    My Sketchbook (fullmontis)

Hello everyone! I'm Andrea from Italy. I want to improve my art, and hope to do so in the course of the next few years.

My main motivation is being able to be able to paint from imagination easily. I always had some really out there dreams and I always wanted to put some landscape on paper, but never had the skill to do so. Since I'm a visual person I thought that learning how to draw would be a useful skill to add to my skillset anyway, so I started working on my art about a couple of months ago.

I've now discovered this wonderful website, I have to admit I feel a little intimidated by the skills of some of you. Hope I will learn a lot from you guys!

My plan is to work on some drawings every day for at least one hour, and at least 10 hours weekly. I will post here my sketches for feedback.

I attached a few recent drawings I did recently to show a little my current skill level. A portrait of Scarlett Johansson, a lineart I did for a character and two landscapes I did from imagination (both inspired from dreams).

I guess that's enough for now.

A few pencil sketches of poses I did yesterday. Here I was mainly trying to get a feel for shapes in 3D from imagination, something that I'm really struggling with.

Self portrait done wit the tablet, took about 1 hour and half. Not really happy with it, my brush strokes suck and I have some problem in recognizing shapes. Oh well. It was also the first time I did a self portrait with a mirror, my neck started aching for all the turning

You're off with a good start my friend, you seem to have a good understanding of values - I'm jealous here
I'd suggest continuing with the self portraits and trying to nail the big shape first and understand it as much as you can. If you can, try doing those basic studies with geometrical shapes with light cast upon them.

Thank you for the encouragement Kerah!

I tried doing some more self protraits but I didn't feel in the mood for it, so instead I decided to do some still life. Working with simple shapes is a lot less stressing and more satisfying, I guess I should do them more. Faces are more interesting but a lot harder to render.

The text on the ball alone took me 10 minutes, I found it quite hard because I had to project it on a sphere which is something that I have a hard time doing. Came out ok, I guess.

Two more paintings, one is a study of an apple, I was trying to get the values and colors right but I think I didn't get the shadows right.

The other one is "something" I dreamed of tonight. Sort of a robot, I guess. This made me realize I need to do some studies on clothes since I've never really tried drawing them. Also i realized I need to add more interesting light and colours in the paintings since it seems kinda dull.

Also I need to resize those images a bit cause they seem to clutter the thread a little too much

Another portrait I did today, I wasn't very focused so the result is kinda weird.

I'm also buying a new sketchbook today for pencil drawing.

New album! Here are some random sketches, with some value and shapes studies.

Here are a few more value studies and a still life. here I'm trying to think in terms of shadows only to force myself to see the shapes more than the values themselves.

Another self portrait. Here I'm trying to think more in term of surfaces and volumes, it was kinda hard but I feel it shows the shapes better. Also, I noticed that I tend to work on low contrast for some reason, I need to add lighter lights and darker shadows.

Cool stuff here! great mix between studies and imagination, always try to complement one with the other. Like with the weird robot thing (wich looks awesome), do a study of metal, do a study of clothes and try to do the piece again. If you do this with everything you do (and
I´m a hypocrite, I should do this way more often) You´ll get to a professional level in no time

Thank you for the suggestions stinkypanda! I will do some more detailed studies soon.

Another portrait. Here again I'm trying to seem ore the surfaces more than the values themselves. It was very hard but I learned a lot.

Here are a few studies of noses and mouths, something that I never approached in detail.

Another portrait. I noticed that when painting digitally I tend to focus too much on details, losing focus of the global painting
that ends up looking fucked. Also I didn't realize how crazy my hair was until I finished it.

Here are some 30 second poses I did a couple days ago, mixed with something from imagination. Sorry for the quality but my scanner refused to work today.

Yesterday didn't draw anything, that's a shame I'll catch up today.

Two portraits from screenshots of movies, these are from "The best offer". About 40 minutes each. This time around I decided to do like in traditional painting and not focus on details at all, keeping the canvas always the same size. I found it helped me a lot to keep focus on the global image, avoiding the picasso effect.

Added some faces in the mix. These suck pretty badly, I really need to practice more.

A quick value study I did a few days back.

I'm slacking off these last few days, doing only some doodles. I'm losing my focus on my studies, need to get back on track!
