ROUND#309: The Evergreen Giant
ROUND#309: The Evergreen Giant
In the Great White North, within vast coniferous forests dwells a large and mysterious beast. Sightings are very rare but the few that do manage to catch a glimpse of the creature describe it as being very large and bears a close resemblance to a large evergreen pine tree, thus giving it the name 'Evergreen Giant.' Your task this week is to design this mysterious Evergreen Giant!
-It is very big, at least two stories tall
-Resembles evergreen pine trees
-Must be mostly green.

The hardest part in this one is to not make it into a character
@BansheeSix: I agree. The first thing that came to mind was an ent from lotro,
My first try, I´m calling it Branchiosaurus

Looked at some reference of what an evergreen actually looks like
When this dude lies down to sleep...he become a mountain with a forest on it
LOL sthinkypanda I would never have thought of that!

Same as will... My 2nd child is born today! =) So, even if the theme is flattering, I could be not in. We'll see =D
Stinky Panda - Nice work, but there is some sense moviment missing. The fresh picture of the first two attempt get lost a bit with the rendering of the third. If you have time, try to sketch something more now that you know the creature you made, and then do the pose again in a new work. Would be a great exercise and you will have a more undrstood of the brenchiosaurus anatomy and moves. Love the name tho! =D
BansheeSix - Well... I really like concept, even if the creature is maybe a little bit TOO MUCH BIG. I mean, I could not give anay resemlbance with a pine tree, if this monster is big as a mountain full of pinetrees. =) Btw, if you turn that awesome treebrush in pinetreebruches, well maybe could me more credible.
Go slow on my advice. I'm daddy for the 2nd time, first daughter, and Im in Looooooove =D (you can see this by all the typo =) Well, =) Well.. =)
I always pop in here to see if I can think of anything really nice for a creature, but I worry my ideas might not be outside the box enough. I too was immediately thinking Ent.
@ StinkyPanda - Love the idea and the name you gave it to go with!
...I'll need to think of a good idea to run with for this that isn't too bland. I may or may not be back to submit!
thanks blindlynx. I will rethink my creature a bit.
I already have an idea, when i get to my computer I will update
My first C.O.W.. So hey everyone!
Well, this is my take on the mysterious giant (tree). He looks like a nice fella, doesnt he?
Keep up the good work all!

this most evergreen-ish?
i will fix branches and stuff. And i will make his head a bit like the top of a christmas tree and little spiky leaves everwhere
stinkypanda in your little poses sketches I like the one on the left, he looks majestic
Still have a ways to go to get the look i'm going for. Here's a sneak peek.

I'll go with a more "asian" pine. Critique is welcomed!

Passion & Patience
If you've got a minute, a crit would be truly appreciated!
My Sketchbook: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/sho...d.php?t=268823
didnt get much time to work on my tree-giant. but I cleaned him up a bit
Thought I'd jump in on this. I like the idea of the beast being able to fly, so I'm going that route. Obviously this is very rough
some great looking stuff here guys!
PlagueBone: I know it's still early but I'm not really getting the proper vibe from this. The tentacles kinda throw me off, try to work on some quick thumbnails. Get in as many ideas that you can to work with and try to build up from there. The main goal here is to give yourself some variety in your designs then afterwards you can mix and match different elements to come up with something.
JsscSprngr: It's a nice start but Ideally I'd like to see something look a bit less Entish. Mainly because it kinda breaks that humanoid rule. Plus ents have already been done before and we'd like to see something more original.
Lhune: good to see you hop in this again, very nice so far, I'm assuming that this is just a small portion of the whole piece that your showing.
I'm not participating this round, but wow! Lhune! I love your design! And stinkypanda's too! All these entries are looking so awesome.
Spent most of the week pondering over an animal shape that would make sense originating from for this brief. Felt a strike of genius with a large evergreen-antlered deer or some sort... come in here and Lhune has already got it and running with it -.- Well dang haha
I'd feel like a terd doing too similar a concept. Unfortunately my backup plan was a huge squirrel- like beast whos tail was up and bushy like an evergreen, but It just feels ridiculous compared to what's already in here haha Everyone elses ideas are so good!
I'll be back in a couple weeks after I move and see whats brewing in here then. Good luck all!
Here's the real quick work-up of my plan B hahaha
Been really stuck on this one. I was going to go for a bird, but Kraemology seems to have drawn the picture I had in my head too, so I went for a snake. (Forgetting Benergy has done a snake as well, but I think there is enough of a difference between the designs for me to take it forward.)
I am still not happy with my concept, in my effort to avoid doing a Christmas tree with a head I seem to have ended up giving a cobra a leafy overcoat. If anyone has any suggestions on how I can push the design further please let me know!
Benergy: Your creature having feet don't seem right to me, especially with the snake head. If you are going to do feet I would go for some lizard / amphibian shapes to be more in keeping with the head.
JsscSprngr Remember it has to be at least two stories tall as well, the size of the birds in the update make it look quite a bit smaller now.
@ Moirae--I completely empathize with your sentiments of designing a creature under these specific parameters. I think your design has plausibility, but I find myself asking questions (relating to the specifics of the design brief) that still need to be addressed; specifically, I'm wondering how a beast of this size and shape could ever (in this day and age) be a rare sighting. With my design, I simply gave it wings, which when folded would resemble an evergreen pine. This in turn, would account for the fact that sightings of the creature would be rare, because (A) the creature is well camouflaged & (B) the creature is primarily aerial.
So...thinking along those lines, I imagine that perhaps your beast travels underground (like the graboids from "Tremors") or maybe the 2nd half of the beast is underground, while the top half can remain above ground because of it's similarity to an evergreen pine tree...or maybe the sightings are rare because the beast lives on, or near, the coast of the great white north, but spends the majority of it's time in the ocean.
Regardless, it's a challenge to keep the design interesting, yet plausible, but hopefully some of my spit balling helps.
This is where I am at so far, got a monster Christmas tree in effect here, just having fun with it. Comments and crits are welcome.....
Man it's been awhile....Good to see the COW still going strong. Decided to join in.
I'll have an evergreen tie-in for those wondering. For now just designing the structure.
Thanks Kraemology, I think I was too focused on trying to avoid an Ent style tree-man that I have lost sight of the original concept. Now I have a new angle to attack this from I'm diving back into some sketches.@ Moirae--I completely empathize with your sentiments of designing a creature under these specific parameters.
