    P.O.W.! Challenge 75 - Work for Freedom

    P.O.W.! Challenge 75 - Work for Freedom

In all P.O.W.! Challenges, you can interpret the art any way you wish, and the more creatively, the better. Any media. B&W or Color, unless we specifically point out otherwise.

    Topic 75A: Work

    Topic 75B: Freedom

One or Both-Deadline: Sunday, February 23rd, 2013, 11:59 pm anywhere in the world.

You can present your solution as a minimum of TWO pages to any practical maximum you wish. Previously, we encouraged standard comic book pages, but it's beyond time to broaden the challenge in P.O.W.! Your pages can be any format, but make sure they line up to the same specs for each page.

Standard comic specs are below...and, yes, you can have the first or last (or both) as a splash page if you want--just don't get TOO extreme on page counts.

REMEMBER: You don't have to have a complete comic to qualify for polling--if you realize you're running out of time, try to get at least TWO pages finished by the deadline. That's all you need to qualify for polling..

Standard Comic Book Size: (a guideline, not a rule)

    --Trim size: 6 5/8" x 10 1/4"
    --Live art area: 6" x 9"
    --Bleed size before trimming: 6 7/8" x 10 1/2" (1/8" in all directions)

    .................................................. .............................

    Good luck.

To all of you who have supported the P.O.W.! Challenges, from the bottom of my heart I thank you. Cheers you guys. P.O.W.! People are the best people.

Just a reminder--those of you who didn't get a chance to finish exactly the way you wanted to, or ran into deadline problems, remember there is a sticky section where you can post your stuff when you do get it up to speed.

I think that people seem to respond the best to one word open-ended topics? I'm looking for feedback on this one, you guys. Better these than anything that funnels the topic down in any particular direction? Or should there be one open and one more directed?

Also, note the slightly longer run time. CA is moving servers this weekend, I think, so I'll let it run for a bit in case we end up offline.

i like the format we have now. I'd also like too bring back the other categories. like maybe have just a cover option or the character development drawings for people who maybe don't have enough time.... or just to lazy (like myself) to make panels. hahaha

The double topics lead to good free association, although the first thing that crossed my mind about this one was "Arbeit macht frei" which could lead to some rather socio-politically charged panels. If I submit something for this the jailers would be some space creepies or Skynet instead of humans just to make sure I'm not wallowing in mistakes from the past.

    Work

    Hi, P.O.W.!

We can post thumbnails here, no? I sketched these at work last night. Having gone to see the Art Spiegelman Retrospective last week has left me inspired .

    Hey everyone!

    NickyBeats
    - nice work! I like the build-up, and anticipation quite a bit! You have a strong sense of staging and story-telling in these pages!

I have one thing to note, if I may. Ages ago, I had it recommended to me that, if I wanted to stack panels vertically, only do so on the right side of the page, if the reader is meant to read left-to-right, top to bottom. If I were to stack two smaller panels on the left, with a larger panel on the right, the reader may become confused as to whether to let their eyes travel across or down. This happened to me when reading your first page... I read "Clang" to "Boom" at first, missing the "Bang" panel in the lower left corner.. But that may just be me... When I went back and re-read, I realized how nice that build-up flowed, I'd just skipped a beat the first time around.

Here's where I'm at, at this point, with my "Work" piece. Can you believe that it represents a couple of hours of work already?
I hope I get to finish it all by the due date! I'm excited about the last page .

I have been lurking around this forum for a while now, hoping for some activity. I for one am eagerly awaiting a new topic. Didn't have the nerve to demand one, as unlike you I have been a poor contributor to this section

    So +1 for new topic.

Hey fellow P.O.W.er's. I spent for year's of my life(well more than that now) lurking here. im not sure what's been happening here Everytime i log on. i feel like some one has taken my home and remodeled it without me having any say what so ever....But eventually i'll work past that haha er...
    ANYWAY'S

If you really want a new challenge. Do what i did and start posting them yourself (actually i dont think any one actually particapated in that one hehe) OR contact DONALFALL and ask him if he's still deputized (the mod). and or maybe he wants to pass the torch. nickybeats seems to be the most vigil about keeping up with P.O.W these day's talk to a mod....find out what the deal is. Oddley enough i now go to school full time....and work and trying to start small buiseness....but despite this hideously white backround ill try to stick around for the next two weeks until school starts again..... maybe email donalfall or something....

I guess what i'm saying is if all else fail's we promote from within...untill somebody with wieght tells us otherwise....

Maybe prepare comics for the "Non-competitive Comics" section to show that there continues to be interest in this activity.

I guess we could just post our own challenges..? Wouldn't be the same thing, but if it is the challenge of a deadline we want, that can be fixed.

That being said, I'd love to see some life going back here. I could use the challenge.

@ arttorny that sound like a good idea..for people with finished work... but i think the allure of this place (p.o.w) is that it's some what a group activity so if we all have a topic or guideline i think people would be more apt to join in and start something new.
@Eldinga we CAN start a new thread thats what ive been saying but theres no one too poll it. which in a sense make it NON-competive which i guess would be fine exept as arttorney pionted out we have that section.....
@nickybeats i hear you on the "time" thing i was really hoping you'd take it......(as in volunteer)

WHAT IF.......we post a new thread and hopefully someone will either return to do the polling or someone will volounteer......anyone i'll check back in a week?!!!! what say you fellow P.O.Wers?

All right! I have low level mod powers because I am helping with IDW while PixieTrick is away. I can do something here, but the changing of the rounds can't be on Sunday (because that is when the work happens for IDW).

The reason I didn't say something before is because I didn't want to step on any toes.

Please let's try to get three or four contestants per round so it shows we are not just wasting time. Give me time to think up a topic that gives an intriguing amount of freedom of expression. (Maybe some time tomorrow). I'll put it for a month so everybody has adequate time to prepare the pages.

    Fair 'nuf?

The new round is at http://www.conceptart.org/forums/sho...nts-or-Chthulu
Don't ask me a lot of questions about "Can we draw Chthulu as a good guy?" or "Just how giant is giant?" because I don't care. Just draw at least two pages of panels. All the losers who can't manage two pages in a month will have to bow down to you.
