    Cool Jai's Sketchbook

Hi everyone, I'm an illustration student at SVA in New York City. I used to have an old SB here, but this is my new one. Although I'm not as into entertainment design as I used to be (and am veering more into editorial illustration) I still feel at home here. The whole concept art community is what got me into art after all, and I value all the inspiration you guys have to offer. My goal by the end of this academic year is still to draw competently from memory. While I have good drawing skills from life, my memory skills still need more work. I'll be posting sketches, studies, and finished work here.

    Thanks for stopping by!

Hey all, I recently finished a book project full of portraits of people on the subway. Here's a mosaic of all of them. Hope you enjoy!

Sorry for the double post, just didn't want to cram it all in one. Here are some figure drawings from the past two or three days! Sorry for the phone-pic quality, I'm currently working on getting a scanner.

Your work has a very rhythmic style to it, the forshortened figure is quite spot on! As for critique i'd say that there to much of a curled repetition of lines giving your characters an aged feel. But thats a matter of taste! Keep it up

PieMonster: Thanks man, good to be back. I really miss this place. Really keeps the motivation high!

Watskeburt: Thanks so much for the critique, I'll definitely keep that in mind as I progress.

Hey all, here's two new portraits. I'm working on getting a scanner, so more drawings are on the way.

You are amazing. I'm loving the sketches especially, but your portraits are so expressive and unique. Gorgeous technique. More more more!

Very interesting work on those portraits, and your lines are so clean and bouncy! Looking forward to seeing your experiments-

reading your first post i personally don't think you should give yourself the objective of beign able to draw "only from memory", i think havng good life drawing skills like in your case is a really great skill to have, it means you are able to see things well, which is very important- and if you have that, i think then its more a case of working on your imagination drawing (the planning of illustrations, the interior vision, composition, design giving yourself a precise objective) and then using your obsevation skills to the get the most of the the reference and the preliminary drawings that will be your roadmap tothe final piece.
I think beign able to draw a flamingo/rhino/tractor from memory with no reference (this is what i understand when i hear "drawing from memory") if asked to is a not very useful skill these days with google and all, but beign able draw what you want when you need it is going to be more beneficial- my 2 cents sorry for writing so much hehe- keep at it!

Couldnīt agree less with TheGnoll. Drawing from imagination is what sets you free.
