    TheWalkingBar's sketchbook (Danny)

    Hello strangers!
Hi, my name is not actually TheWalkingBar, it's Danny.
I've wanted to start a sketchbook on CA for quite a while now. I'm 16 (19 now) btw.
Any and all critiques are welcome. Oh and I'm new to this so if anybody has any advice about the posts or something please feel free to share.
    That's all..

It's another bird. It has a mustache. Yeah... Sorry for uploading mostly 1 thing at a time but I can't really take pictures of my traditional stuff since there's a storm outside and it's pretty dark.

Ok the first one is pretty bad overall: the idea is not original, the composition isn't all that interesting and nothing really pops out to me. But in my defense it was early and kind of a warm up

This one (the second one) is not really much and I don't think I should even post it. I was playing lol and in between games drew this from reference. At about 50% it looked good to me, but near the end I kind of over did it with colors and it got muddy. That's how I see it. Also the black part, whateverit'scalled, looks pretty bad.

Ok here is a skull study. This dragged out way more than it had to. In the end it kinda lost what I liked about it, but it wasn't necessarily good anyways.

Here are some sketches I did today. Sorry in advance for the quality and also some the colors and proportions were distorted.

This was my first daily spitpaint drawing. Took 30 minutes obv. and really I think this is as much as I can do for such time at this point.

I don't know why I'm uploading this at all. By the way if anyone sees this and is into animes, I just started watching samurai champloo and it's amazing. The art and style is great and it's what probably inspired the sketch.

This emoticon has sunglass, I had to

3 of those are for the daily spitpaint group. Ended up submiting the horse. The other thing is for Sinix's design lab and I guess it's either gunslinger or hunter princess.

Hey there Bar. You have some nice brushwork happening here. I think you have a decent sense for edge contrast. I think my main suggestion at the moment would be to study values. That's a big part of what's missing in your imagination work which can tend to look a little washed out and lacking in contrast. You could do a bunch of black and white studies before moving into color since any color can work as long as the underlying values are correct.

    Keep working and posting though

Thanks for the advice man! Now that you pointed it out I'm starting to notice a pattern in my stuff (a pretty bad one).
Here is a value painting I started the moment I read your reply. It's not finished yet, 'cuz it's 1 am here, but I will finish it tomorrow! Again thanks a lot!

This is as far as I'll go with this one. It's getting painful and I doubt I can do work more on it. Onto the next value study!

    Amazed

I watched Shaddy Safadi's videos. Gonna watch them again tomorrow and the day after that because they are just that good. I can't recommend this guy enough, even though all of you guys have probably seen the vids. Btw I know that I haven't really used the thing with the bright colors, but I will probably try it tomorow.

This took so much time, but I feel it wasn't enough, If I could I would have gone for 1-2 hours more at least, but I've got stuff to carve for school. Started watching The wire. It all makes sense now!

This was pretty quick actually. Really wanted to draw something from imagination, but I have to get some sleep so this is pretty simple. I'm pretty happy with this, even thou it's pretty boring and simple, because I used only a brush, no techniques seen from other people. Still heavily inspired though.
Edit: Oh and the green border just looks cool. Nothing I can do about it.

    Fun! Fun!

Started a sketch in my sketchbook, took a picture and basically did nothing with it. Kinda gave up on it and decided to just gave fun. In the end it was pretty fun to do.

Ty man, I'll try to update as often as I can. I mostly spend time drawing and often forget to upload, but I can always try.
By the way I'm also called Jordan!
Now about these: pretty distorted but I like them. The quality is pretty bad.

wow it looks like you've improved a lot in a very short time your shading is a lot nicer than it used to be. do you use different types of pencils (B and H types), or have you tried them to see what sort of effects you can achieve?

    Thanks Rosemont,
I don't really get the question, but whatever. When I start sketching/drawing/shading with pencil I mostly do it in with one pencil. 90% of the times I have only 2b so yea. These are colored pencils thou so I can't give much info.
''have you tried them to see what sort of effects you can achieve?'' - Don't get the question.

    Onward

Today a friend of mine brought Bridgeman's book in school and since I was just thinking about figure drawing, I decided to sketch from it. I did a LOT more sketches, the others got smudged. I'm trying to get the idea without copying too much, so the style is [I]kinda[I] different. And also they might look kinda weird because of photoshop's auto-tone.

Here is something from class. Kinda distorted in places and the colors basically got muted because of the bad picture.
Should have pushed the background back, because it causes the whole thing to look flat.

I just meant you can increase contrast or get various different effects from using harder and softer pencils in pieces, instead of just using one my original comment wasn't directed so much at the coloured sketches (which were really nice) but just your overall work. I like your lines in the gestures you drew

    Stuff

Ah! Ty for the tip, Rosemont, I'm just too lazy to do that stuff and also, I believe that with cross-hatching you don't really need much because you can just build hatches up (is that a thing?). In fact I have some recent stuff with crosshatching that I feel have decent contrast/values with one pencil. I'm really lazy/I need sleep now, so maybe I'll upload them tomorrow.
So for now I'll upload just this one image. It's completely from imagination. Not all that original, but I like it.

    Bad day, but whatever

I couldn't make myself upload the traditional stuff. Maybe tomorrow. *sigh*
I was watching True detective today and there were a few beautiful shots of big fields. Later I tried to recall the essence without drawing the exact same fields. So it's from imagination, but it was inspired by those shots.
I know I should vary what I draw, but these are just relaxing. Tomorrow, though, I'm either gonna draw people only or nothing at all.
The idea behind this was to draw something simple, so that I could focus on depth and scale.

    Pharrell Williams is awesome.

Haven't uploaded in a while.. I've been trying to get landscapes in my system, meaning I've been out collecting information, I've been drawing a lot, not for quality, but for variety, to build up my visual memory/library. I still can't get myself to upload the traditional drawing portraits and stuff.. eventually.
These here are from today. I've noticed for quite a while now that my stuff lacks in color.

    Great day

An unfinished cast study. I started 2 digital things today and this is one of them. Both are value based and both are unfinished. Hopefully I'll finish at least one of em tomorrow and post it along with some of my rl sketchbook sketches.

Why is finishing digital stuff so hard?... Anyways, the cast value study is to be left unfinished.
This is a portrait from school, but I think the picture loses a big part of what the drawing really is(due to smudged hatching).
Afterwards, just some sketches. And btw the upper ship was inspired by Zedig.

    Fun fun fun

Hi, great day right? Well whatever, yesterday I bought an A3 format sketchbook and I'm using every opportunity to draw portraits. Quick ones, but portraits nonetheless. I try to figure things out as I go, so these first ''quick portrait'' posts are gonna be messy. I like them though! Problem is EVERYTHING gets distorted when taking a pic and I hate it. I made a watercolor painting in the sketchbook as well to test how well it's gonna hold out and to my surprise it's pretty flawless (the paper). About the watercolor itself - I really like it, but I can't take a good picture of it, so I'm not even gonna bother uploading it. Sorry for the long descriptions...
