    Uyeno's Sketchbook

-GO TO LAST PAGES FOR LATEST WORK-
    Hi everyone!
    My name is Dane
    Some stuff about me:
I'm a 15 year old artist (turning 16 in July) who has been drawing about everyday for almost a year and a half now.
I love watching animated films as well as making art.
Most of my sketches are imagination character sketches but I hope to do more life and anatomy studies as well as getting better at painting.
In at least 10 years I hope to be a freelance animator? Or concept artist or something?
    Feel free to critique me!
I don't really know what i'm doing so correct me if I do something wrong on here.
    Little bit of NSFW stuff
    Well lets do this

Wow at 15 you are already leaps ahead of me at 21 :o ! Looks like you really have a passion for creating your own characters, and a knack for learning. I really dig the sketchbook pages with all the faces. Keep it up and I believe you will achieve great things!

I really cant believe it. The amount of support and effort in art this site has to offer is amazing. I took a look at your sketchbook and all that effort... Wow. People are so strive to learn. I'm glad I joined this site and started my sketchbook so I could have this kind of interaction where you're able to communicate about art to people and the process of seeing everyone improve. I honestly don't do very much anatomy studies or life drawing but seeing the vibe everyone has makes me want to push myself into that direction. I really believe that there is no such thing as failure. Everything is an experiment, just a chance to try something new. Thank you for liking my stuff! Ill try to look back at your sketchbook every so often for inspiration ahah.

Wow I wish I could have been this good when I was 15. I'm happy to see young people starting so early! Your characters look interesting and I can tell that they got their own special personalities. You're gonna go far

That year and a half of drawings payed off then, your line works really good and confident. If you keep actively learning you'll keep getting good and fast, I cant wait to see your future posts.

Imagination stuff again. I was happy with the face but started to get frustrated with the tuxedo. Exhausted with painting. Going back to drawing.

Wow the last painting really capitalizes your style! Only thing i see is maybe the neck shape is a bit funny? Like it's a bit long or flat? Were you drawing from reference/life or imagination? Still, really developing something here.

@taylorqt- It was purely from imagination and thanks a lot! I feel I'm still going to go through a lot of change and experiments to make up my style. His neck does look a little funny and it does seem flat! I was stuck on how to make it pop out a little more.

nice! i am so glad that you don't believe in failure. there is no failure, there is only learning. that's the most important thing; you're good to go. i'm sure you'll carry on. i love your line and your slouch in the little beings, it's full of life.

as for critique, i noticed you still have trouble blending in digital art. it'd do you good to check out ctrlpaint.com and this thread: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/pho...ng-ps-2-a.html. do some studies of things in your room, or some black and white value studies of paintings you admire. if you're using photoshop, and use windows, you might want to try PaintTool Sai, it's much more soft-hearted to painting.
overall though, you're good. i am looking forward to seeing you grow.

edit: have you seen Tekkon Kinkreet? it's an incredible animated movie, everything from Studio 4C is amazing.

@owlies- Oh goodness how I love your comment~ Thank you so much! When I was first starting off at painting I think I watched all of Ctrlpaint's introduction to digital painting videos. I remembered how you should use the eyedropper tool to blend your stuff and from Sinix's Youtube videos I learned you should add as much HUE variation in your paintings as you can and that's what I tried to do with this one but I think I lost a lot of that HUE when trying to blend lol. I'll take a look at the thread and try to learn some new things! I notice that I do have a little bit of trouble at blending.

Studies of objects are like the one thing I don't do and I'v been starting to feel guilty ahah. I'll try your suggestions!
I think i'm really getting the hang of Photoshop atm like I'v been playing with the brush settings a lot and seeing the kind of brush that I like. I'll try Sai though sometime!

Films from Studio 4C, and Ghibli inspired me to become an artist a lot. At one point I began watching like 1 animated movie a week ahah. I LOVE Studio 4C's art but I think they lack in story? Lately I'v been hooked to the work of Koji Morimoto (he works for Studio 4C).His art style is so visually pleasing to me. Satoshi Kon is also one of my favorites!

I love your work! Your style is like the kind of style I love seeing and your'e only 18? Man what a real inspiration! Love the doodles, and love the life drawings. Keep it up!

    Hey, welcome.
I feel like we like a lot of the same things so I thought I would share some of my inspirations as well.
    Lesean Thomas: leseanthomas.deviantart.com/gallery/
    KSE: http://kse332.deviantart.com/
    Bahi JD: http://bahijd.tumblr.com/
Sinix, you probably already know him.
I really love looking at the storyboards of the first two artists, especially for the Boondocks.

I just started experimenting with this but i think doing some short animations would be a worthwhile exercise.

@-CA-Disciple- Man those are some extremely talented artists! Love the animation reel of Seung Eun and everything of Bahi JD! So beautiful. Thank you so much for the suggestions!! I wanna be just like them one day.
I always think about attempting animation but then I tell myself I'm too young and that I should express myself through practicing and drawing more in my sketchbook. Once in a while I'll do a story board in my sketchbook for an experiment. Even if the story is dumb I'm just experimenting right? Here's a dumb one I did sometime this year. :/

I think something clicked on my head on this page. After the 30 figure drawings I notice I was able to draw much more confidently and fast with quick lines, and be able to memorize the figure more clearly. This was from imagination.

More school sketches. *High school sketches. Imagination. I like that dude with the finger pointing up. SOOOO lately i'v been kinda slacking... sorta. I've been spending most of my time looking at the work of different animators and just trying to be inspired as well as stalking Bahi JD's tumblr. I need to draw more.

Your figures from imagination after everything "clicked" are pretty amazing! Keep it up. I like the muscular/skeleton drawing you did from imagination as well. The sort of messy style you have is so cool! I can definitely see the influence from animation.

@matt1926 Thanks a lot! Hey I hope you continue drawing for a long time dude! I know when I first started drawing I stumbled upon these videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQBpa8sVCAI
This guy has a bunch of sketchbook videos uploaded and what I used to do when I was starting out was I'd have a video open while I draw and I'd just get so inspired. I definitely recommend his videos. lol
ps: Alex had a huge inspiration on me for a long time. Spencer's sketchbook is also very inspiring!

    Hey Uyeno

Thought I'd check out your SB after you posted that great Deadpool sketch in the challenge thread You certainly have a great grasp of personality in your work - gives it life and character... which in my view is the most important element of any artwork! Great job *thumbs up* However, having looked through your work here, it strikes me that working on more finished pieces could be very helpful for you...

    Keep it up!

Great sketches. My only advice is, don't beat yourself up too much. I did that in high school, and wasted a lot of time in college just trying to feel better.

@the7artist7- Thanks a lot! Yeah I do need to do more finished pieces :/ I just don't feel too confident to start on them.
@eminkey2003- Oh gosh yeah I think I'v been sorta going overboard with drawing. I draw anytime I get the chance to.. lol all morning, at lunch, and sometimes at recess, and a lot in class when we're doing nothing important. I need to chill down yo! But I don't think it's bad to be drawing all day when your'e at home having nothing productive to be doing is it?

A sketch from imagination. So I had one of those "ah-ha!" moments today. I realized that my shoulders have always looked flat and 2-D. I tried adding a little perspective to it just a little bit from like an up view so it hid the neck. I think it kinda worked? Still looks off for some reason. If you know whats wrong a critique would be helpful! Ugh CA loads so slow for me. Is this normal?

Hey Uyeno,I'm loving the figures, why don't you join the Spartan Camp under the community activities tab, its 50 gestures a week although for an aspiring animator I think doing 50 gestures a day shouldn't be a problem.

For post #24 I think the problem is the head is pushed a bit too far back and shifted too far to the left

@-CA-Discipline- Thanks! MMN yeah I might. 50 gestures isn't a problem. Hey I saw your post of the break dancing animation practice under the thread! Was that from imagination or were you like studying a video or maybe photos? Seems like good practice! How do you go about timing and what fps to make it? Thanks for the critique. The head does look a little off.

Was not feeling it at all. Idk if writing "ENERGY" made the page have more energy.

Nice work as always Oyeno - keep at it and you're going to have a really engaging style... you already do but need to have more belief in yourself I think! Lets see some attempts at finished pieces in the style of that last page! Loose flowing and characterful - maybe background too - trees / sunlight / windy / mountains / steam punk hot air balloon... etc haha see! your style is kicking my creativity into action - I can see your characters animated in my mind's eye working some crazy contraption while fantastic creatures fly below... ok ok I'll stop!

    Keep rockin!
