CHOW #345 :: Powerhouse Technician of a Lost Civilization :: FINALS

    Character of the Week #345
Powerhouse Technician of a Lost Civilization

    Deadline - Sunday, February 9th 10PM GMT

This week, we are doing a crossover with Industrial Design of the Week. You do not have to participate in both categories, though we suggest you do.

Long ago there was an ancient civilization which had in incredibly advanced technology which surpasses anything known at this time. They were a very secluded people, not trusting those outside of their culture with their knowledge, as they feared that it would be misused for destruction. They had the capability to used water to produce and power their society. Technicians who ran this powerhouse and provide maintenance on the network wore water repellent uniforms, imbued with an ability to sense stability changes in the water, and provide clues to potentially disastrous situations. Any dangers were highlighted by blue, glowing symbols on the suits.

    The Guidelines:
    • Can be male or female
    • Race is Human..
    • The clothing must have the blue glowing symbols
    • If you participate in BOTH ChoW and IDOW, then submit BOTH images into BOTH final threads.
    • Backgrounds ARE ACCEPTABLE this time around!!! Please read the breif in IDOW for more details.

    The Rules
    • Finals must be posted in the finals thread before the deadline
    • Final post must include the CHoW number and the artists username at the bottom of the image
    • At least 3/4 of the character must be visible
    • Sketches or rushed artwork will not be accepted into the poll
    • No photograph paint overs, must be 100% original work
    • At least two wips posted with your final in the finals thread
    • NO ENVIRONMENT BACKGROUNDS! You may use simple shapes, gradients or silhouettes
    • Have fun!

Hmmm I won't have time to do justice to the IDOW part of this so I'm going to call it a day.

I'll admit, my technician is really kinda pushing the idea a bit... I latched on to the idea that their technology might be so advanced it would seem like magic to us and I wanted this civilisation to feel like it had very different values from our own i.e. less heavy tech/science feel. The most free spirited people I could think of are the Mongolians so I looked there for style and while I was at it I decided to use the 'water bending' idea from Avatar (because I'd just finished watching them all - and was just totally gob smacked at the greatness!)

Anyhow I had a lot of fun so here's my entry and good luck to everyone!

Here's what I got. I ended up having to rush it, and I'm sad I don't have time to render all his gear and explain what it does, how it works, what he does every day, what my thought process was with him, or even finish up the rendering of him from behind, detailing the rest of his gear. I guess thats what I get for starting a week late. Whatever, now I know what not to do next time!

EDIT: Why is there a giant fourth attached image showing up? It says here I only have three different attachments on this post? How do I get rid of that thing?

^^ it was a great round! but indeed too bad about the idw. there's only 3 entries now, and im kind of worried if they'll all be allowed. but that deadline is just for today, so it's open a few more hours right? might be more coming in!

    A couple people were cut.

Ashess- Your name was written, not typed.

pheonix561- This doesn't really fit the criteria of a uniform.

My vote goes to ded and and lovingit.

I really like the personality in ded´s character, very playful. The lighting is very solid and shows the blue glowing symbols very well.

The entire concept of lovingit is very well thought out and executed. Very cool to read all about how this civilization works. Awesome job

havock, it's done, and so I wont clog the thread with this further just because I am upset. but you will have to admit, that it's weird to have the rules at the start of the thread, only to have a second list of rules tucked away in a secret location.

EDIT- okay, I still say it's silly to have a check-list of rules in the thread and have a different rule set tucked away. but being the obedient little twerp I went an re-read the rules at your suggestion, Havok. thing is, there is nothing in them about having to type your user name. it's not even in the guidelines. ( which arent even rules but okay)

Quote Originally Posted by Eofn View Post
THE RULES FOR GETTING TO POLL
The rules are really, REALLY straightforward and most of them take a matter of seconds to implement. There are 7 Golden Rules, but if a submission does not meet them, it will not be entered into the poll.

    RULE ONE: FOLLOW THE TOPIC.
If the challenge is to design a robot space monkey sent back to the victorian era then it's no good if you create a Japanese Bunny Warrior. Stick to the brief and make the design clear.

RULE TWO: SHOW AT LEAST ¾ OF YOUR DESIGN.
CHoW is a CHARACTER DESIGN challenge! If not enough of the character is visible then it will fail. ¾ is roughly Top of the head to the knees, although it's best to play it safe and show the whole character.

Head designs, Busts and half torsos are fine to help develop the character, but they will not be accepted into the poll.

RULE THREE: POST YOUR FINAL IN THE FINALS THREAD BEFORE THE DEADLINE.
The finals thread is posted every Friday and is clearly named and the deadline is usually Sunday at 10:00PM GMT+1. If the final concept is NOT posted in that thread BEFORE the deadline is up OR when a mod closes for submissions, then it will not even be considered for the poll. Any changes to the submission time or day will be clearly marked!

RULE FOUR: CHARACTER DESIGN MUST BE CLEAR.
Again, CHoW is a character design challenge and the emphasis is therefore on the quality of the character! How the character is presented is entirely up to the artist unless the brief states otherwise. If the mods do not think that enough thought or research has gone into a design, it will not make the poll.

    RULE FIVE: NO ENVIRONMENT BACKGROUNDS!
ChoW is about character design, not illustration. The focus of these challenges is to make a clear and well executed design on a character. People spend too much time on placing a character in an environment than working on the actual design. You may, however, use simple shapes, gradients, or silhouettes for a background. Nothing more.

RULE SIX: PLACE THE IMAGE IN A FRAME WITH YOUR NAME/TOPIC.
I hate having to cut people from the poll because of this, but it is such a simple rule, that if you cannot even follow this, you aren't ready for a studio position!

Skipping any of these rules means you will NOT make it into the poll.

I don't see anything in the rules about typed labeling. As a matter of presentation typed is more 'professional', but it seems a bit arbitrary as grounds for rejection from the poll. The example in the rules is typed, but it also has a continuous black border. Is that also a rule? My favorite this round, the entry by Ded, doesn't have a continuous black border. I guess I just feel that it discourages participation to be so punitive.

    My portfolio

Would you like to see my drawr-rings?

Will design for food, provided that we all agree that money is edible.

Nice entries guys! alphaRat's one is my favorite, somehow it reminds me of pottery art which is awesome, and his power-plant idea is very creative, good job. And Ded, dayum man, that's a nice piece! Love the lighting. Too bad the site didn't let me post my entry, I had a lot of issues this past week, 404 errors, constant log-outs, attachment limits... Anyways, I'll post it somewhere one of these days lol

@ashes: Too bad you were cut man, you did a great work. I think Havoc was referring to this thread. It would be nice if he could add that to the main rules thread to avoid these kind of misunderstandings in the future.

My vote goes to Ded and lovingit - to Ded for the character, because I love his shape, and to lovingit for the overall well thinked concept, I really like the technology idea.

For ashess : too bad you were cut, I think I wouldn't have noticed the error either !

Okay, so the rules have been better clarified. I kept forgetting to fix them because they are in a separate thread and not exactly glaring me in the eye. I don't have a personal vendetta against anyone nor is it a pet peeve, its purely for legibility's sake. I apologize for neglecting this issue for so long. I had made previous posts about it, just kept forgetting to update everything. I get very wrapped up in my life and I can't be here as much as I would like. I just want you all to know that I enjoy hosting the topics and seeing everyone create. I just want to remind you that I will make mistakes and, again, apologize for them. I DO care and I try my best.

Now, moving on. The next topic seems to be quite popular, so check it out if you haven't yet.

havok, it happens. sorry I got upset. I'd like to participate again in the future and I'm making the effort to remember to type.

voted for letrakmo and loving it.. because those felt like nice, roundly finished works.

ps, havok, I think I speak for everyone when I say we really do appreciate the effort you put into this challenge. if it seems differently t's just because I got caught up it a little too much.
