    Those small busts are fantastic - it would be awesome if you could upload some progress pics or similar. I can't fathom how you can start with nothing and end up with this. I'd love to see more.

    I'm glad you like them !

    I'm currently not a professionnal sculptor even if I will most probably switch to this kind of "carrier" next year ^^ . Client are small companies of historical or fantastic miniatures for painters and collectors.

    I post on my blog some kind of a step by step of a sculpture I did in 2012. I can copy paste the post here, both in french and english.

    Une fois n'est pas coutume, je vais poster un billet un peu plus long.
    J'espère que le petit pas à pas qui suit sera utile et pourra inspirer certain d'entre vous.
    J'ai commencé ce buste fin 2012, à l'occasion d'un petit salon de figurines fantastiques et historiques, le FIMAGE qui a lieu tous les ans à Antibes dans le sud de la France, au bord de la mer. Vous savez, ces petites conventions sans prétentions, avec un tas d'amis, détente quoi !
    Bref, je me souviens avoir feuilleté un magazine d'archéologie ou d'ethnologie sur les cultures incas et mayas, qu'avait apporté mon ami Allan Carasco. Je suis tombé sur quelques photos de sculptures impressionantes qui m'ont tout de suites faites rêver.

    Voici ces photos des statuettes antiques qui m'ont inspiré. Je n'ai pas cherché à recopier l'une ou l'autre, mais je me suis laissé porter par l'impression et l'ambiance qui m'ont marqué à ce moment là.

    I started this bust in late 2012, on the occasion of a small convention of fantastic and historical figures called " FIMAGE" which takes place every year in Antibes in the south of France.
    Anyway, I remember watching an archeology and ethnology magazine about Inca and Mayan cultures, that brought my friend Allan Carasco. I came across some pictures of impressive sculptures that made ​​me dream.

    Here are the pictures of ancient statues that inspired me. I have not tried to copy one or the other, but I let myself be carried away by the feeling and atmosphere that marked me at that time.

    1: La photo 1 illustre ce que j'avais pu réaliser au cours du salon, c'est à dire les volumes généraux de la tête.

    2: L'armature a été renforcée et pour gagner du volume j'ai entouré du papier journal et du fil de fer autour de la tige centrale.
    Le visage a été grandement affiné et est déja quasiment dans son état définitif. Je sais déja que le personnage aura de grande boucles d'oreille, que je place dès maintenant.


    2: The armature has been strengthened and in order to gain volume I circled newspaper and wire around the central wire.
    The face has been greatly refined and is almost in its final state. I know already that the character has large earrings, I roughly place them now.

    3: Ici j'ébauche le volume général du torse, ainsi que le début de la coiffe. Le gros du volume est réalisé en super sculpey firm ( rose ) car la pate est plus molle, ce qui facilite le travail.

    3: Here I outline the overall volume of the torso and the beginning of the cap. The biggest volume is made of softer clay ( super sculpey firm (pink)) , which facilitates the work.

    4: Le volume du torse et de la coiffe sont affinés, ainsi que la découpe du buste.
    Le torse est volontairement massif, j'ai envie que le personnage soit imposant et mystique.
    Le visage est également recouvert de scarifications géométriques dont on peut voir l'inspiration sur les photos de références.


    4: The volume of the torso and of the cap are refined, and the cutting of the bust.
    The torso is intentionnaly wide and big, I want the character to be imposing and mystical.
    The face is also covered with geometric scarifications.

    5: Le travail de texture et de détaillage à proprement parler commence ici. J'ai en tête une coiffe faites de petites baguette de bois laquées et colorées.
    Elle sont ici réalisées en collant de petit bouts de fil de fer cotes à cotes.
    La toge est texturée avec du green stuff, je veux donner l'impression d'un tissus très rèche et naturel.


    5: The texture work and detailing itself starts here. I have in mind a headdress made ​​of small painted and stained wood rods.

    sorry for the dumb question, but are you not firing it? Or are you firing it with the beads and such attached as well? It's hard to tell if it is even baked or not...

    Hi Stoneseeker,

    I usually fire the sculpure once eveything is finished, like on this one. But it depends of the complexity of the sculpture. Sometime it's easier to fire a finished part of the model before to continue .
