SPACEMAN Sketchbook - Pentel, Painting, Comic work, Illustration

I am a drifter. I need to be more consistent. I put down illustration / concept art for a couple of years and have been focusing on design, writing and music. Creativity...It's a journey of faith for me.

I recently came back alive to art. It all started wit the below painting. It was done for a charity and really set me on fire again:

    loomis

    I forgot to say!

Piemonster: thanks very much, I love inking. I am working as a graphic designer at the moment, but have always loved illustration and have illustrated a published childrens book and kids comic.

TNiznet: thanks very much, I am glad you enjoyed the fox... I love character design and he is my favourite so far.

I have been studying Andrew Loomis' book - drawing faces and hands. Its very good. Below are some studies I've done, not nessacarily very well done, but this is a process book right?

Woah your work from ref is great! Especially the ones with brush pen, LOVING THEM!

Try and do loads of imagination stuff. I find that after an hour of small sketches and stuff, I'm completely out of ideas. If I push myself to keep drawing from imagination after that I come up with the things I like the most.

Keep at it man, you're definitely doing great!!

Hi, thanks for the comments and looking at my work.

Your stuff is really cool, your characters tell great stories with there gestures and your ink work is fantastic. Have you seen Atoms for peace website? Or any artwork from Radioheads music? I'd love to see you do an animated music video or something.

    more studies

    - Othrandir, thanks for the encouragement. Yeah, I need to get in the habit of doing smaller sketches and keeping loose at the rough stage. I need to keep pushing myself, like you do. I really love working with the brush pen, but it takes time, and its hard to be loose... though some people are able to be quite loose with ink it never reaslly works out for me. Thats why I am trying to work in pencil while I keep developing the foundations of drawing in my SB. However, I hope to do a lot of work in ink in the future!
    - Dayle, I hadn't seen Atoms for Peace's website, but its pretty cool. Radiohead cover is classic. I don't know if I have the patience to get into animation... but I do see what you mean. Thanks for the words of encouragement, helps!

Below are a few studies I did over the weekend.

It's great you're doing some studies, but don't be afraid of using guidelines in your work. The proportions in your faces are a bit off at times, especially the relationship between the eyes and the noses. (the nose is too long in some of the drawings, mainly the portaits) You don't seem to have the same problem with your profiles. I have the same struggle as you, but the other way around, I still have some struggles with profiles

Super nice stuff so far! Your use of contrast with ink is wonderful, I just recently started using brushpen and it's a wonderful thing. When you do pieces other than with pen, it seems your work stiffens up somewhat(Post #8, your ink work vs. the pencil work). I believe you would be able to loosen it up by doing gestures and figure drawing with different mediums. You've got a fantastic energy with your pen stuff, I'd love to see that transferred to your other work as well!

    guidelines

nichey: thanks for the critique, you are right. I always struggle with proportions between eyes and nose, and making the eyes look kind of alike.... I have taken your advice into account... I am studying different ways of constructing the head and it has help already... I must endeavor to continue to strengthen the guidelines beneath my work and correct basic structural issues in the form. And shoot, you are right! My noses are generally way too long.

Spelledeg: Thanks for that encouragement! I do love working in ink... I have felt recently I needed to get back to foundational studies after talking to a few illustrator friends. Hence all the pencil and pen drawings... however I will try to loosen up. It might take me a while. Thanks for the pointers!

Dina2342: thanks for that, I really enjoyed the spirit fox. You can read the whole story here:
http://www.simonjfletcher.com/i/inde...he-spirit-fox/ or Here for the Tapestry version.

What I have recently realised, which I wish I had realised when I was a bit younger, careful study really helps drawing... I am the kind of person who rushes on from one thing to the next. I think I need to slow down a bit. Here are some recent drawings, I think the studies have been helping. Thanks for the comments guys, it really helps!

Wow, great stuff in here. Love the book and the brushpen drawings. You handle them really well. I'd echo what Nichey said about the structural drawing, but it seems you're already well underway doing that.

I hear you , you have nice illustrations, looks there's a lot more potential.

Those Pentels are really nice, I've seen people creating awesome stuff with those. I bought the same last year but other than a few studies, haven't done much with them.

Those mini value study portraits are fantastic. Great draftsmanship! Agreed, lots of potential here!

    Slow progress, but progress nonetheless...

Hello Sybo. What a fun sketchbook you have! A treat. There is just something about your drawings that are really engaging. . . can't quite put my finger on it. . . but I'm getting really good vibes from them.
