TOPIC: The Pastures of Valhalla
suggested by monkeybread
as in the fields/land surrounding the halls of Valhalla.
1. Design an environment that adheres to the topic/theme.
2. You must post at least once in this W.I.P. thread to be included in the finals thread for the voting poll.
Deadline: January 25, 2013
(If the site is down for maintenance then entries will be due when the website is back up and running. I will give enough time for people to trickle back on.)
Congrats to Artanas for winning EOW #221!
Post your final entries in the 'FINAL BURNING' thread which I will be posting about a week or so from the deadline. If you need more time to get your finals in, let me know and I'll extend the deadline. Good luck!

I love this idea.
Hopefully I'll be able to participate.
Are we talking about this?
In Norse mythology, Fólkvangr (Old Norse "field of the host" or "people-field" or "army-field") is a meadow or field ruled over by the goddess Freyja where half of those that die in combat go upon death, while the other half go to the god Odin in Valhalla
So Folkvangr is another location. Think more of the landscape around Valhalla itself. In Norse mythology, Valhalla (from Old Norse Valhöll "hall of the slain") is a majestic, enormous hall located in Asgard, ruled over by the god Odin. Chosen by Odin, half of those who die in combat travel to Valhalla upon death, led by valkyries, while the other half go to the goddess Freyja's field Fólkvangr. In Valhalla, the dead join the masses of those who have died in combat known as Einherjar, as well as various legendary Germanic heroes and kings, as they prepare to aid Odin during the events of Ragnarök. Before the hall stands the golden tree Glasir, and the hall's ceiling is thatched with golden shields. Various creatures live around Valhalla, such as the stag Eikþyrnir and the goat Heiðrún, both described as standing atop Valhalla and consuming the foliage of the tree Læraðr.

Swift composition with basic colour and lighting.
I'll be developing this further once I've sorted out all of them perspective issues and thought of some extra elements for inclusion.

First time in actually participating in one of these and sticking with it, always tried to do one of these challenges and never managed to keep up with it. Anyway, here is my WIP that I have at the moment, will probably do a few more before I pick a composition I like.
Hi, first time here, though I've been participating in the teen challengge for some time now, liked this topic so here I am.
Work so far:
All input welcome, I mean to improve.
Have a look at my sketchbook:
I'm loving yours, Kvenh (crabbie!). I'd be stoked to see more work on it!
Here's my sketch
WIP, gonna make the building more grand
Here's my wip. Arial view of the pastuer, falls, and a few structures, might add the Hall/castle way back behind the falls. what do you think?
figured its gotta be more pasture and less valhalla
Jodali, so many great thumbnails, Really liking the middle and bottom ones on the left.
This is an early WIP, I'll work on this tonight, I'm going to play on the concept that the fields of Valhalla are sown with the swords of the fallen... But I haven't drawn any of the swords yet.
Here is my WIP for my final. Not really well versed in digital environment painting :c Oh well I'll continue on and see if I get anywhere with it. Crits welcome.
Monkabit - The first thing I do when I set out to draw something is google image search, try looking up pictures of the alps, scottish highlands or New Zealand. Look at the way that the landscape rolls and winds, melt water runs off the frozen mountains, carving out valleys and canyons, layers of mountains overlap each other and the distant ranges are less saturated, becoming blue with atmospheric perspective. You can't show depth without overlapping elements.
My philosophy is always to observe, understand, then draw.
I hope that made sense Good luck, and keep at it.
I put a couple hours into this and i think it's pretty much done.
Any critiques before I submit my final?
