    Sir-Cam and his Sketchbook

No clever SB names, unfortunately. I'm just not quite that awesome.
I've been meaning to make one of these, but I wasn't sure what to post first. Now I've realized it doesn't really matter, so I'm going to post the misc practice stuff I do. Well, that's pretty much what everyone else does as well. So nothing new here.

For now, I don't have much to post. But now the Sketchbook is here, and I can post things at my leisure.

Hey, welcome! Some solid figures, I really favor the structural approach too (where you divide the body into bits and then you move them around).
p.s - I have a simply name for my sketchbook too, although I had some attempts at creating something more catchy before. Simplicity in an oversaturated world can be nice, at least for my eyes

The legs are pretty off as I can tell. And some of the muscles in the mid-section connecting the man to the horse are off.
But I thought I'd post it anyways.

I have some new stuff to show. I've gotten into pencil sketches lately, but I don't think I'm going to show them much on this sketchbook, because I don't have a scanner and the image quality really suffers.

I did most of these sketches a while ago, I've just been forgetting to take pictures of them during the daytime, and I wanted the lighting to be as decent as possible.

First, some 30-second gesture drawings. Mostly unfinished because I haven't learned to do gesture drawings effectively yet.

Some 10-30 minute figure drawings. I don't do these very often, and it shows.

A knight sketch I thought was interesting.

And the last is a landscape sketch I did, which was my introduction to using a pencil in the last month.

A portrait from imagination. I think my forms might be starting to show? I'm not really sure, this all feels a bit pointless thus far.

You have some cool stuff in here Cam! I think the last imaginative portrait is pretty good, but then again, I'm not an expert at those things (or anything art-related for that matter ). The centaur sketch you posted a while back is awesome as well!

I noticed your first value study in post 9 is pretty dark, with almost no lighter areas. You might want to try including more contrast with both darker and lighter values. The other digital paintings you posted recently seem to be better in this respect.

Anyways, awesome job so far! Draw on!

    Oh, thank you.

I'm sorry, I didn't catch the notification that you had left a comment, so this is my first time reading it.

The imaginitive portrait feels really flat to me, and I even darkened the shadows of her face. I think I need to do a lot more value studies, and try some exercises to actually burn it into my mind.

You're correct that the value study in post 9 is a bit dark. I did draw that a couple of months ago, but I suppose I haven't improved all that much, since I rarely practice.

    Again, thank you for commenting.

    Thank you very much.

I've got a lot of information in my head, but it rarely gets onto the canvas, rarer still, all in one piece.

I like what you posted so far I agree more value studies would be helpful, but lets be honest, we all could use more of those.

I like the portrait from imagination. It's kinda reminds me of the glamour portraits, where all attention goes to lips and eyes, and it seems to be you also focused on those things most (but I may be completely wrong). Which can be good, if you study faces more.

I think that you could use the highlight from her nose and apply it to her cheeks, maybe somewhere around lips and near eyebrow (= to put it simply, add more light, not only more shadows). I also feel like you were slightly uncertain in the area of shadow from her nose bridge (the one that goes from tip of nose to her eyebrow, and the area at the beginning of her nose where you didn't add any light or shadow), because that area is usually more complex, from what I recall. On the other side, you could also add more shading around her eye in side area, people usually don't have this smooth faces there.

Uff, that's all I could think of right now. I hope it was at least slightly useful; I'm a beginner and I'm not the one to talk, haha. But since it was one of the most completed works I thought I'd share my opinion.

Please don't get it in a wrong way, I love your studies and I'm looking forward to your improvement in the future. And I may be completely off with my advice sometimes.

I'm always open to critiques. Even if you were to critique my work in a completely insensitive, rude manner, I'd still take it into consideration.

Thank you for taking the time to critique my piece, I'll try to improve.

I've shifted direction a bit in the past couple years. Now I mostly draw in charcoal. My goal is to get good at drawing, and hope that it translates into digital painting.
