    Sorien's Sketchbook

I guess this is a combination introduction and goals post to kick off my sketchbook.

I’m in my mid-thirties and have a decent career that has nothing to with art. I drew a bit in high school and started taking classes from “The Art Instruction Schools” (a correspondence art course – some of you may be familiar with) when I was 20 – I lasted 3 months.

I’ve recently reordered my priorities (early midlife crisis I suppose) and want my free time to count for something worthwhile besides the internet, videogames and TV. Hence my reintroduction to art.

I started mid-January going through my old books and stumbled upon Matt Kohr’s Ctrlpaint which was the match that really lit the fire. I’ve been at this about 2-3hours a day now for about a month and I can’t get enough, and see some improvement but don’t know where to focus first. Still Lifes? Lines, values…. there’s so much… I started Comp 1.1 here and while I enjoy it I feel like I’m jumping in the deep in there.

13Feb2014 - the picture on the right is my Bicycle Helmet and the goal was to "upgrade" it from imagination.

Still life from 18feb2014 - my proportions on the tin where way off. Drawing what I see from life is still a struggle. No to mention making my studies fit the page....

Hand Study. I'm trying to draw 1-2 hands daily here are a few of the "better" ones. Again I struggle with fitting the studies on the page.

2 studies - starting on value studies - My pipe and my keys. About an hour a piece - Using a 2H and a knead eraser. The Emblem on the bottle open gave me a lot a grief - and it was an afterthought - still my own fault. Overall I'm happy with my shading attempts and I like the way the brier-wood on the pipe came out.

Decided to try my hand at painting my pipe. Watched most of Sycra's foundation of light videos and need something to break up the monotony of hands and still life studies. I'm pretty pleased with it though I can see its not quite right in places.

    spent about 45min on it

Hey, great work starting and welcome to the site! It looks like you might be using the burn and dodge tool for your shading, try looking out how other paintings use colour in certain lights by using the photoshop colour picker. http://ctrlpaint.com/library/ has lots of great videos you might find useful.

Yeah I put the original sketch on an vivid-light layer, and darkened up the wood on with a hard light layer. Most of the shading came from the underlying sketch. with those layers. Would love to take it to that point without what i consider handcaps. And that is great link, I love his videos and teaching style.
