CHOW#339 :: Queen of the Viking Pageant

    Character of the Week #339
The Queen of the Viking Pageant.

    Deadline - Sunday, November 17th 10PM GMT

Among the viking, the men are the warriors of the clans. The women, however, we never know what they do. Rumor has it, that the women are more into the local "fashion" and trying to compete with each other to see which is more "beautiful" than the other. A pageant was created to elect a Queen, who is the most "beautiful." Your job is to design the queen of the most recent pageant.

This week you must design the queen of the Viking pageant. Use this topic to either be literal with the design, or use anything you know about Vikings to see how else you could interpret a Viking "pageant"

    The Guidelines:
    • Gender is female
    • Must be a Viking
    • Must include a "Crown" on the queen.

    The Rules
    • Finals must be posted in the finals thread before the deadline
    • Final post must include the CHoW number and the artists username at the bottom of the image
    • At least 3/4 of the character must be visible
    • Sketches or rushed artwork will not be accepted into the poll
    • No photograph paint overs, must be 100% original work
    • At least two wips posted with your final in the finals thread
    • NO ENVIRONMENT BACKGROUNDS! You may use simple shapes, gradients or silhouettes
    • Have fun!

Art and vikings, my two favourite things combined! Will do my best to finish it before deadline.

PS: Vikings didn't wear horns on helmets, so don't do that

Indeed the history says that christians wanted to demonize vikings by describing them as horned barbarians.

    PxelS - nice foundation.

See if I'm gonna do this one...inspiration is kinda dead.

Nice topic! Is sculpture OK, or does it have to be 2D?

Well, I can`t speak for the mods BUT I`d actually like to see a 3D take on a ChOW topic.

Horned helmets are known from pre-Viking Scandinavia, but they were probably ceremonial, not something warriors actually wore in battle.

PxelSlayer- thanks! I think I'll go ahead with it, and if it's excluded, oh well.

*EDIT* I read the main submissions page, like I should have in the first place. Sculpture is allowed!

Vikings were fierce in battle, mostly because they were practical in every aspect of their lives. One of the main reasons historians doubt Vikings wore horned helmets is because it would be incredibly impractical. You don't want some wobbly-ass, top-heavy helmet on your head while you're trying to show some Saxon peasants how to correctly behead a Saxon peasant.

I've read that only some powerful chiefs wore horned helmets as a kind of status symbol, and that the normal Vikings wore normal metal caps.

PxelSlayer... wow, and you call that "doodling"? impressive!
Delightful_Piffle, cool sexy pose! however, for the moment the style looks more like arabic to me...
Matija, that's looking great, perspective, pose, armour design...

Here's my sketch, my idea is that the pageant winner gets the "honor" to stand in the cliff, waiting for the ships to return, so that she is the first thing the warriors see when they come back... The pose was intended to be static, but maybe it is way too static, it almost looks egyptian...

I have Pxelslayer envy. Again. Lovin Matija's start too!

Worked on this late last night, but was too tired to post. The more tired I get, the more lazy I am with my "strokes" (aka chicken scratch). There's a drawing in there, I swear! ;D

My vikings determine the queen by which woman is the most badass while still remaining beautiful. Valkyrie inspired. This lady's trumped the other contestants by bringing evidence of her latest kill; the head of a chinese warrior.

I am drawing inspiration from paintings of Sif, a prominent Norse Goddess. I can imagine viking women looking to her as a icon of beauty because she is wife of the great warrior Thor. She has long golden hair that drapes to the ground, and people of the Nordic races are known to be tall and slender. I'm also going to do a bit more research into viking attire. For now, here's an initial sketch.

Two contrasting ideas for mine. I like the idea of a Pageant as a mechanism to distract the families and wives whilst the Viking men are off pilaging and destroying their enemies. I also like the idea of an equal female character, zena warrior princess / valkyrie type whose beauty is shown through her strength, loyalty and honour. I want to research the clothing next then decide which idea to go with.

Hey guys, I made a slight edit to the brief, nothing major, just reworded a sentence a bit. It does not change what any of you have done so far. So keep it up!

Hi ! Great topic ! I did not wanted to come here until I came up with some ideas... just too scared to be inspired by other ideas!
I did some research on the topic, having a whole book about vikings sleeping in my room for too long...
My pageant contest takes place in a village, so I do not want to go for very rich clothes and jewelry... The girls there just do their contest with what they have or can produce by themselves. Also, did not want to go for the "warrior" type, as it was very wrong to go against your gender (calling a guy a gay was the worst you could do, and girls didnt go manly). I also want to add one strong symbol : the crow, animal of wisdom very respected by the vikings.

SO, to begin, just some doodling (colors are not final at all) to mature my ideas in my head. I hope to spend my whole week-end on it...

  28. i guess i´m to immature to draw a bigger girl ... ah well
"Ceremonial use of horned helmets during the Germanic Iron Age persisted until the 7th century and can thus be argued to possibly have overlapped with the early Viking Age"
so i guess a horned helmet could be given to the queen of the pageant, sort of like a tiara nowadays? anyways...

Well, the best way to go about it is imagining what kind of environment would fit your character. Also, looking at other artists work and master studies. However, with ChOW a rule of thumb is to keep it as simple as possible (which is why I`m having doubts about this one, as it seems a bit more "complex" than it should be).
