SOW sculpture of the week! Alien John Doe WIP thread

    Greetings all!

As a new member and interested party I asked about a sculpting challenge following the format of the COW, CHOW, and other challenges...finding none but finding interest, we are starting an informal one and see what happens!

Due to the nature of sculpting, the "of the week" aspect will come in three stages for a total 3 week challenge. The idea would be for the challenge to end and then recover, find a new subject, and start again at the end of the forth week. So in a best case situation, 12 challenges a year.

The basics are the same as the other forum challenges.

    1. a new and original design
    2. any sculpting process (3D, clay, resin, found item, etc.)
    3. follow the desired and specified format and subject profile
    4. complete sculpture within the three week allowance

    Sculpting challenge format and profile

A bust with the minimum of a complete head, neck, portion of back/chest/shoulders as is the common with most busts. This is a minimum. If desired the sculptor may include more arm, waist, etc.. But the idea is to provide a sculpture with no more than a waist up view.

Size is relative but the most common is a 6"-8" sculpture mounted on a spindle or other base.

The sculpt subject is an alien version of an average guy (or it). A John Doe. A regular guy that has a mundane job, a few podlings at home, etc. Just an average citizen of the galactic community, the guy next door.

The challenge starts 26 Jan 2014 and end midnight 15 Feb 2014.

Week one...minimum input of design sketches
Week two...minimum input of base sculpt
Week three...finished sculpt if not finished earlier

Anyone is welcome to enter, even if coming into it later through the process.

Good luck to everyone who has committed and let the clay fly!

Ok here is my initial sketch.

Going for a shop keeper or store attendant or related customer service type.

Trying to attach some casual emotion to it, that helpful smile sort of thing

I am sure once I get going the natural lines and curves will find their own way and modify as needed.

There is something a bit screwy with the forum here since the transfer, double posting.

    Weird.

Hopefully this is not a symptom of something worse to come.

Here's my initial sketch. Trying to sort some ideas out in my head, but this is the gist of it. Average office supply clerk. Going to refine the sketch some more tonight.

    Love the idea.

www.findphil.com for a look at my older stuff
    www.facebook.com/vig.illustrationgraphics for recent stuff
http://velikan.tumblr.com/ for the latest up-to-the-minute stuff, and process nonsense
And finally, http://www.here-there-be-monsters.net/ is the place to be if you want to buy some of my work that has been kitted by the talented hand of Dave.

I'm still trying to work on my 2D skills, so I attempted to flesh this out a bit. I know it's not great, but it's practice. Got my base all set-up too. Gonna block-in major shapes next.

    Looks good so far!

A fun consideration is that in a different color you gain instant recognition factor, which is always nice

I blocked out the armature the other day and covered it in sculpey. Not sure if I did it correctly but then again I guess there is no "correct" way. Nothin' to it but to do it.

Going to get the major forms right, bake, then add detail.
