    CHOW #333 :: Cruel Jack

    CHOW #333 :: Cruel Jack

    Character of the Week #333
    Cruel Jack

    Deadline - SUNDAY, August 25th 10PM GMT

There was once a man named Jack who was a nasty fellow. He beat his wife and kids and was an all-around bad chap. Jack got worse and worse as the years rolled by. But finally Jack’s body got so wore out that he died. He went up to heaven, but Saint Peter refused to let such a wretched fellow in. Then he went to Hell, but the Devil barred the door as soon as he saw Jack coming and wouldn’t let him in either. “Go away and don’t come back,” the Devil told Jack.
“How am I supposed to get back in the dark?” Jack grumbled. “Give me a lantern.”
So the Devil threw a chunk of molten fire out to Jack, who took it for his lantern and went back to earth, where he wanders forever through the swamps and marshlands of the earth, a bitter spirit whose only delight was in luring the unwary to their doom with his lamp.

    The Guidelines:
    • Must be male.
    • Must be human.
    • Create his lamp, whether it be something he holds or a part of his body. Make it unique!
    • He is a lost, tormented soul! The design should reflect that!
    • Genre is Horror

    The Rules
    • Finals must be posted in the finals thread before the deadline
    • Final post must include the CHoW number and the artists username at the bottom of the image
    • At least 3/4 of the character must be visible
    • Sketches or rushed artwork will not be accepted into the poll
    • No photograph paint overs, must be 100% original work
    • At least two wips posted with your final in the finals thread
    • Background is optional
    • Have fun!

I'm sad I missed the deadline for the Dragon's Nanny by like an hour :-/ So I put it in my sketchbook. I'll have to try this, I've never drawn anything scary before. I'm a sunshine and happiness type of person. lol

He uses his glowing rib cage to lure his victims into the murky marshes. Spooky.

I would like to humanize him a bit more, so he doesn't seem like a zombie... and design the rib cage lantern more. But this is all I have for now!

    Cheers!

FlyingPenguin - that's an epic idea. perhaps have some iron bars supporting the cavity where his chest was to make it seem more believable, (coz that's really believable )

Ashess - I'm liking the lantern on the back idea, it's like his paying for his cruelty with the burden of carrying the weight for the rest of eternity.

interesting topic, I'm guessing based on the will-o-the-wisp.
here's a quick sketch...he continually needs to absorb the souls of the living to keep his lanturn lit, while no souls are available he inadvertantly absorbs the environment around him...
not planning on completing this but I feel it is a good idea to at least wip up a sketch to finish (maybe never) in the future for these chows...

Art is not about competing against others and being better than everyone else, but it is about competing against yourself and discovering your greatest potential!

Flyingpenguin - cool concept, reminds me of something from a Suda51 game.

Wips from start to current stage. Will have to clean it up and improve the lamp. Plenty of time till sunday, though.

I went for the redneck-y look, cause it seamed probable to me that such a character would sooner or later end up beating his wife. Therefor the outfit, characteristic mustache and lack of hair.
As for the lamp - there is one condition given by the devil in order to keep it burning: it must constantly touch human flesh. Not being too fond of burning his own body, Jack collected bones and intestines of his victims in order to keep his precious rock alive. And because its molten rock and it burns trough almost everything, poor Jack must work really hard and pile up as much flesh as he posibly can.
Comments, critics and posibly tips are welcome
    ded,Rob Powell - sweet!
Best of luck to you all.

NickyBeats: Yea sorry man, rules are, he has to be human. Not an Ent. You might want to start a new one. I left this one open as to let you guys decide how he met his fate, or how mutilated/rotten his body may be. But we gotta be able to tell that is a human.

My rough Draft (Which I *hope* I actually finish on time) -.-
The general idea behind it is: There is little that can turn what might otherwise have been a decent person into a beast more completely than alcohol, and Jack was a MEAN drunk. His lantern is a bottle of (whiskey?) Haven't decided yet...The molten rock is in there, and it is stuck right through his head. It has just enough alcohol in it to drive Jack nuts because he's thirsty damn it. But he just can't get his drink. (It's punishment.) Always open to suggestions if anybody notices anything really off.

This is my first attempt at participating in CHOW or any of the weekly activities, for that matter. If I'm doing anything incorrectly, please let me know.

Anyway, these are some sketches of where it might go. Of course, some of these stop being so human-like - so they might not make the cut.
