    character art mini-dumpage

Hey guys, these are some odds and ends I thought I would put together and post.

this was just a little pin-up painting I did...

this was the cover to gamepro magazine a couple months ago....its actually from a scan and came out with some faint artifacting....I sort of like the grainy look it gives it though...if it's driving you nuts just blur your eyes a bit. =) The actual cover is quite different, but this was the intended image before the edits, which I prefer.

Something I did over lunch hour...

back to work...any comments, fire away.

Love the bright colors on the first one. I like the nice negative shapes made by the locks of hair and the tattered sash.
I would like to see a little more local color on the flesh tones. I can see you put some red on the nose and cheeks and a little green on the arms, but I could see putting a little red on the fingers and a little purple here or there, as well.

    Nice Frazetta-ish piece, too.

I like your work. Your skin tones could use more colors but hey I'm a drunk/bored college student .

But yeah thanks for sharing, post more.

Good stuff, i enjoy the black and white the most, because i´m a sucker for that kind of style. The "fight-club" one is really great too, well done, keep posting.

    Great stuff as always

It is always worth it to open a thread started by you. Impressive. What really stood out for me was how you handled the muscles on the arm. The last piece of your I saw was the Machineflesh. In that the muscles had that comic hero zero body fat feel and you mentioned you were working on it. Looks like you nailed it.
Not really a critic but an observation. In the 1st & 3rd illos the dark values seem to fall along the same composition. How do you place your light source? Does it just come down to experince?

anyhoo thanks for the great images

Really nice work Blackarts, as always. i have a question, how long does it take you to paint something like that pin-up painting.

    Thanks, keep posting

no skillz; these were all done in Painter 7.

emily g; you're probably right, I could push those local colors a bit more. I always try to err on the side of less color though, or it looks like makeup....I'll work on this. I like your idea about the purple.

J May; what up John...let's see some new art!

R_M; thanks a lot, I feel I made some strides....still lots to work on though. I guess that's the coolest thing about painting/art...you never stop learning things.

Kryaus; Lighting-wise I usually pick a strong, slightly overhead light....I think because a lot of my art ends up as 3D models it works because it helps show the form off a lot. It's really fun using a strong light source in the black and white's because you get interesting balck shadow shapes. The danger of course is that all your work has the same lighting...so I try to vary it now and then and throw things in to break it up. Experience does help....if you are having trouble lighting things, a good tip Ryan Church has is to look at scrap metal on a sunny day, and draw that....you'll start to learn really quickly how shadows are cast and fall across surfaces.

    thanks!

That's some impressive stuff man! My fav is the first one, but one thing I noticed on it, is the guy's sword, I don't know if it's the same object sticking out on his left side and on his right side. If it is, it doesnt look straight, or if it's intentional, then it seems to be curved in a weird way.

Im not sure if you understand what Im talking about, but its ok though, your paintings rock!

DRESDEN; I did that one in between other things, so it's hard to say...I would estimate it took about 8-9 hours all together.

demeter_luna; thanks! His sword is supposed to have a curve to it..I think the problem is that the end is catching light, but it should be in shadow..that would push it back and make it appear straighter.
