    Destination: Nirvana.

    Hi people

Well, I'm starting a new sketchbook. The old one was too disorganized and I wasn't paying much attention to it. Thank you, everyone who helped me there!

So... Hi again =) My name's Junior, I'm 25 years old... I live in Brazil and my long term goals are to work as a concept artist and character designer for games and animation and, later on, run my own animation studio.

My style is cartoony by nature. I love all the cartoonish styles - from european comics to 2d and 3d animation, but right now I'm studying real life as well to improve my skills.
Destination: Nirvana is how I decided to call my journey to be a better artist and person cause I have a lot of problems with energy, discipline, focus and other things that are in my way to becoming a better artist, and I'm working on these things step by step. So it's not just about art - it's about myself as a whole person.
I think the name is perfect for it cause, from what I understand, in Buddhism nirvana is not a place, but a state of mind.
I'm studying a little of everything: color theory, composition, anatomy, perspective, values and so on - all I can get my hands on really.
If I'm to say what my influences are at this moment, it's the art of Bobby chiu and Sam Nielson and the backgrounds of the Ghibli Movies.

So I need your help, people... critiques, feedback and maybe words of motivation, why not?
    It will be very welcome.

That's it. Thanks for your time and let's make some art!

    Just for Thread thumbnail purposes
    Destination: Nirvana.

PS: Thanks Fer with the help

Fer - My better half Thanks, please do, I appreciate it ^^

    Well, more stuff
    Gesture drawings from photos:

    ....

Some pages from my "sketchbook". Yes, it's a notebook, but I don't like to draw on my sketchbooks (without lines), I don't know exactly why but I think it's because I loved to draw on my notebooks in the classes when I was at the highschool. by the way, drawing was all I ever did in school

Some compositions studies from landscape photos:

Here I did some life gesture drawings when I was at the park:

Some cartoon body practice (I've been studying how anatomy is "modeled" on 3d animation films):

    That's it
    Thank you ^^

Staal Sander- Thank you so much for the visit and comments

Well, These are the last painting practices I've done, a lot of crap to be honest (and I know you can see this for yourselves), but there's no another way to get where I want if not trying and trying, right?

Oh, also, I'm very excited to start on START So much to learn there. If you didn't see that yet, I recommend you to take a look at that asap, sounds very very interesting.

    So...the stuff:
    Some crap from imagination:
    Name: 7.jpg
Views: 1216
Size: 78.2 KB

A try on rendering skintone.. I was trying to do something similar to Sam Nielson skin color...I failed as you can see:
    Name: 8.jpg
Views: 1308
Size: 125.1 KB

And on this one I tried two different approaches...
Here I start with greytones, like on that Bobby Chiu's tutorial I posted before:
    Name: 9.jpg
Views: 1107
Size: 63.0 KB
And here I started directly on colors:
    Name: 10.jpg
Views: 1127
Size: 56.8 KB
(I don't finished any of these, but I think this is enough to see what I've done isn't working yet.

    ............
I don't know exactly what I was trying to do on this one, I just did =P directly on color:
    Name: 11.jpg
Views: 1124
Size: 96.7 KB

This is a old sketch I decided to paint, starting directly on colors.. I need to finish it to see how it will look:
    Name: 12.jpg
Views: 1121
Size: 159.6 KB

That's it for now, I hope you can give me some critiques.

    Thank you so much

    Heya,

My point would related to studying anatomy. most of your "realisticish" sketches seem to have some flaws regarding shadows and so on. mainly studying the muscles and bones, and where they touch the skin could be a great help on this part.

I do NEED to say that your other work is just AMAZING. those cartoony styled (love em) worms and "pigish" bug creatures, are insane. at specially number 2.jpg. woha!

Edit: And those ?pen? enviro's are inspirational as well.

I just love the landscapes you did in #3! For some reason they remind me of Winnie the Pooh landscapes. Haha.

I can totally understand why someone would like drawing on lined paper. Much easier for measuring and such. But, I still don't recommend it! Haha, but whatever works for you! That's the great thing about art!

In #7, I see what you mean. But, honestly, I think that the color on grey looks best. The highlights really come out real well. I also think the colors have more personality when they're painted over the grey. (I am going to have to watch that tutorial! I have it open in a tab...)

I have to agree with Vi!! That thread is very inspirational! It was actually the first thread I came across last Jan. (2013) when I started here!

Love your sketchbook! Can't wait to see more! Have a great day!

yo! Some pretty good stuff here. I'm going to agree with Vi L.
Your rendering commonly has sort of a really soft sort of...3D model texture to it? And I think that comes from a little trouble with understanding shadow. It makes a lot of your stuff look sort of clay like. I would recommend some studies just blocking in colors and shadows with flats, or getting them a little harder. And maybe take some time to round out your studies, now and then? I get that this is a sketchbook, but taking something to a more finished result can still be helpful for A. your understanding of how stuff works and B. your viewers' understanding of where you're at! That way we can provide better crit. :3

More figure studies are definitely in order. You have some nice gesture sketches, but I'd say warm up with those, and the move into reaaaally getting some detailed figure drawings or paintings done. I think those would provide a better foundation for things like trying out the skintone textures and whatnot. You also expressed some frustration with the green monster paint in post #3? I don't know if that's been addressed, but I think my crit for it would again be trouble with the shadows. You have him mostly dark, with some very hard directional highlights, but the tree and the background don't provide any context for the lighting, and you also left it a bit flat on his backside. A little soft bounced light on the edge of an object in shadow can help to round it out, or so I've been told.
