    Ubem's Deliberate Practice

[7/27/2017] Thank you for checking out my sketchbook. I've been painting since I first posted here. But I just started to figure out how to learn, so I'm still quite the beginner. Any criticism or feedback would be amazing, and I hope to return the favor as well.

Nice stuff. Really dig the skulls from last year. The first 2 images are awesome too. Doing master studies is sure way too improve. I don't know but your pencil lines look way better to me than your digital. Please keep posting.

Punkhead: Thanks a lot man! I have tons of stuff I could upload, mostly studies from Levelup. Lol, the secret to the sketches line thickness, and using a red sanguine pencil (they're amazing)!

Hey thanks for stopping by my sketchbook!

I can't get over your master studies. Their all so well done, I would never have the confidence to try something like that. Also, your hair is kickass in those self portraits.

So far you've done very well with your studies. I'd like to see what you can do without reference now. My only advise on your works so far is to focus on the relationships and depth. You should get to the point you're getting to when your finished, then zoom in even further and refine the details and edges it's easy to stop and say you've done enough, so try to work on more detailed finishing.

AdaptableSimon: You're right, been working on non-reference pieces but I'm too ashamed to put them up yet LOL. Depth and atmosphere have been a big challenge, maybe my weakest area. Thanks again for the advice!!!

More recent imagination sketches. Really inspired by Joel's SB Progress! Decided to start painting and drawing for at least 4 hours a day.

Hi Ubem, very inspiring work you have here. Maybe you could tell more about your process studying from the pictures of old masters and etc..?

    (Answered on Raganosis Sketchbook) -

Thanks for stopping by my sketchbook, I'm so glad you're inspired!

My process is pretty basic: paint, self-critique, adjust, then repeat

Your study above looks spot on, it looks like you have copying accurately pretty well, especially if more time were devoted to it. If doing these start to feel too easy, I would recommend to challenge yourself, maybe more details, clearer edges, more accurate colors, spending more time, ect. Also I wouldn't be too concerned about the amount of time spent, focusing on the quality is much more useful when learning.

For example of a challenge, I've been pushing myself with the goal to create a better and more interesting picture than the master did. Sort of like standing on the shoulders of giants. This forces me to get into the mind of the master, figure out what forms and feelings they wanted to convey, and then build upon that. It also requires application of a deeper understanding of shadow, light, and color, instead of rote copying.

In the end, as long as you're challenging yourself and striving to make better pieces, one day I'll be doing master studies of your art!

    Hope this helps
    Ubem

Gray: Thanks dude! yea I can see what you mean. The horizon line I kept in mind is around the gun area, I supposed the density of the atmosphere would cut the foreground shorter than normal.
