accepted into the poll
    • No photograph paint overs, must be 100% original work
    • At least two wips posted with your final in the finals thread
    • NO ENVIRONMENT BACKGROUNDS! You may use simple shapes, gradients or silhouettes
    • Please read through the thread for any posts made by the mod. They likely answered a question that was asked about the challenge!
    • Have fun!

    Source of Life and Light

My first participation here! I learned so much about how to digitally color, especially the gold - wow. Here my priestess is handing out the fire of the solstice to the commoners to take home and light up their households. This was so much fun! Good luck everyone!

I really like the ideas that were presented this time around, really creative. It was an excellent exercise, I feel like I improve so much each time I do one of these types of things

Just recently stumbled upon this site, already loving it!
It's always good fun creating character designs and with a forum like this it's pure awesomeness.
Hats off to all participants and a deep bow to the moderators.

The sun priest's sceptre is reversible,as the twilight hours are just as sacred as midday, sunlight at the top, and darkness represented at the bottom.
The censer is held at the correct height to correspond with the sun's movements across the sky.
His legs are also bound, so he can only walk at a measured and consistent pace around the cathedral grounds, just like the sun across the firmament.

The idea was to put middle oriental/bizantium flavour, because I was sure my priest would come very D&D cleric clichè. So, just for turn it a little, without going too far with my "realistic" interpretation. I'm not really happy with it, but deadlines must be respected.

"...The priests of the sun are subject to no man: they consult with kings, and pray with paupers, yet go in chains as slaves to the sun god. Each sunrise and sunset is cause for prayer, and each day they lay their skin bare to the elements to receive the touch of their deity..." from the travel journal of explorer Millas Miradon

hauntedtoupee- Do not put in more than one character unless stated by the brief. I can tell which one is supposed to be the priest, but next time wont fly.

Lakka - Your final doesn't show anything but a silhouette.
vezun - The design here doesn't quite fit the brief.
Gstar - invalid submission. No name or chow # on the bottom.

I also want to point out to those of you who are putting your name and Chow# at the top. Please keep it at the bottom, thanks.

And I`m sorry your comment here shows lack of basic manners.

The critique you recieved is valid - your piece is more of an illustration than actual character design. If you look at other entries you`ll notice each character is unique, be it through silhouette, colors, patterns etc. We all attempted to create something "fresh" and not seen before. Your character is a man (?) in a robe and a hood. TBH, there`s nothing of visual interest that would separate him from other characters if he was an NPC in a video game. Speaking from experience here, btw.
