    @BlindLynx: You're right, I didn't like those legs either
@Spellsword95: Thanks man, I decided to go with those horns and with a generally more comic-ish style now:

Made a few adjustments based on comments. Still not sure about the Japanese y elements. Perhaps a nice dragon tattoo or a red stripe down his middle? IDK

I'm done. Still unfinished, but I'm tired of it and won't touch it again. This round is over for me.
Also values and contrasts on my laptop screen are killing me...

    WIP #1 Oni

hey here's my first WIP sketch it's a little rough but i'm real excited. Even though I'll have only a little time left to finish this I could'nt resist this challenge, huge fan of mythological creatures especially japanese. Hopefully I'll be able to transfer all my practice with traditional painting so far to digital.

rinu: Too cute. Get some tiger ref, work some fierceness into the design, give him legs.

This is pretty much it sans details, this guy has been giving me a ton of trouble, but I feel like I've improved and learned some stuff.

I'm gonna have to call this guy done, work is insane at the moment! I managed to do a few of the things I wanted to do since my last post, but not everything (the arm/hand on the left still sucks, and still no colour).

I've never submitted for finals before, am I doin this right?

that was always the intention, i'm planning to make the face more like the mask roughly sketched beside him (not the one in his hand) also I was thinking of a tiger print for his shirt since he will be wearing a black hakama. Either way thank youfor you opinion.

Armando your silhouette is great, and though having his face hidden in shadow does make him intimidating I wonder if it would be better to show the face so we can see that it is an oni, or at least hint at the features, just spit-balling though.

    Great entries, people!
Rinu, I love that style, so, your idea is to keep him without feet?
I'm very late for this one, I don't know if I'll be able to finish it, but there is what I've got so far...
original pencil sketch + corrected version + starting to add some lights and shadows...

Update. His weapon looks way too much like wood, gotta make it more iron-like or change the whole design.

Really grinding at this point. I guess the lighting doesn't make much sense, so I'm just trying to make stuff fit together better in that sense... I envy the people who can generalize and do big brush strokes.. :/ I have a problem with that.

    Any crits appreciated!

Z01ks I find it helps to see things in planes and place colours down like a quilt so you generalize it all into big forms and work your way smaller. Your work looks awesome anyways.

Heres my next WIP please if anyone has any tips or opinions feel free to share.

@BlindLynx Thanks for Your comment :] Although i still haven't solved the perspective problem You were talking about. I guess i'll just keep trying to fix that. And i played a bit with the position of Oni to make it more impending. Still i decided to keep it a bit more neutral. As if we don't know what its reaction to a human would be - curiosity or agression.

@Grotski Hey, thanks :] I changed the position of the horns.

So here's my update. Unfortunatelly didn't have much time to work on it. Still have a lot to fix.Name: Oni wipas rg 2.jpg

An ancient artifact that was found in china resides in the museum of asian history, and a scientist discovers
that this artifact is sending out low levels of gamma radiation. He obsesses over it, and in his research he theorizes that this artifact is a portal to a unknown dimension. He believes that this will open new doors for technology for teleportation. Since he is unable to take the artifact out, one night he sneaks inside the museum with a laser that would shoot into the artifact's gems opening a portal. The scientist doesn't realize what is on the other side, he doesn't realize he opened a portal to a dimension where hideous creatures reside, that the Japanese have called them in the past, Oni.

I'm too inexperienced to finish this to a degree I'd be satisfied with in a reasonable timeframe, but I'd like to at least show everyone sort of what I had in mind.

I did have a kanabo on the ground, but the inky black stuff coming out from him sort of won out. This was inspired by a night terror (yes, I woke up during a night terror, not a nightmare, an actual night terror screaming my lungs inside out into a hallucination) where the room looked like it was swirling in inky black stuff like you see emanating from this Oni. Like, literally, that's what I saw as if it was real and in front of me, coming off all of my furniture. The brain can do some pretty amazing shit, even if it's terrifying at the time. lol.

I was thinking something more along the lines of him having the ability to materialize a kanabo out of the inky black fluid.

I was going for a nice organic body, but since Onis are also demons, I really wanted to add a strong, smothering supernatural feeling to it.

Oi, it looked more blue before I added all the ink in. I'll have to saturate it a bit more to give him pale blue skin.
