    Hi,
This is my first time posting, although i've been a closet reader for some time. The work on here is great, I love checking out these weekly challenges and i've been meaning to get myself involved for ages.
.. so I've finally done it, whoop!
This is my idea so far.

Stil some sketching ahead before any painting.

DvrJeroen - Great color pallet and composition. The mountains direct the eye back toward the city and the perspective is solid. As you refine it could be cool to use a complementary color to highlight certain areas.

Coool Brain - The flow is really great on this and I really like how open the space is on the right. I think sharpening some of the silhouetted areas on the building would contrast well the the softness of the background. The figure is great too.

OverlordGunnar - That a cool concept and the perspective is well executed. To keep the focus on the outside it might help to make the interior a stronger silhouette and wash out a lot of the detail with light coming in from the outside.

ImageScribe- I like the colors you have so far. I would start thinking about what you want to be the focal point of the piece and arrange the landscape in a way that directs your eye toward it.

Artanis - I love how loose and textured it is. It really works well together and I'd love to see the progression.

z01ks- For me, the most interesting part is the top of the island with the structure and cool rock formations. You could almost just crop that as part of a larger landscape against a really cool background. I think the perspective of the outpost seems a little off from the island. Great work though!

I've taken a second pass and refined some areas changed up the area on the bottom right. Next pass will be some atmospheric effects. Would love some critiques!

Hi guys, I have an update.
Kipepeo - Thanks for the comment, pushing the values really helped a lot I have a suggestion that might help you with your image, I think you should get in the habit of flipping your canvas horizontally every so often, It will help you to spot perspective and composition problems more easily. Your image is sloping from bottom left to top right, this often happens because it's the easiest line for a right hander to draw, so we favor it. Flipping the canvas will reverse that, helping you to balance the image.

So, now I have an outpost, but it looks like the robot from portal 2.... mixed with an angry bird.

Coool Brain: i like your speed painting its great!!

Kipepeo: maybe make the guy on the cliff smaller, also check perspective of the cliff seems like its at an extreme angle?

AndyMcd: your buildings got different perspectives, i like the colors and the idea tho

    ashess: hope to see more

    JiaM: I like the story....

nice open topic! looking great guys!

here's a few things I noticed scrolling through the page:

Kipepeo: The red bounce light is way too red. It should have the same color as the ground. I like the angle

ashess: I'm not sure what the horizontal line in the middle is.. I would cut that out, maybe you intended to?

AdrianNagorski: I think the image would benefit greatly from bringing the ship up. Dont crop it! At least not that much. And change the angle on the building a little to make it more dynamic. I like the cliffs, and it has a nice mood.

insane lemur: nice, I think you should add some red or orange to the sky as well to make it look really hot!

good luck everyone! can't wait to see all the final images!

here's what I've come up with so far. Hope I get to finish it tomorrow. feedback most welcome!

EOW Round #214: The Last Outpost

EOW Round #214: The Last Outpost

Lemur, I like how you are getting this dirty look to it by having the lava show color through temperature, and everything else dead and colorless incl. the sky which might be full of dust particles from all the burning orsmth!............. START POSTING ON SIJUN AGAIN EHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH???????????????????? ???????????????????????????????????????? it's getting pretty quiet over there I miss having such an easygoing feed of inspiration

Lakka: Really like your brush work, odd looking outpost but it works,
i think you should have very little focal light in your scene
like a combination of the two that you posted??

Magellan: Thanks for the tip, i really like the creep feel of yours
even tho its so colourful! pretty cool.

    Raedrob: TSUNAMI !!! Looks great.

Insane Lemur: nice! sci-fi? maybe add a space ship flying away?

    near final....

We watched with certain awe and fear as we sailed away from the last outpost, leaving behind those few brave enough to stay,
unafraid of the impending doom, was it cowardly to flee? Still how long before the
enemy reached the coast? My prayers with those that we left behind....

Aigner drops a bomb, blows up the thread!

Its funny, I've done a few pictures which fit perfectly for this theme but as I understand we cant use old work, is that right?
    Good topic though.

tchan247 : very interesting concept keep posting

z01ks : those extra rocks from the sides really adds to the picture and the ships looks good!

monkeybread : wow man looks awesome! great lighting! reminds me the game assassin creed

Magellan : really liked the atmosphere of this fantasy world, great colors!

Benedikt : very fine render great job!

AdrianNagorski : looks good! I also as Magellan think that it would look better if the ship will not be cropped , the seagulls are fantastic!

small update .. I guess there is a lot more value to add and the proportions of the outpost and everything else seems weird , need to fix that

I hate to say this, but for some reason I liked the last WIP you posted better than the final version. The WIP was very minimalistic and abstract in an almost etheral fashion, something I mainly associate with Tom Scholes' work. I feel you've lost a good amount of that epicness in the final piece.
It's still an extremely powerful image of course, I think one of the main contenders for my vote.
