Overlord-abstractly speaking everything is very blocky in your pic. Make your centerpiece outof rounded shapes and you'll at least have a graphic contrast going.

thnks guys for input on the bw's. I thought the lightning one would be awesome but after doing a couple color studies I'm gonna choose #4! i like the idea of having a dark on light value contrast in the sky, when else can you do that?

Thanks for the input Insane Lemur,
I'll try and follow suggestions from you and Ardian Nagorski. I'm thinking a giant cylindrical sci-fi tower with weapon emplacements. I'm going to start sketching up ideas on my now

    Norren's Arc

Hello everyone, today is my first day here at CA. What better ways to get involved than to dive straight into its community challenge?

I always write a little brief for myself during the initial sketching phase, which will guide me as I start to flesh out various details. Here's for this challenge:
All hail this New Age of the Merpeople!

Mercolonies conspired to decay and claim all erable land for their underwater empire. The end was near for humanity.
...Until the Legend of Norren’s Arc reached keen ears.

Norren’s Arc was known to have magical sails that call upon the wind and the waves to guide its voyagers to a safe haven. Tale has it that the Arc is anchored by the centre of the sea, and only reveals itself under moonlight.
Dispite those fleeting chances, and Mermen’s discovery of their plans, banners were raised...

    And the search was on!

Just a very brief, light massing right now. Going to finish the process and start drawing in some juicy story-related details. Very much open for suggestions!

    Hi,
This is my first time posting, although i've been a closet reader for some time. The work on here is great, I love checking out these weekly challenges and i've been meaning to get myself involved for ages.
.. so I've finally done it, whoop!
This is my idea so far.

Stil some sketching ahead before any painting.

DvrJeroen - Great color pallet and composition. The mountains direct the eye back toward the city and the perspective is solid. As you refine it could be cool to use a complementary color to highlight certain areas.

Coool Brain - The flow is really great on this and I really like how open the space is on the right. I think sharpening some of the silhouetted areas on the building would contrast well the the softness of the background. The figure is great too.

OverlordGunnar - That a cool concept and the perspective is well executed. To keep the focus on the outside it might help to make the interior a stronger silhouette and wash out a lot of the detail with light coming in from the outside.

ImageScribe- I like the colors you have so far. I would start thinking about what you want to be the focal point of the piece and arrange the landscape in a way that directs your eye toward it.

Artanis - I love how loose and textured it is. It really works well together and I'd love to see the progression.

z01ks- For me, the most interesting part is the top of the island with the structure and cool rock formations. You could almost just crop that as part of a larger landscape against a really cool background. I think the perspective of the outpost seems a little off from the island. Great work though!

I've taken a second pass and refined some areas changed up the area on the bottom right. Next pass will be some atmospheric effects. Would love some critiques!

Hi guys, I have an update.
Kipepeo - Thanks for the comment, pushing the values really helped a lot I have a suggestion that might help you with your image, I think you should get in the habit of flipping your canvas horizontally every so often, It will help you to spot perspective and composition problems more easily. Your image is sloping from bottom left to top right, this often happens because it's the easiest line for a right hander to draw, so we favor it. Flipping the canvas will reverse that, helping you to balance the image.

So, now I have an outpost, but it looks like the robot from portal 2.... mixed with an angry bird.
