    Hi. I'm Will.

I've been lead character artist for a few indie games over the course of about 4 years. I've no traditional schooling in art and feel that it would definitely help me to create an awesome portfolio and possibly land a better job, and be able to just create better work in general.

I'm a big fan of sci fi/fantasy art both 2D and 3D and would like to strive to meet that same quality in my work.

Thanks for the course and making affordable.

    Hello everyone, I'm James.

I used to draw when I was a kid and I have always had a great appreciation for the arts but I have never put any serious effort into improving myself as an artist. Recently I decided to pour time and effort into learning the fundamentals and I have been watching Youtube tutorials in efforts to school myself. I watched an interview with someone referencing this website and all the improvement they experienced as a result of using this the website and the forums so I decided I would sign up. I wish everyone the best and I look forward to sharing my art which will be a completely new experience for me.

    Thanks for reading

    Hello everyone

I'm Ruth, 25, from Germany. Recently, I finished my masters degree in International Cultural and Business Studies. As I have always dreamt of becoming a freelance illustrator, I decided not to jump into a dead end career and instead take the chance to find my way into the arts... The plan is to dedicate this year to building the foundations and learning all the skills I'll need. Level Up seems perfect for this journey so I'm really looking forward to studying and progressing with you guys!

    Hi!

    I'm Sergio, I'm 31 and I live in Spain.

I have been interested in drawing & painting all my life but there have been big periods of innactivity, lack of motivation was part of the problem. I have been shy all my life, and never liked showing my works. This have impacted negatively in my progress. But it's never too late to change things.

This is going to be a year of big changes in my life (good ones I think), and I'm going to have lots of free time, so I have decided to put it to good use and boost my skills.

    Let's do this!

Hi all, I'm Katryna. Most people call me Kat.

I've participated in the conceptart.org community on and off through the years, mostly because I get easily discouraged without direction, assignments, and deadlines. I've just recently moved to New Hampshire where I have a ton of moral support from my friends, so I decided this would be the best time to push towards honing my artistic skills.

My problem with learning is that I am too judgemental on myself and feel like I have to be to be able to progress. I know this is wrong, empirically, because I have become very successful in an entirely different art form: fractal art. I basically started practicing and it was fun the whole way through because I loved everything I did once I got past the initial "I hate everything" hump. I'm not entirely sure what makes the difference for drawing, but I haven't been able to switch that off yet. I'm hoping to get past the hump with this workshop.

Some of my fractal art for reference. I know if I can just get to where I can stand to practice I will really enjoy drawing/painting, just like I enjoy fractal art.

Heeeeey! I'm "mannyhaatz" (Ehem Devan in real life) and I have been studying art seriously (independently) since October 2012. I am 21 years old and I am using the levelup program as my grand finale through my mediocrity; once I complete all 4 stages, hopefully I will become a paid professional artist in the industry.

I am currently working full-time at a shit-fastfood joint in the ghetto.

I was heavily involved with the study group at the forums on crimsondaggers.com, but decided to continue the rest of my journey here (quite fitting considering I began it on conceptart.org when I was 15)
Yesterday was the first time I used drugs (like, the bad stuff) and I overdosed on lsd. I wanted to escape the stress in my life and ended up in the hospital for 2days. Time to start fresh.

Here is my final attempt at leaving that life behind me and coming out on the other side of the volcano. Goddamn...lets get it.

Suggestion: Member art as "flashcards" for easier critiquing

https://www.memrise.com/ -> each new term is written on a "flashcard". Taking a similar approach to member-art might encourage more people to critique each other's art.

    Implementation:
A framed piece of art is shown in a non-obstructive fashion. A textbox below the piece has tips on how to constructively critique the piece in transparent text, which fades once the user starts typing. The user decides how much in depth he wishes to go. Clicking "Send" or "Critique" will post the message to the forum and a new artpiece pops up.

Suggestion: Give the user a reward for a well-written piece of critique, such as points and make the experience of giving critique like playing a game.

Hey all, I'm Joey and I've been drawing on and off since I was a little kid. I'm 21 at the time of writing this, and I am in the final stages of getting my associates, and from there potentially transferring to uni.
Currently I'm working part time while finishing community, and pursuing off every chance I can get in my off time. I am taking this year to really work hard with my art and see where it can take me. I am 99% self trained so a class like this is really exciting for me. There is so much I want to do with my art, from concept art, to illustration, to animation, and even to comic books. I am so excited for LevelUp! to be apart of my journey.
Some of my favorite artists are, Luke Mancini, Ian McQue, Jake Wyatt, Dave Rapoza, N.C. Wyeth and sooo many more.
Anyways, cant wait to get to know some of you guys and help each other along this journey.

    Hey guys!

My name is Susan, I'm 21, and have been drawing since I was three years old. I'm a recent college graduate with only an AAS degree in Computer Science with a Web Design focus, but I've admitted to myself that deep down it's not what I truly want to be doing. I've always had a natural talent for art and am all mostly self taught save for two or so classes in high school, so I think I should take my career where my real talent and joy has always been.

I've yet to get a real job or hardly done much freelance to say I've even done it all. It might seem like a bit silly but I hope to one day work for a game company like Riot or Blizzard. At this point just working with others with the same creative drive for art would be great. Or even having people to talk to about art! So that's why I'm here!

I really feel like this is the right step now in my current journey I've been taking around for my self-art-studies recently, and I know I'll learn something great from this.

Thank you all for having me. c:

    Hi everyone!

My name is Damian. I'm a 34 year old programmer from Yorkshire, UK.

I used to draw daily as a child and into my teens but as I got older I focused more on science pursuits and forgot mostly about art. I have followed CA.org and the digital art community as a whole from the sidelines though, lurking and admiring for many years and have often found myself wanting to get back into art. Meanwhile, I gained a masters degree in computer science specialising in graphics programming, and this only deepened my appreciation for art in general and game art in particular. Unfortunately, every time I try to draw something myself it's unbearably painful due to my lack of skill in putting down what I see or what's in my head, and my overbearing perfectionism that wants it to be brilliant first try. This results in frustration and abandoning work, often not trying again until the desire to paint overcomes me once more and the cycle starts again.

Finally, I have come to the decision that I want to make a serious effort to improve my skills, making digital art my main hobby and refusing to give up. I don't need to ever make a living from it, I just want the ability to express myself properly through the medium of digital paint, or to create decent concept art for my own projects. I have joined the LevelUp programme in the hopes that having a clear path in front of me with set goals will drive me to improvement, and I look forward to getting to know some of the great people here in this wonderful community

Hi guys, I am a graphic designer from Brazil. Got a bachelor degree in visual art long time ago, have been painting a little the last years but I always struggle with digital painting. I want to become a professional character designer. I will do my best to improve my art skills. I am super excited here. I hope things go a level up for me.

Hi my name is Jeremy Bayley am from Vancouver Canada. Recently graduated arts school in the area of environment design. They taught us a whole range of things from technical CG tools such as Maya, Photoshop, After Effects, zbrush... etc. As well as artistic skills like colour, composition, drawing/ life drawing. After two years however I feel that its not enough. There was so much focus on technical skills and not enough time to put into artistic development. Dont get me wrong, the teachers and students were great but the difficulty's of life kept a mental block from achieving the maximum. Near the end of the course I started to do life drawing independently and finally after so much time I was doing full value digital paintings that Im not embarrassed to share. That little bit of time at the end I saw a light at the end of the tunnel and knew that things had to change. This was a huge turn around for me as just two and a half years ago I had not done any drawing at all, just programming and technical CG stuff. Sketchbooks are now my greatest companion.

I have changed my lifestyle from the people im around to the environments I function in to dedicate myself to environment design and drawing/painting/sculpting. I am very excited to enter conceptart.org which I have for a long time admired from a distance. My main outcome goals for this is to not only become better at the technical aspects of painting but also unlock my 2D creativity and rebuild my portfolio so I can more confidently confront the computer games and movie industry. I firmly belive that through developing a solid base in concept art all my work even the 3D and sculpture will be vastly improved with compelling designs and tasteful colour pallets.

Currently I am just squeaking by with a job as a house painter, I like the job but I cant see it as a life long thing. Every day I think of doing what I love as an Environment Designer and I find the hard labour of a trade job great motivation for pushing through. I am tired coming home after hard work but it is merely a small bump to step over at the end of the day.

Hello Fellow Art Lovers, my name is Oyo89ify and I hope, like everyone here, to improve my humble skills. I registered quite a while ago, but I've been lost as to where to begin. Under the tutelage of Mr. Manley, I will get somewhere.

Hello! My name is David Borba am I'm from Brazil. I'm 30 years old, have a bachelor in Graphic Design and some years of experience working as a 3D generalist. Drawing and painting is relative new to me, especially traditional media, because I've been working only with 3D and never really have the endurance to learn to draw. So, now I'm completing almost 3 years of studies, first I took a 2 years illustration course in Brazil and now I'm finishing one year of academic drawing and painting in Italy.

Looking forward to keep learning, now in the digital painting world! Glad to be here!

Hi, I am Angie. I am 34 year-old military veteran, got my MBA (which I never use), and currently work as an air traffic controller in Colorado. I have a terrible sense of humor and that is more in the sewer than the gutter and my personality type is INTJ.

I have been drawing since I was old enough to pick up a crayon, but never had any formal schooling where art is involved. The biggest complaint I consistently receive on my work is that I need to study the basics, but my work schedule has not permitted me to do so (rotating shift work in a 24/7 facility makes it near impossible to study or socialize). I will likely not be able to make a career of art (I get paid too well to yell at pilots and trainees), but I would love to improve for my own sake.

I am pleased to be here and I look forward to learning with everyone!

Hello, my name is Kevin Miller and I am an architect. I recently took up learning to oil paint 6 months ago and wanted to support that with some additional training. My thinking is that I may want to work in both digital and traditional formats as I develop my skills in drawing and painting. Not sure where it will take me but that is part of the excitement in pursuing this venture.....

Greetings all. My name is Teresa. Like many I've been drawing since I was little. I did the whole school thing. I couldn't afford to go Ringling like I wanted to so I just went with the digital art program at a state University. Turns out the state University had no idea how to train their students. I kid you not, there is a professor at this school that loves to regale his students with the story of an alumnus who graduated from the digital art programs only to become an expert at brushing the teeth of dogs. It's not only that , there were constant murmurs behind close doors about the school graduating ill-prepared students with little to no skills and a shoddy portfolio if any at all.

Unfortunately I am no exception. While I don't brush dogs' teeth, not that there's anything wrong with that, I'm just getting by as a cashier at a grocery. I pretty much have no skills to speak of other than what little I had coming into the university. I guess the cheap comes out expensive. I should've use the 25K in debt I racked up over there anyway and put it into Ringling or the Art Institute or something.

My family wants me to give the whole school thing another go but do nursing instead but after wasting 6 years of my life in post secondary school I had enough. Besides, it just hurts to much to give up. Nowadays, I use whatever little money I have left to teach myself art. I hope after going through this level up program I can take my middling ability as an artist to maybe something approaching professional level.

Ok, that's enough rambling. Nice to meet y'all. Let's all improve together ^_^

Whoa. That looks spiffy. I'm not sure how one does fractal art but I think the process is the same for all art. Once one get over the self-conscious feeling of stumbling around drawing/painting stops being so torturous..

    Howdy howdy,

I'm Jason, I'm 31 and a recent art school graduate and also a current graphic design student. The art school education I received was less focussed on technical skills and more geared on conceptual skills so even though my major was in drawing, we basically did all kinds of things while being formed into wanky intellectuals. So I'm hoping to strengthen my technical ability.

Wow, there's a good group here! Hello all, I'm Mary. I finally decided to take art seriously two years ago by enrolling in art school, and then decided to take my future seriously by dropping out. Despite the time and money (so, so much money) spent on improving my skills I was moving at a snail's pace. I've only dipped my toes in, but so far Level Up looks like where I belong!

Hey guys. I'm Aaron from Malaysia. Nice to see quite a few fellow 21 year olds joining this time! I've been drawing since I was a child, sketching for the most part. I drew largely in Western cartoon style until later in my teens until now where they've been more manga-inspired. I went to art college for a year before dropping out due to location problems, so I'm going for Level Up to improve my skills. Nice to meet you all and hope we can help and bond during this time!

    Hi all,

My name is Sune and I am really looking forward to this "class". I currently work full-time within the design industry, but rarely get to illustrate. I have craved to get started doing so for a long time and now I just really look forward to putting some late night hours into this.

I have a master in Design, but while studying and working I never got the chance, time and motivation to really study the craft of drawing and painting. Hope this will be it!

Nice to see a lot of people here.

    Hey guys,

I'm John, 22, from England. I am an aspiring Digital artist, looking to ultimately work in the video games industry with additional interest in being a freelance illustrator. I have no fundamental training so am hoping joining this will improve on that! I'm a support worker currently but my ultimate goal is to get out and be an artist full time.

    Hi there,

I'm Anushka and I'm a graphic designer and, at times, illustrator. I'm also interested in 3D art and I am currently working on character design on Zbrush for an amateur film. I'm always willing to learn new things and my goal is to improve my artistic skills, esp. when it comes to drawing/painting, which are my great passion.
Really looking forward to get started

    Hi everyone,

My name is Adam and I am a soon-to-be college graduate majoring in Game Design.

Ever since high school I wanted to learn how to be an artist and create video games. Over time, however, the college I went to for my Bachelors hasn't taught me so much about art that I've wanted to learn. I've tried different workshops and tutorials over the years and constantly tried to re-invent myself, but it was to no avail because of a serious lack of self-confidence. Once again my art skills have diminished, and I am very out of touch with my creative side right now. I hope to use this website and for the first time participate in a community with other artists so that I can be motivated to build up and excel in my art skills once and for all.

Glad to be with you all.

    Hi!

I'm Toni. I'm 22 and I don't have any drawing experience. I'm 1 year from graduating on IT college but my plan is to work as a 3d artist, I really like video games and animation so I decided to learn 2d art and advance on 3d. This will be a long journey and I decided to start with CA.com. I'm really looking forward and meeting new people because every help is very appreciated.
