    back from the dead

**Tried to chill the thread out some, let me know if it needs more chilling out. I wanted to post all my work from the day in one post but I see that is a bad style. **

Well, I've been lurking on this forum for well over a year now maybe two. Decided its time I get some work up. A little about myself, I'm mostly self taught, at the moment going to art school is a little out of the question (though I should probably jump in a few classes at the community college.) I'm into making 3d/multimedia type stuff, and am trying to get better at 2d art to improve my work overall. My main influences at the moment are probably Loomis and Villpu, just trying to nail down the fundamentals and what not. Hopefully I'll be updating this thread fairly often but we'll see how it goes. Big props to Conceptart.org and all the guys who run the show here, without this place I dont think I'd know anything about making art.

Anyways, here's a big dump of stuff, so you can get an idea of how I work. I tried not to censor myself too much. This is all from the past couple of weeks, done in a little 5.5" X 8.5" sketchbook with mechanical pencil.

If you've got any comments or suggestions let me know what you think.
    -Mike

Got inspired by the OC thread and started messing with it. I haven't messed with color that much so I guess I gotta start getting it wrong sometime..

Yina and ZebzFree thanks for dropping in.

Did some head studies today, started with a couple of trace overs and then tried to apply it without ref. I need to start working bigger.

    Nice work!

Just love to see so many practicing so hard for their crafts... those facial muscles are cool! Just a pointer.... you might want to know what and how those muscles work on the face... this way, you might find it useful in the future when you start drawing the facial expressions.... stretch those muscles man! :batman:

Thanks southerncomfort. Tried a little bit of that today. This book I got "Human Anatomy For Artists" is a little too descriptive and medical, not enough constructual and visual. I wish I had a reference (if one exists) that showed how the muscles actually looked when contracted, instead of just the effects on the skin.

Some studies of the nose and eyes. Decided I should probably get the simple stuff down good before pushing muscles too hard.

And another quick OC sketch, need to do one of these from ref someday.

Beatnik - Thanks man. I'm a keep it up as long as I can. Glad you think I'm going in some good directions.

southerncomfort - Yeah we'll see about the good anatomist in no time thing. I'm glad you think so though.

Took a break from the head studying a bit today, got some pen doodle's and some life drawings. Someone (emily g. maybe) gave out a good critique to someone else yesterday, said to draw things from life and analyze it from different angles. Tried that today with a lighter and some scissors, did a couple of studies and tried to draw them with different angles I made up. Harder than I thought it would be, good exercise though. I need to do this kind of study more often.

Tried working my way around the head today, need to work on my 3/4s and tilted view points, top three skulls are ref from a book. Wishing I had a model skull to study from.

Worked on a portrait of friend of mine for a couple of hours this morning, still could use a lot of tightening up. Didnt really go at this with a good process, just kind of went at it.

    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...y/048-Nate.jpg

Didnt think I was getting back to work on this so soon but a couple hours later and I think Nate's looking much better, got the proportions looking better I think and not sure what else to do with him value wise.

N'other head study, this time tried following fredflickstone's tutorial some. EDIT: I didn't realize that Ron had a tutorial with practically the exact same head! My bad. I was actually following the other head tutorial and trying to apply the steps to this guy.

Thanks arghmisfit, hopefully I can keep my momentum going.

Here's an SP I did last night, still pretty loose but I can't work on it atm as my monitor was the primary light source. wes9000 told me to "really think about the forms that make up the face and features and how you can use your brushstokes to essentially sculpt those forms..". Tried to paint this that way. That approach makes so much more sense.

Thanks a lot dCept. Gotta keep pushing. Here's another update and a new sp I started on. There's not much difference in the first but the details are more refined. Not sure where else to go with it.

This isnt looking very me-ish I think. Having trouble finding the right values to match what I'm seeing.

An update on yesterday's SP, looking better but something still wrong. All these halftones are killing me, might drop it and get some better light set up.

    back from the dead

And something I did from imagination. Did this on an old labtop, it displays darks with a reflected light kind of look it'll take some getting use to.

I'm 22 today. Should be getting my hands on some new anatomy books soon. Here's an update of the SP, I think its getting closer.

And some random cloth that was conveniently draped around. Tried to get a better handle on my pencil strokes.

    facial muscles

There is a great book called Facial Expressions by Faigin, if you're still looking for something about muscles and how they work. I just looked at your thread and see a huge improvement since the beginning--all that hard work shows. I have a lot of the same questions about pencil strokes that you do-- Judy
