Kalis de Vals' Sketchbook
Hi everyone, my name is Kalis de Vals.
I've always been interested in art and pursued it as a hobby, but lack fundamentals.
Here I'm hopefully taking the first step in getting serious about my fundamentals and learning to become a good artist.
So I'll post my daily studies!
I hope to get better mainly at color and environment/landscape painting. I embrace all criticism!

Hey man, good start! Putting some effort in, make sure and keep that up! Your construction is getting there, but for the portrait it's looking a little too soft and blurry, just work on your edge control and you'll get some nice results! Keep it up and don't let me down

Today since I am home now I'm going to work on my weak point, landscapes
Just trifled with this for over 45 minutes. The problem is I have no idea what I'm doing, someone please help X_X

Liking what I see so far! Keep it up! For your environments I'd highly recommend creating studies of some master paintings, also anything from the Hudson River school of painting is also great. Also get outside and do some plein air painting (I still need to do this myself!). I'm trying to improve my environments as well at the moment, and those are the best tips I've picked up. Mainly from the artist Noah Bradley, check his work out if you haven't already. For your portraits, I'd recommend trying to add some more contrast against the background. If you look at portraits by masters like Rembrandt you'll notice they have a dark background to contrast the face. At the moment the portrait of the bald guy above is kind of blending into the background, try to contrast you're hues/values to make the face stand out more.Hope that helps!

Sketches from on sight today and one digital.
I'm really trying to improve my environment stuff, I'm really bad at it and would love some tips and criticism for drawing locations from life.

Man... you're no beginner at all! Your work is really good and deciding to study the fundamentals is one hell of a great choice. I wish you good luck!
Btw the updated portrait is looking great, can't wait to see how it turns out.
Shoulder to the wheel, my friend!
My sketchbook - Harsh critique always welcome!

@Dina2342 Thanks a lot, that really means a lot.
Update on this slightly but I think I learned enough from it, also got a bunch more sketches but my camera phone is acting up, so will update later.

Ah those digital plein airs are getting populair. They both look good, you put a very nice atmosphere in your paintings. Maybe making them more detailed will make them pop some more.
Yeah I am trying to get back into drawing and such as well. XD

Hey guys, wednesday is perspective day on my schedule, so some beginner stuff with Scott Robertson's amazing book!
Some multiplication and mirrowing in 2 point perspective, then got onto tiled/inclined planes which as you can see I had a hard time with!
Not much here but with all the head scratching and erasing, it's about 2 hours worth of work!
Finally got it in the end, then celebrated with reversed perspective on an archeway! Hurray!
C&C very, very welcome for this weak point of mine!
And here's a simple form..
started learning how shadows work today too!

Hey guys, today is anatomy day so I decided to start working on something I'm very, very weak with, a common problems for beginners like myself; hands! Spent an hour or so reading Drawings Heads and Hands by Andrew Loomis then started drawing my own hands! Still very weak but I feel like I'm learning something every day, which makes me so happy! Rounded it off with a random doodle from imagination.
Thanks for looking as always!
Also more ball;

Landscape today, so tried a more complex landscape and failed dramatically..
I find if I can't easily split the color intensities up, I just don't know where to start. I still feel totally lost with landscapes, as sometimes they work and other times they don't..
Would love some guidance! Will do more as the day goes on but gave up quickly with this when I realized it wasn't working.. Thanks!

Working on monday's still life today, first one in a loonng while. Easing myself into this schedule!
My metal water bottle on my desk. Metal is very difficult! Didn't have the first clue with how it would work, but I think I learned something from this!
Crits would be mighty appreciated
