Psage:[/B] Okay I appreciate your advice and your comment. I do. But I'll have to politely disagree with you for majority of it and explain why. So this IS a race for me because I have to submit a portfolio in a month to be accepted to an arts program. And I am running out of time, which is why I am studying so much at the moment. But whether or not I get accepted afterwards it is still a race for employment. Now I understand what you mean by it's not a race of art. And I still enjoy art and it's process. It's going to be lifelong for me. But because I strive to improve I treat it as a race since I am on the lower end of skill level, and not even professional in my opinion. From that stand point 22 is late ( at least in my view ).
22 is absolutely not too late. There will be jobs when you are 32, 42, 52, 62, 72 and beyond. There will always be new art jobs, if that's what you're looking for.

Keep in mind this is my view... but... your focus should be on your own work and not that of other people. Yeah, you do sort of have to do a little comparison to know where you stand so that you know when you're ready to enter the workforce.

But constantly comparing yourself to other people in terms of the anxiety involved with not being "good enough" is only going to lead to frustration (and not the good kind of frustration). It really isn't a race, because you can't force things... you really have to go through the pains and difficulties of learning the stuff.

It's about getting an overall perspective on skill and drawing.

Also why is my area of focus too broad? Could you please explain so I might understand a bit better? I have been focusing on anatomy after my gestures and since then I still have been focusing on it. But after gestures I practiced on understanding value, and now I am just trying to get an understanding for color. Do you believe it's too quick?
Looking at what you're doing so far, yes, in my opinion. Based on what I'm seeing, you're studying kind of all over the place. Without getting too much into specifics--the beginnings of understanding seems to be there with gesture, and with color, and with proportion and many other areas. But that's just it. It is kind of an early level with most of the stuff. (I assess myself the same way, btw).

You should strive for understanding. I'm seeing a lot of energy from you in your work but it seems to be going in a lot of directions. Focused energy in one direction will get you further. I would suggest trying to get a really good grasp of structure and construction, if you're looking to do concept art. This is a recommendation not just from me; but from many people who work in the field (such as Bobby Chiu, Stephen Silver, and others). It's an important first step, because so many things hang on the overall beginning point of structure (value, gesture, and others). Then color kind of depends on value. Concepts like color and value really depend on solid understanding of earlier principles.

This isn't meant to tear you down at all, it's meant to kind of help with a different perspective on your situation. Think about it ... try it on for size... and see if you don't agree.
    Thinking connects desire with creation.
    How good are you?

Hohohoooooo what a load of CRAP and I know EXACTLY how you feel. 5 years ago a dog runs out into the street of a 3 lane road. A big black SUV with dark tint windows is a good 3+ seconds ahead of me. They didn't stop but the little car in front of that SUV stopped and was apparently the only one to stop for that dog. SUV swerved leaving me blocked in side to side and a parked car in front of me! Saw the dog out of the corner of my eye as the airbag hit me in the face...

I would SO love to take that SUV to court a long with the owner of that dog....

    Any way, I feel ya.

Zou: Thanks! I'm doing better little by little
AHHHHHH ALL YOUR ADVICE. IS NECESSARY. Okay I'll try to suck it all into my brain XP

P Sage: You're correct psage arghhhhh. Yeah comparing myself to people better at art younger, or around my age just demoralizes me.
But it's really difficult not to feel this way for me. Thank you sincerely for the advice, I'll give it a go.
Earlier what people said my biggest problem was with edges, but now it is with form and I can see that and I completely agree. So I'll pay much more attention to it in my practices and learning... I just won't be able to give it my full attention as I must produce 20 pieces of artwork for my portfolio of acceptance in a month ^ ___ ^""""" a really really tight deadline for me haha. So you will see a definite shift in my future posts towards understanding form/ volume, but there will still be some extraneous artwork etc not focused on primarily that. Thanks again!

BillW: Yeah!!! ARGHHH IT GETS MY BLOOD BOILIN'. Ah well, I suppose with time it simmers down.
I'm sorry that happened to you. It always sucks to be in such positions haha
Just serves as a warning I suppose. Now I drive like a slowbug in the furthest righthand lane and go the speed limit haha.
It has actually relieved alot of my stress though ^___^. Thanks for your comment it was really nice

Okay I'll be updating in the morning that way the same evening is fresh for me to draw,
and not upload with... since I draw in the evenings So not too much to show for now

Some sketchpgs, a sketch ( ughh gonna work on feet ) and the start to my still life.
I think I understand how to handle the beginning stages of a drawing a bit more. Finally.
Yeah, what you just block in shapes and etc? And it took me like a month to realize it -sigh-

Ugh. I don't know wht I'm doing. Okay I'm going to go back to mainly traditional and cut out this "dipping into everything" thing I'm doing with digital.
I feel like I'm making little progress and not enjoying anything because I'm trying to do too much right now, trying too hard at the wrong things.
Digital pieces will be primarily studies...
    Stuff.

Assuming the bottom sketch is the new one? It's very much improved over your 1st go.

Billw: Yeah man it's that one Thanks I'll admit it's a tad better, but I don't think drastically improved or anything. And yeah! Haha I'm glad you can tell it's bridgman otherwise it meant that I was horrifyingly bad at copying him XD He's got a unique style that's for sure

Man I wish I could get rid of everything I've said on this 3rd page...major complaining on my part and it's just embarrassing.
This is an art sketchbk afterall. Ugh I'll try to talk less about personal things unrelated to art

    Hi Pou

keep posting and working, you're on the right path !

    crits:

-i see many small heads, try to check your heads or just make them bigger
    - i also see some neck problems (or connection to the rest of body)

i think you should use the oreilly construction method
see how harmony lines connect neck to hips
    it worked good for me
you must use it each time (and always do full construction, until it gets inconscious)

Zou: Thanks for the crits. Man! That oreilly method looks pretty complicated but I realized today that my proportions are really messed up around the neck when I don't reference...so I shall practice it until it's unconscious. Thanks as always

hey pou, dont forget to make studies to the MOST basic things of something, never ignore the easy things!!! NEVER! -on everything, color, value, anatomy, architecture etc...

soon i will upload some color studies where i wrote some thoughts and experiences while painting (do it too, it helps a lot!) it is in german XD- but if you want i can translate it

you can imagine, that everything is build of easy and understandable things which seem to be very difficult and complex if you put it togehter, i mean if you see a face, there are soooo many things: color of the skin/the light in the room, anatomy, it has a strict construction, perspective, value, light shadow, maybe you can see the blood beneath the skin because of strong light,three-dimensionality, expression etc...(some things are maybe the same but i separate them for some reason^^) now if you take all of it apart and study them, it makes sense for you, and with some effort you will understand everything (or maybe just the important things) of it i think that painting isnt only art, it is also science.. so: basics are important! many are skipping this part and later they dont know why theyre art sucks after years! THE END.
