    I have not done a self portrait in about 15 years.

    I used acrylic paints for this.

    I learnt that whatever part of the face you are looking at seems more exagerated as you study it so i was constantly having to tone down the conrast of light and shadow as I progressed. In other words i would be looking under the right eye (the one in shadow ) and see more contrast in the shadow but standing back and looking as a whole i could see it was to bold compared to the whole piece. I thinkit would help if i choose a main focal point eg, right eye or nose or something.

    I also noticed that the folds on the forehead had thin lines of light at the top which was interesting and something i had never observed.

    Hey, lookin' good. Love the lively application of the paint. It looks like the mass shadow on your forehead could use a tough more variation, maybe with a darker value.

    I know what you mean about the exaggeration issue. I'm trying to remember to make sure and take time look at the "whole picture" when I start working on detail.

    i used ultramarine and burnt umber to achive the black and white colour rather than using plain boring black. i hope this is ok.

    nice observation. I did not notice that but looking at the picture what you say makes sence, I might have another go at some point.

    that's fine. just be sure that your values are right. Some of the values look less observed than others, as has been pointed out. nice mood though...that's always the challenging part to nail down and you are getting that just fine.

    I spent two hours on this so it needs another hour to make 3. so i will work on the values. after that is the assignment done and i move on to colour and light 1.2 or do i do more self portraits for this assignment untill you tell me i can move on?

    Hello
    I did this one over a month ago but gave up on it as it does not look like me and i couldnt remedy it. Havent had chance to fix it. But just showing this is an update of progress. I have alot less facial hair now so will paint a real self portrait for this exercise when i can

    could i use biro too ?

    Ah, W!L, I just love these colorful under-paintings you use. It just gives it something special and works well with the energy of your paint application. The gaze and mood you've captured are very engaging. As for critique, I think the left nostril got a little muddled out.

    Let's see a Biro one too!

    Yes I was thinking of doing a ball point pen one (ha!)

    Thanks for the kind words. I hate this portrait so much and got really frustrated with it. It looks nothing like me compared to my first.

    The gaze and mood was me getting more and more pissed off with it.

    I have just bought some oil paints so might have a go with them

    looking forward to the updates in oil. when working in oils keep your shadows transparent and thin and in the light use thicker paint. if you start by painting the shadows and midtones first, the lighter value paint can sit on top of it and the thickness will help bounce light off the surface, where the transparent shadows will allow light into the paint. you can use linseed or marogers or liquin to thin down the darks prior to applying them.

    nice work will! real oil huh?
    hmm.. I do think that bringing down the contrast shouldn't mean you just stay further away from the black and white. you should use those somewhere... to pop. also, the left chin/cheek starts running into each other near the end. it was fine in your initial sketch, so I guess you just need to get that lining back. keep it up! nice wild expression!

    check out zorn, sargent, rembrandt, and velasquez...and hals...to see which directions brush strokes can flow over the forms. this has been worked out for hundreds of years and will help your pieces read to follow those same directional strokes.

    keep up the good work. definitely check out the brush strokes that happen in the portraits by the artists above.
